DURHAM - A 17-year-old charged with killing a UNC-Chapel Hill student leader and a graduate student at Duke University appeared this morning before a Durham County judge who delivered a call for anti-gang legislation.
Laurence Alvin Lovette appeared stone-faced before District Court Judge Craig Brown, who used the hearing to urge legislators to pass laws to fight gangs.
"We absolutely positively need to have anti-gang legislation passed by the General Assembly," Brown said. "I respectfully and sincerely ask the governor to call a special session of the legislature."
Authorities have not said whether Lovette was a member of a gang. There was speculation early in the investigation that a suspect in a surveillance photo was wearing a cap suggesting gang affiliation.
Lovette was in court to be officially informed of the murder and robbery charges in the shooting of Abhijit Mahato, a doctoral student at Duke. Brown set Lovette's bond at $3 million and appointed the Durham Public Defender's Office to represent him.
From the bench, Brown also chided the media, saying they were focusing on the case because one of the victims was a young, white woman. Black crime victims, he said, don't get nearly as much attention.

another case, has to recuse himself and being investigated from report WRAL
Durham......now there’s a city that’s been much in the public view lately...
The vision is not at all flattering either!
Durham ..... becoming America’s mini Zimbabwe.
Gee...Could it be because the victim was white, that she was chosen victim? White, small, female, weak...easy hate crime victim?
White, female, college student, out late at night alone. Classic crime victim, regardless of her race or the race of the perpetrators.
Interestingly, there hasn’t been word one (that I’ve seen) about whether she was sexually assaulted or not. I don’t think she was, because there’ve been no charges, but I haven’t seen confirmation one way or the other.

Yep. Back in January a 29-year-old male Indian doctoral student at Duke got shot and killed in his Durham apartment during an apparent robbery. The DPD had already arrested one 19-year-old and charged him with that murder; now they’ve charged Lovett (the 17-year-old) with that murder as well.

“Black crime victims, he said, don’t get nearly as much attention.”
....I expect this judge is pandering to the voters to get re-elected a la Nifong...Durham has a huge black population...
What the heck were these two doing out in the first place?
Oh, it gets better. Atwater was scheduled for a court hearing in Wake County (Raleigh) on a probation violation TWO DAYS before Eve Carson was shot. He went to a third-floor courtroom. His file was sent to a FOURTH-floor courtroom. The judge, instead of asking some gofer to go find and fetch the file, simply postponed the hearing until March 31, which let Atwater back out on the street despite having been nailed dead to rights on a probation violation.

Wow. There just aren’t words.
“Black crime victims, he said, don’t get nearly as much attention.
Nope. Not in Durham. Hardly anyone ever heard anything about the black stripper “rape victim”. No sirree. No publicity at all.”
I was thinking exactly the same thing. That was a pretty ignorant thing to say.
Hey Judge, Crystal Gayle Mangum.
Here’s the reference on Atwater’s probation screwup. Lovett (or Lovette, I’ve seen it spelled both ways) was ALSO on probation at the time of the murders of both Mahato and Carson.

Some liberal judge like the one in this story!
Actual the reason for the publicity was the killing of two girls so close together. The girl in Alabama and this one and both were done by blacks.
There was a lot of news, though it did not last long, about the Indian student who was killed.
As far as media bias goes, I’d like to ask the judge why the big networks and major papers never made a big deal over the rape/murders of those college kids in Knoxville, the Wichita victims of 2000, and other similar crimes. Since those incidents are covered up, it surprises me these murders of Eve Carson and Lauren Burk are getting pretty big coverage in the national media.
