Someone get Diane Sawyer a crash course in indirect fire. Discussing this morning the recent flurry of rocket and mortar attacks landing inside the Green Zone in Baghdad, Sawyer supposed that the insurgents had somehow breached the perimeter themselves and fired from inside the US embassy compound!
Sawyer spoke with Jonathan Karl during the opening minutes of todays Good Morning America.
DIANE SAWYER: But lets begin with this breaking news from Iraq, reports that mortars have landed inside the US Embassy compound in Baghdad. ABC national security correspondent Jonathan Karl has been working this story. Jonathan, good morning to you. Whats up?
JONATHAN KARL: Well good morning, Diane. This is the fourth day in a row of attacks inside the Green Zone and this one appears to have landed actually inside the US Embassy compound. Life has been particularly nerve-wracking inside the Green Zone. Yesterday alone there were 16 rocket and mortar attacks that landed inside the Green Zone, and in each case the US military suspects these were special groups, militia groups associated with Moktada al-Sadr, renegade extremist factions of his Mahdi Army. And also Diane they are telling us that the markings on these rockets show they are in fact made in Iran. And they believe they are fired by groups that are supported, trained and funded by the Iranians.
SAWYER: Alright, I want to come back to that in a second, but how much of a surprise is it that they can actually get inside the embassy? How fortified is that?

Sawyer’s shocking ignorance ping to Today show list.
Can someone please wipe the Vaseline off the lens. Every time I see Diane sawyer my eyes start to water.
Blonde?
She’s blond from the old school - she can talk well, but possesses no cognitive ability ...
Am I naïve to be shocked by this? Diane Sawyer, perhaps the most prestigious person within ABC News, the woman who’s traveled the world including Iraq, actually imagined that insurgents had gotten inside the US Embassy compound in the Green Zone and fired their mortars and rockets from there? Call me crazy but I’m stunned.
“militia groups associated with Moktada al-Sadr, renegade extremist factions of his Mahdi Army.”
There are no “renegade extremist factions” among Mookie’s Boyz in Da Hood!
They’re all takin’ orders directly from Iran. And so is Mookie!
SAWYER: Alright, I want to come back to that in a second, but how much of a surprise is it that they can actually get inside the embassy?

Actually, could you put more on? And turn off the lights. Maybe a bag over her head would help.
Oh, and some duct tape over her mouth. Yeah, that should do it.
Maybe she “mis-spoke?” She probably meant “How could the rockets be OUTSIDE the embassy” ... wait, hmmm, that doesn’t compute either does it?
Much ado about nothing. You do realize that Sawyer worked in the Nixon administration, and helped co-write Gerald Ford’s memoirs? She’s at least nominally an (R).
“stunned?” Do you mean “stuned?”
It’s not a question of her political affiliation per se. And while I know that Diane did work for Nixon long ago, I believe she has since become reliably liberal. She’s a huge global-warming alarmist, for example.
I am shocked though by her imagining that insurgents had actually breached the embassy perimeter in the Green Zone and fired their mortars from there. To me it shows glaring unfamiliarity both with indirect fire and the extent of the security that surrounds the embassy.

SAWYER: Ahriiit, ah wanna come back to dat in ah second. By da waaay, just ta let ya know, Ah ain't no rocket scientist neither. Ya mean dey fly frum ah long way away?
