You are probably right about that. Though I saw a pic of the base where that one fell from, and they do actually sit on top of a ‘stump’ that is buried in the ground. That would seem to indicate they were lifted up before they were thrown over.

his church is close to downtown to the northwest of central part. Do we have any info on how far this thing went to the northeast of olympic park and the dome?

I am presuming it went northeast.

FROM MY BLOG ( http://Libertyrocks.us ):

WAS IT A TORNADO?
This storm is still not officially considered a tornado (as of 11:55 pm CST), however there were numerous witnesses in the Healy(sp?) building that reported a loud train sound lasting about one and a half minutes, that report seeing swirling debris outside their windows. One woman interviewed on the phone, and also live - Julia Murphy - on Ch. 11-ALIVE reported seeing large and heavy debris in a circular motion outside her 12th floor window, and she and her neighbors above her both report seeing circular debris “way above the height of our wind0ws”. She stated that her apartment window overlooks Centennial Park. She also stated that she gathered in the lobby of her building afterwards with other residents and many reported seeing the same thing. Windows in that building were blown out as well.

This is pretty consistent with what one would see at night during a tornado - swirling debris. Straight-line winds on the other hand wouldn’t create this type of debris pattern.

There is a greater chance of severe weather tomorrow than there was today.

MOST RECENT UPDATE: (11:59 p.m. CST):
Red Cross is evaluating the situation to see if their services will be needed.

Fewer than 1 dozen people have been transported to ALL hospitals — it is hoped that this means all other injuries are superficial. Only one in critical condition.

The rubble in this pic was a grain elevator.

Your right. Extensive damage near the site of the Battle of Atlanta in East Atlanta. Now the area is I-20 and Moreland Ave. exit.

Actually the damage line is pretty extensive.
Approx. 5 miles down a line just north of I-20, about 1/2 mile wide. Almost directly W > E.

Somewhat short lived but definitely brutal.

Channel 2 showed some images of the Cotton Mill Lofts in Cabbagetown.

One whole corner of the roof of the buidling was ripped off. Basically exposing half of one unit to the open air.

Almost looked like a bomb went off in the place.

Thanks for the update on that. I’ve been mostly listening to the coverage and typing so I haven’t seen most of the video coverage yet.

The amazing thing about that tornado was that the death toll was not in the hundreds. Twenty people died. Regrettable loss, to be sure, but much less than it could have been with that much destruction. The tornado actually changed the course of the city’s growth. Prior to the tornado, the city was growing eastward. The tornado did most of it’s damage in downtown and the eastern part of the city. The city changed the direction of it’s growth from that point forward.
