Home gardening offers ways to trim grocery costs [Survival Today, an on going thread]

Home vegetable gardens appear to be booming as a result of the twin movements to eat local and pinch pennies.

At the Southeastern Flower Show in Atlanta this winter, D. Landreth Seed Co. of New Freedom, Pa., sold three to four times more seed packets than last year, says Barb Melera, president. "This is the first time I've ever heard people say, 'I can grow this more cheaply than I can buy it in the supermarket.' That's a 180-degree turn from the norm."

Roger Doiron, a gardener and fresh-food advocate from Scarborough, Maine, said he turned $85 worth of seeds into more than six months of vegetables for his family of five.

A year later, he says, the family still had "several quarts of tomato sauce, bags of mixed vegetables and ice-cube trays of pesto in the freezer; 20 heads of garlic, a five-gallon crock of sauerkraut, more homegrown hot-pepper sauce than one family could comfortably eat in a year and three sorts of squash, which we make into soups, stews and bread."

[snipped]

She compares the current period of market uncertainty with that of the early- to mid-20th century when the concept of victory gardens became popular.

"A lot of companies during the world wars and the Great Depression era encouraged vegetable gardening as a way of addressing layoffs, reduced wages and such," she says. "Some companies, like U.S. Steel, made gardens available at the workplace. Railroads provided easements they'd rent to employees and others for gardening."

At first glance, I thought it was a doctored photo.

Then I remembered Sunshine and knew it might well be real.

Sunshine was on top of everything, and often falling into something, such as a 10’ or more deep water tank, sitting on top of the ground.

We missed her and went hunting, found her in the empty tank and never had a clue as to how she got in it, jumped? maybe, but knowing her she simply took a ‘flying leap’ and in she went.

Or knowing Sunshine, she may have simply walked up the side of the metal tank.

I saw a Big Horned Sheep walk up the side of sheer cliff, that is something to see, the horns were so long they almost touched the ground and still, after stopping my car in the middle of the roadway, standing still so I could admire him, he walked across the road and went straight up the cliff.

As for Sunshine, one day Bill said “if that goat jumps on me again, it is going...”

Two days later, Bill was attacked again. Sunshine would come running out of ‘no where’, leap in the air and come down on Bill.

LOL, not in hate, but I really think she wanted to sit in his lap.

When I was a teenager my parents had a general store, it was in a country town, on large allotment. We adopted two unwanted white baby goats. All the boxes, after we had unpacked the merchandise, were stacked up in the yard until we had a box-mountain for the goats, who spent all day climbing up and down their little mountain. It's no wonder they like to climb, just look at their natural habitat - goats and mountains belong together.

Beautiful photo and the goats are awesome...

Not the beauty of my favorite Nubian breed, and I suspect they are what we call ‘meat’ goats here, large and heavy but not good milkers.

Yes, we also gave our ‘kids’ a play yard with items piled up for them to play on.

One year, I had 15 Nubian kids....

The word spread around the town and soon, Sundays were bringing cars loaded with children to play with the baby goats.

Your goats remind me of those we had on the Texas farm that I was born on...

When I was about 4 years old, one of them was my best friend,
I can remember my mother always yelling at me to get out of that stinking billy goats pen and not to go in again........

Then one day billy was out of the pen and I was with him.

I remember, standing in front of the dresser, with its big tilting mirror and billy and I looking at ourselves in the mirror.

And all hell broke loose.

I do not remember if billy attacked the mirror, before my mother found us, I do remember her screaming.

In my adult years, I tried asking what happened, all I could get out of my mother was a tirade on smelly goats.

Aunt Bess would have been about 13 then and I tried asking her and she went into a tirade of laughter and would never tell me what happened.

So much for “big white billy goats”.

About 35 years ago, in England, they did a study on herds of wild goats, it was interesting.

Told how the herd had a lead Nanny and Billy and how they followed the same paths for years.

The Nanny would make sure that the herd ate from all the plants, each day, to give them a balanced diet.

I am so glad you know how to post photos, they are all beautiful.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is aware that some bassinets in the Simplicity recall announced August 28, 2008 include the Graco logo and “Winnie the Pooh” motif licensed by Disney Consumer Products. Consumers are urged to check their bassinets to ensure they are not using one of the recalled Simplicity models, including those with the Graco logo or “Winnie the Pooh” motif.

The Simplicity bassinets with the Graco logo were sold between 2001 and 2004. The Simplicity bassinets with the “Winnie the Pooh” motif were sold between 2002 and 2008.

CPSC learned that on August 21, 2008, a 6 ½-month-old girl from Shawnee, Kan. was strangled to death when she became entrapped between the bassinet’s metal bars. This is the second strangulation death CPSC has learned of involving the co-sleeper bassinets. On September 29, 2007, a 4-month-old girl from Noel, Mo. became entrapped in the metal bars of the bassinet and died.

The Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible bassinets contain metal bars that are covered by an adjustable fabric flap which is attached by velcro. The fabric is folded down when the bassinet is converted into a bed-side co-sleeping position. If the velcro is not properly re-secured when the flap is adjusted, an infant can slip through the opening and become entrapped in the metal bars and suffocate. This warning does not cover bassinets produced in recent months that have fabric permanently attached over the lower bar.

Due to the serious hazard these bassinets pose to babies, CPSC urges all consumers to share this safety warning with day care centers, consignment stores, family and friends to ensure that no child is placed to sleep in a Simplicity convertible bassinet covered by this warning.

Lucy, that is an amazing photo of the goats, I think I see 10 of them in the one tree.

Calpernia had an article about fainting goats, but tree climbers are something new to me.

It looks like the old ones are in the tree and the yearlings are on the ground.

Are they looking for wolves?

I found the goats to have about the same personality as a Siamese cat, they are so nosy.

Did you see the photos that Fred posted above?

Makes me want a glass of milk.

Thanks for finding the photo and posting it.

A tree full of goats!

I do feel sorry for them, living in such barren surroundings. Would love to bring them home to the farm where we live and let them eat some fresh, juicy sweet grass.

You can save a lot of money on eyeglasses if you get your prescription from your optometrist and buy the glasses online. I can get a pair of single vision glasses for $ 13.00 delivered. It takes one to two weeks for delivery.

You can also get Sarah Palin's rimless eyeglasses for $ 25 to $ 45 online.

Here are the five top online discount eyeglass suppliers. I've used Zenni Optical and EyeBuyDirect and have had good experiences with both.

INFANT KIDNEY STONES - CHINA (02): GANSU, BABY MILK, MELAMINE

Health ministry starts nationwide haul of infant kidney stone cases
Parents of the babies with kidney stones tell the reporter about
their kids’ drinking state at a military hospital in Lanzhou, capital
of northwest China’s Gansu Province, [11 Sep 2008]. So far this year,
Gansu Provincial Health Department has seen 59 kidney stone cases in
infants, and at least one baby died as a result of kidney stones.
Most of them live in rural areas of the province. There were no such
cases in 2006 or 2007.

China’s Health Ministry said here Friday [12 Sep 2008] that it has
launched a nationwide investigation into contaminated Sanlu baby milk
formula. All local health agencies are to report cases of infants
with kidney stones immediately. Testing by Sanlu, found
tripolycyanamide, also known as melamine, in 700 tons of its product.

Health experts said melamine is a chemical raw material. Ingestion
can lead to reproductive damage, or bladder or kidney stones. A
thermosetting plastic, melamine has an appearance similar to milk
powder. It is widely used in manufacturing fabrics, glues, house
wares and flame retardants.

“The substance gives the appearance of a high nitrogen level, which
is an index to measure the protein content in food,” a health expert
told Xinhua. He declined to be named.

Dozens of babies in the Gansu province are reportedly sick. One died
after drinking contaminated formula.

Lu Yuan, a urologist with the No. 1 Hospital of the Chinese People’s
Liberation Army, said kidney stones could bring serious problems to
the baby’s brains, hearts, lungs, kidneys and livers. 2 babies with
kidney stones receive medical treatment at a military hospital in
Lanzhou, capital of northwest China’s Gansu Province, 11 Sep 2008.
Lu’s hospital, based in Lanzhou, capital of the Gansu Province, has
received 14 such infant patients’ 6 have already been cured and 8 are
still being treated.

“Most of the babies looked worn-out and had a fever when they arrived
at the hospital. Some didn’t produce any urine for two to three days
and were in very serious condition,” Lu said.

The Health Ministry has issued a treatment plan on its official
website http://www.moh.gov.cn to help local hospitals deal with
such sick babies. The Health Ministry said those responsible for the
contaminated milk will face “heavy punishment”. It urged the public
to immediately stop consuming the Sanlu milk powder formula and go to
a doctor if they find babies having difficulty in urinating.

If these news reports are using the terminology “kidney stones”
loosely to include primarily urinary crystals and crystals forming in

melamine and cyanuric acid, similar to the occurrence in the recent

Tainted formula sickens 50
Tainted baby formula has sickened at least 50 Chinese infants,
resulting in one death and prompting a nationwide investigation,
according to China’s state-run news agency.

Sanlu Group, a leading dairy producer in China, recalled about 700
tons of its baby milk powder formula after discovering the product
was contaminated with tripolycyanamide, a chemical believed to cause
kidney stones, the Xinhua news agency reported.

Communicated by:
ProMED-mail Rapporteur Mary Marshall

[ProMED-mail’s toxicology moderator Mod.TG had the following
observations on tripolycyanamide and possible kidney stones in
infants: “The majority of this product is produced and used in China.
There are a couple of large plants in China. It is largely used in
the manufacture of plastic and fertilizer and has some application in
the coating of steel and glass for some industrial purposes.
Interestingly, it has almost the same chemical signature as melamine
and reacts with cyanuric acid in a similiar fashion to melamine.
Melamine by itself does not cause too many problems, but in the face
of its biological breakdown or metabolite product cyanuric acid, the
2 together can cause kidney problems. This chemical has the same
combination as with cyanuric acid and results in a detrimental effect
on the kidneys. It is curious as to how/why it got into the baby food
formula.”

In 2007, there were at least 10 reported deaths among dogs and cats
with many more suffering from renal failure related to ingestion of
melamine contaminated pet food imported from China. (see prior
ProMED-mail postings referenced below). In a New York Times article
at that time (see 30 Apr posting) it was stated that “workers [in the
city where the product was made] openly admit that the substance
[melamine] is routinely added to animal feed as a fake protein. For
years, producers of animal feed all over China have secretly
supplemented their feed with the substance, called melamine, a cheap
additive that looks like protein in tests, even though it does not
provide any nutritional benefits, according to melamine scrap traders
and agricultural workers [in Zhangqiu]”.

More information on the why’s and how’s of this contamination would
be greatly appreciated.

Infant Formula Manufactured in China: Health Information Advisory Due
To Reports Of Possible Contamination With Melamine
The FDA issued a Health Information Advisory to consumers and
healthcare professionals regarding milk-based infant formula
manufactured in China. The Chinese manufactured infant formula may
be contaminated with melamine. Melamine artificially increases the
protein profile of milk and can cause kidney diseases.

Currently, no Chinese manufacturers of infant formula have fulfilled
the requirements to sell this product in the United States. FDA
officials are investigating whether or not infant formula
manufactured in China is being sold in specialty markets which serve
the Asian community. Caregivers should not feed infant formula
manufactured in China to infants and should replace any product from
China with an appropriate infant formula manufactured in the United
States. Individuals should contact their health care professional if
they have questions regarding their infant’s health or if they note
changes in their infant’s health status.

The caption for your photo can only be:

“This is what God planned for us.”

What a wonderful photo, priceless.

Horses are amazing animals, and I think they can feel love.

When my daughter the escape artist was about 2 years old, or less, the only apartment that I could find to rent, from a widow lady, who had an old race horse there.

I promised that Debra would stay away from the horse.

And then came the day that she escaped, and could not be found.

I found her at the coral, pulling handful’s of grass and feeding it to the horse.

I swear, her whole arm was in the horses mouth. And the slobber proved it had been.

As I came running and yelling I am sure, she decided to tell me it was a ‘goggy’, her word for dog.

And yes, I said a prayer of thanks, as only an on duty God saved her arm that day, imagine an old horse like that attempting to eat the grass she offered to it and not hurting her.

Thanks for the information on the eyeglasses, I did not have a clue on who to use.

With all the people wanting the Palin style, that would be fun and cheap.

You must see the new photo that Fred posted.

It should be called “This is what God planned”.

Meow is thinking “ I found the source of my milk, just smell”.

Kid is thinking “He smells like my mother’s milk, but he is sure an odd looking goat.”

When I see such as this, my faith in God is renewed, how lovely.

LOL, but someone is fussing, that kid has been down on his knees and more than likely was having vegetables for lunch, as he as he ate his way down the row of them.

And they will do just that.

When I bought my mountain and moved on it, one of the first things that I did, was plant young trees, about 200 of them.

Had to get a backhoe to come in and dig the trenches, on the side of the mountain, it was the shelf or cut away area where the mobile also set, so I planted trees to look at and frame the mountains.

The next morning, as I waited for coffee to make I looked out the window............

A herd of wild donkeys was out there.

The mothers were standing guard, as the babies went right down the rows of trees and ate them.

The photos that you and Fred post, are soul food.

My parents, with 7 kids, had a huge family garden. We grew 15-20 different vegetables, including beans, peas, corn, potatoes, peanuts, onions, radishes, carrots, squash, pumpkin, cabbages, lettuce, tomatoes — and those are just the ones I remember.

Mother “put up” tons of stuff for us to use all winter.

But boy, did I hate weeding that garden!

SALMONELLOSIS SCHWARZENGRUND, HUMAN, DOG FOOD - USA: RECALL -——————

A ProMED-mail post— http://www.promedmail.org

Two isolated cases of a type of bacterium known as _Salmonella_ [enterica_ serotype] Schwarzengrund in humans has caused a Pennsylvania pet food manufacturer to recall a number of dry dog and cat food brands nationwide.

Mars Inc.’s Mars Petcare is recalling cat and dog food made at its Everson, PA facility, according to wire service reports.

While Mars Inc. maintained that no direct connection has been made between illness in either animals or humans and its pet food product, the possibility that 2 humans may have contracted salmonella caused the recall, which began at the beginning of August 2008.

The latest announcement expanded the pet food brands being recalled to include some Pedigree brands, Country Acres, Retriever, Doggy Bag, Members Mark, Natural, Ol’ Roy, Special Kitty, Paws & Claws, Wegman’s, Pet Pride, PMI Nutrition and Red Flannel.

Consumers should look for “17” as the 1st 2 digits of the 2nd line on the Universal Price Code. Pedigree products will have “PAE” on the bottom line. Consumers can also call 1-877-568-4463 for more information.

[The same serotype of _S._ Schwarzengrund and the same manufacturer were involved in another situation in 2007. It is not clear whether the same plant was involved and whether the strains are genetically linked. The relationship between the 2 human cases and the dog food is likewise unclear. - Mod.LL]
