Both Lovette and Atwater were on probation for breaking-and-entering and related convictions at the time of Carson's killing. In addition, Atwater was on probation for illegally possessing a handgun.

Oh, it gets better. Atwater was scheduled for a court hearing in Wake County (Raleigh) on a probation violation TWO DAYS before Eve Carson was shot. He went to a third-floor courtroom. His file was sent to a FOURTH-floor courtroom. The judge, instead of asking some gofer to go find and fetch the file, simply postponed the hearing until March 31, which let Atwater back out on the street despite having been nailed dead to rights on a probation violation.

Actual the reason for the publicity was the killing of two girls so close together. The girl in Alabama and this one and both were done by blacks.
