Pentagon Says High-Value Detainee Muhammad Rahim, Alleged UBL Assistant, Captured
foxnews ^ | March 14, 2008 | Fox

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon says authorities have captured a high-level Al Qaeda figure who helped Usama bin Laden escape from Afghanistan in 2001.

Officials declined to say when or where Mohammad Rahim was captured -- announcing only that he was handed over by the CIA to the Pentagon earlier this week and is being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Defense Department spokesman Bryan Whitman says Rahim is a close associate of bin Laden and has ties to al-Qaida organizations throughout the Middle East.

Whitman says Rahim helped prepare the hideout at Tora Bora, a mountain area used by bin Laden as the U.S. invaded Afghanistan in 2001. Whitman says Rahim assisted Al Qaeda's escape from the area during the U.S. operation to try to catch the al-Qaida leader.

I still prefer the fire ants and honey treatment. THAT look on a dead body would have the muzzies chugging beer with their ham sandwiches and singing Kumbaya.

How long as "UBL" been the style? Are we calling him Usama now

Some have been using that version here on FR ever since his death in late 2001.

B. Hussein Obama wasn't much known back then.

Cut its fingers off until it talks.

I'm shocked that you would suggest something so cruel and inhuman.

Let's see what the religion of peace says about dealing with your enemies:

Sura (5:33) - "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement"

Defense Department Takes Custody of High-Value al Qaeda Operative

By Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, March 14, 2008 - The Defense Department has taken custody of a “high-value” al Qaeda operative, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said today.

Whitman said that Muhammad Rahim is now in custody at the detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Rahim is a high-level member of al Qaeda and a close associate of Osama bin Laden. “Prior to his arrival in Guantanamo, he has been held in CIA custody,” Whitman said.

Rahim is from Afghanistan’s Nangahar province and had close ties to al Qaeda organizations throughout the Middle East. “He is one of (bin Laden’s) most trusted facilitators and procurement specialists,” Whitman said.

Rahim prepared the Tora Bora complex as a hideout for bin Laden, and assisted in al Qaeda’s exodus from the area in late 2001. He joined the terror organization in the mid-1990s, first procuring supplies and later as a courier. He personally carried messages from bin Laden to al Qaeda leaders.

“He had knowledge of or was involved in al Qaeda attacks planned against coalition forces in Afghanistan,” Whitman said. “At the time of his capture, he was providing support to anti-coalition militias, and groups allied with al Qaeda.”

Before 2002, Rahim procured chemicals for an al Qaeda plot targeting U.S. forces in Afghanistan, and he worked with al Qaeda paramilitary commanders to recruit individuals who had access to U.S. military bases.

Rahim will be treated appropriately and humanely, in accordance with policies and procedures for other DoD detainees at Guantanamo, Whitman said. “He will be treated in accordance with U.S. law and international obligations, including the convention against torture, Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions, the Detainee Treatment Act, the Military Commissions Act and applicable DoD directives and instructions governing detainees operations,” he said.

This is the first transfer to Guantanamo since August. The last high-value detainee transferred was in April 2007. Sixteen high-value detainees are under DoD control at Guantanamo. There are 280 detainees at the facility.

“It’s always important to remember that intelligence is one of our most important tools in the war on terror,” Whitman said. “It’s been essential in developing our knowledge of al Qaeda’s structures, operations, finances, logistics, criminal activity, safe routes, safe havens and intentions to conduct further attacks.”

Good point.

I guess the MSM doesnt want to use bin laden’s full name anymore to remind people of his true ethnic background.

Is this a number 3 again? I’m tired of number 3’s. Although, we did get a Number 9 recently...so we got that going for us.

It does always seem to be Number 3, doesn't it? Reminds me of the introduction to The Prisoner:

"Who are you?"
"The new Number 2."
"Who is Number 1?"
"You are Number 6."

Hmmmm.. There seems to have been an upswing in the amount of AQ meetings/homes that have been disrupted via Hellfires or JDAMS as of late.

I'm guessing he spilled the beans.

Number 1’s are just figureheads. Number 2’s are the bodyguards. Number 3’s are important - those are the clowns who have to actually get stuff done. Disrupt them and you have lots of confusion.

What I suspect this means: they've gotten about as much actionable info out of this guy as they can; and so they publicly announce his transfer ... after 6+ months ... to start the cockroaches scurrying from cover to hide someplace new, which makes 'em easier to find and dispose of.

The Psyops value of this is great, too: who's been burned by this guy? Who can they trust?

Really? ;)

I'm pretty certain that I have always advocated torture and other cruel and inhuman techniques when dealing with terrorists. If you have found that I have gone soft somewhere along the line, please let me know so that I might flog myself back into the correct line of thinking.

Thank you!

Anyway you or someone could photoshop the heads from this picture of Pelosi and Reid to “American Gothic” painting? That would be hillarious.

“...“Prior to his arrival in Guantanamo, he has been held in CIA custody,” Whitman said.”

I don’t want to know where the CIA has been holding him, and I don’t want to know what happened to him during the approximately seven months he was under their care either, but I would like to know how long he has been at GITMO.

The article states he is NOW at GITMO. Doesn’t state when he arrived.

If he just arrived at GITMO, then I’d think he has already sung all the songs he’s going to sing, and the notorious GITMO will be a pleasant reward for his cooperation.

Let’s see. As a non-government combatant out of uniform, his “right’ under the law of war would be to a summary execution. This right should be strictly observed.
