Obama's pastor's words ring uncomfortably true

The scrutiny of Sen. Barack Obama's relationship to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the recently retired pastor of Obama's Chicago church, highlights the complex intersections of religion and race in the United States.

Neither Wright's purportedly inflammatory statements nor the pressure on Obama to repudiate them are anything new. The tangled webs of religion and race are two of the most persistent themes in American history.

If his words are so true, he should tell the families of the 9-11 victims that it was just chickens coming home to roost. He should also tell all the HIV positive people of Europe, Asia and India that they don’t have it because it was engineered to destroy only those of African decent.

There was not a grain of truth in any of the inflammatory comments that hateful moron made. He doesn’t give a damn about black people, no more than Obama does. They have supported and sanctioned the killing of too many innocent black babies in the womb for me to ever believe that. Get your own house in order before you start talking about someone else’s.

Wasn’t this the paper that printed the “Freeway Willie” hoax some years ago? Remember, this guy was a dope dealer who made up a story about distributing cocaine in “the hood” procured directly from the CIA? Only trouble was it was all bravo sierra, and the MercNews ran with it and created a whole controversy that many Blacks still believe. Their retraction of the story made barely a ripple compared to the original lie.

Alongside this historical amnesia, calls for Obama to distance himself from Wright reflect a racial bias as well. The racial double-standard in America requires a member of a minority group to dissociate him- or herself from fellow "troublemakers" in ways not expected of whites.
