NEW YORK (AP) -- The call girl at the center of the prostitution scandal that prompted Gov. Eliot Spitzer to resign in disgrace has been identified as a 22-year-old aspiring musician who struggled in a broken home as a child.
The New York Times reported that the real name of the woman - identified as "Kristen" in court papers alleging that Spitzer paid thousands of dollars for her services - is Ashley Alexandra Dupre.
Don D. Buchwald, a New York lawyer, confirmed to The Associated Press that he represents Dupre, but he wouldn't comment further.
Law enforcement officials have said Spitzer had a Feb. 13 tryst with Kristen and paid her $4,300, according to court papers. Spitzer said Wednesday that he's resigning.
Dupre briefly spoke to the Times about the Spitzer scandal but didn't offer details on her involvement in it.
"I just don't want to be thought of as a monster," Dupre told the Times. "This has been a very difficult time. It's complicated."
Dupre told the newspaper she had slept very little since the allegations against Spitzer were revealed, and she declined to comment when asked by the Times when she first met him and how many times they had been together.
She told the Times she was worried about paying her rent in a ninth-floor Manhattan apartment since her boyfriend recently left her. She said she was considering moving back in with her family in New Jersey.
A man who answered the phone at her mother's home in New Jersey and identified himself as Dupre's brother told The Associated Press he had no idea why Dupre would agree to be interviewed in the scandal.
"She's just trying to get through this," he said. "We are all trying to be supportive of her."

22 = not a kid. She’s now very much an adult and needs to take responsibity for her own decisions, including trying to live in the most expensive city in the united states with no real job or career. If you can’t afford the rent in Manhattan, don’t live there. I’ve worked in Manhattan for months at a time. There are plenty of young people who don’t have to turn to prostitution to pay rent. They work sometimes 2 jobs, live in the more affordable areas of NYC to be able to make rent and bill, and still go to college or persue their dreams. She choose to became a prostitute because she was looking for the easiest way to make fast money to support her Manhattan lifestyle. She’s 22. She’s an adult now. Stupid decisions and all.

And so the media starts turning the attention on the hooker and away from the arrogant SOB dem.
That's what the wife feels like on the inside after this became public.
However: since it has been going on 10 years;
and
she urged him to stay in office
and
she didn't look crushed or viscious
I wonder whether she has known for a long time, and was putting up with it in exchange for his family's money / social connections.

I agree she made a stupid decision that tears families apart and hurts children.
What I find amusing is this whole image that the Emperor’s Club has conjured up for itself, and obviously Mr. Spitzer - some rich british guy, and who know who else bought into it.
There is no such thing as a “classy” prostitutue, no matter how expensive she is.
Classy, sophisticated women do not turn to prostitution.
But this “Club” is selling a fantasy - a complete farce.
They take nice professional pictures, they create those goofy profiles for the girls, to give these high powered fatcats the idea that there is something different about this particular group.
They also use fantastic marketing with their pricing...so the men must think “Wow!! This is no ordinary hooker - she fetches $2,000 an hour!”....To them - they must think it is similar to buying the best wine - or dining at a fine restaurant.
But here we have the truth of the matter....high school dropout and runaway. Yet another wannabe “singer” in NY.
Former drug abuser. Formerly homeless.
Recently involved with a married father of 2.
Only 4 years older than his oldest daughter - and whose mother is 2 years younger than Spitzer himself.
I’m sure this is not how she was marketed.
I wonder what they left out of the profiles of all those other classy, sophisticated, well-educated girls?
A list of their diseases?
Eliot's only defense could have been to say "I was helping her through a rough time." You know, like Jesus hung around with tax collectors and prostitutes.
Only difference was, Jesus wasn't getting serviced -- they came to Him for repentance and forgiveness.
