Obama's pastor's words ring uncomfortably true
San Jose Mercury News ^ | 03/20/2008 | James B. Bennett

The scrutiny of Sen. Barack Obama's relationship to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the recently retired pastor of Obama's Chicago church, highlights the complex intersections of religion and race in the United States.

Neither Wright's purportedly inflammatory statements nor the pressure on Obama to repudiate them are anything new. The tangled webs of religion and race are two of the most persistent themes in American history.

The story is in the title. This is what we knew all along, that the left tolerates Rev. Wright because they agree with him.

The Left has been encouraging this kind of behavior. Now it may well destroy them.

purportedly inflammatory

media enablers at work. Spitzer's "alleged" whoring, Wright's "purportedly" inflammatory rants.

addendum: the record shows that Spitzer admitted it before it was news; and that Obama called his pastor's words "incendiary."

"Purportedly," indeed.

Yes, it’s true. The left has a selective memory with an emphasis of all that’s bad in our history and practically nothing that’s good. A very warped view in my book. The left is totally bereft of any pretense of objectivity. I suggest that you fellow Freepers read Robert Conquest’s Reflections on a Ravaged Century. You’ll see very clearly that most of the slaughter in the 20th century wasn’t done by the USA. In fact, millions upon millions of lives were saved by those American GIs. Long live their memory. We need to hammer Obama and his spiritual leader for the rest of this campaign. No let up. We’ve plenty to be proud of.

The “San Jose Mercury Spill” sounds like an environmental disaster eclipsing that compact flourescent bulb breaking incident. Call HAZMAT.

The uproar over Wright's preaching is not because he is wrong, but rather the uncomfortable realization he is right.

I think they meant to say he is 'wright'. If he is right, why does Obama pretend to repudiate some of it? Does this guy mean to say Obama is wrong? I'm confused.

“There is [a] class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy, and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs. . . . There is a certain class of race-problem solvers who don’t want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public.”
- Booker T. Washington, 1911 -

I meant to note one egregious bit of rhetoric in the article. Bennett equates the following words of Frederick Douglass to Wright’s fulminations: “I will hold up America to the lightning scorn of moral indignation. In doing this I shall feel myself discharging the duty of a true patriot; for he is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins.”

This quote is in the mood of the loyal opposition. Douglass wanted to goad and prod America into recognition of its moral duty. Wright “writes” America off, and defines it as an evil force to be opposed. This comparison is such a gross disjunction that one wonders how it could be made in good conscience.

Further, we may note that Douglass was referring to the actual practice of slavery in his own time. Wright is invoking history as damnation.

The jeremiad, a sermon calling for repentance to avoid judgment, is named after the Hebrew prophet Jeremiah, an irony critics of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright fail to grasp.

Hogwash!

Jeremiah Wright doesn't prophesy.

Prophets are obliged to speak directly to the people whom they are calling to repentance.*

Chicken-hearted Jeremiah Wright bad-mouths whites from the safety of his pulpit in an all-black Church.

*Jonah was punished for refusing to speak to the people of Nineveh.

JAMES B. BENNETT is an assistant professor of religious studies at Santa Clara University

They could not trust something so high on their agenda as the defense of Barry Hussein Obama and his Uncle Jeremiah to one of the house loons, they had to farm it out to academia. They do not call it the "left coast" for no good reason.
