It seems the more Barack Obama tries to explain the peculiar statement he made Tuesday concerning his white grandmother's "fear of black men who passed by her on the street," the more he's assuring attention regarding the matter.
"The point I was making was not that my grandmother harbors any racial animosity...But she is a typical white person. If she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know . . .inbred...reaction in her that doesn't go away and it comes out in the wrong way."

A majority voted against him....I think both times?
Doesn't that say there was something wrong?
Yes...an aberration. ANd running Gerald Ford, or NIxon resigning too were aberrations that should not have happened. It ushered in that imbecile Carter..
everybody here makes GREAT points but ..why can’t some reporter throw these hard ball questions AT OBAMA? Not one single reporter has the balls to call Obama out on this racist crap?
no perfect pastor and they all get it wrong on some things.
Thats all you see this as a pastor “getting it wrong”? You MUST be joking !
“Isnt Mr. Obama half white?”
Which addresses an even deeper point: WHY is he considered and referred to by the media as “black” or “African-American”?
He is no more black than he is white. He’s just as white as he is black.
So is it merely on the basis of his physical appearance that he’s labeled one rather than the other?
I agree with you that Obama's dealing in messy stereotypes and that he picked precisely the wrong one to mess with.
One, it is true that the Pew Trusts sponsored a 1999 sociology survey that resulted in a political typology of the U.S. electorate (grouped into about a dozen groups) that showed that older women were a distinct typology at ~6% of the population, and that they harbored very anti-black views (based on fears for their own safety). They were also very much against private gun ownership (same reason) and were prime gun-grabbers.
Older women's personal-security motive fits in both debates, but it never gets brought up when race is being discussed, so that these women are dragged in, misleadingly, as data for general white racism toward blacks rather than as group-appropriately fearful for their own safety on many fronts, as is actually the case for older women (and probably across racial boundaries, I might add).
Two, 25,000 dead people per year, murdered mostly by young black men, in the late 80's and early 90's (the annual death toll is down to about 16,000/year now), offer a great, big, fat reason for anyone to be worried, like Jesse Jackson (as he once admitted), about being followed down an alley by young black men. At the height of the murder boom, 91% of all black murder victims (and black victims were half the grand total by themselves) were murdered by YBM; of the non-black half of murder victims, 25% for sure were murdered by YBM, and probably most of the 25% described coyly by police statistics (what do you bet they know better?) as "stranger murders" with "race of assailant unknown" were also murdered by YBM. Meaning that up to three-quarters of all murders committed during the murder-boom years were committed by YBM.
Three, what proportion of the murders of non-blacks by YBM was racially or hate-motivated? Nobody ever seems to ask. If it's as little as 15%, then the 4700 blacks lynched between 1866 and 1962 would seem to have been eclipsed long ago by a hecatomb of non-black "hate crime" victims, in amongst all the economically-motivated workaday murders.
A talking head was retailing that one on talk radio today (rerun from Friday, I'm sure....). Not Rush, although he has encouraged this..... but the two candidates are doing a really good job of spending all that influence-buying merchant dough on mauling each other to death while McCain's fundraising operation looks like a churchmouse panhandling for crumbs.
They deserve each other, and their newspapers, and Rush and Ann Coulter getting into their mess and stirring stuff up. They truly, richly, existentially and karmically deserve it.
An older lady isn’t allow to be afraid of an aggressive male if he’s black? It’s only okay if he’s white?
I cross the street no matter what the color of a strange man.
This is a gender issue. It doesn’t have anything to do with color. It has to do with inbred fear in women of men who can do them harm.
Sorry, just musing.
It wasn’t grandma who said anything in Obama’s original recounting of the incident, it was his grandfather (who was a bit quick to find fault in others) who assumed that the grandmother was particularly bothered by the panhandler because the bum was black.
The only person in the family who clearly has insulted an entire race is Barack.
My friend called me up to say that he is going to have t-shirts made up that have “Typical White Person” emblazoned across the chest and pass them out to his friends. I told him to sell them on the net(he’d make a killing) but to give me one for free since I came up with the idea.
“I love watermelon but it wets my ears,
Singin’ PollyWollyDoodle all the day”...
Can elementary school kids sing that one again?
Can the Children’s libraries return the book “Little Black Sambo” to the shelves?
I think NOT, because RACISM is a sin for white people but it is NOT a sin for BLACK PEOPLE.
Says Cone, Wright’s guru. And Obama, Wright’s protege.
“...then shame on us.”
Don’t blame me. I will never vote for the guy.
Is Obambi’s white half afraid of his black half? Inquiring minds want to know.
Well, half afraid, I suppose.
Too right.
They make it really hard to get a carry permit, too.
