Olympics clean-up Chinese style: Inside Beijing's shocking death camp for cats
Daily Mail ^ | 9 March 08 | SIMON PERRY

Thousands of pet cats in Beijing are being abandoned by their owners and sent to die in secretive government pounds as China mounts an aggressive drive to clean up the capital in preparation for the Olympic Games.

Doomed: Terrified cats crammed tightly into cages are hauled off to a meat market in Guangzhou

Hundreds of cats a day are being rounded and crammed into cages so small they cannot even turn around.

Then they are trucked to what animal welfare groups describe as death camps on the edges of the city.

Secretive: The compound at Da Niu Fang which is patrolled by security guards

The cull comes in the wake of a government campaign warning of the diseases cats carry and ordering residents to help clear the streets of them.

I tolerate the presence of one cat in my house. It makes my wife happy, so hey.

And the cat tolerates your presence as well; it finds you amusing. ;)

This is not deplorable. Feral animals carry disease and can cause other problems as well. Before we became so PC, this is how people dealt with a problem of too many animals. It is much better than allowing wild cats to roam all over the city.

Well, if they REALLY LIKE RATS they will have a lot to like real soon. Just in time for the Olympics I would guess.

Does anyone here know anyone who plans to attend these games in China?

“Tastes like chicken!”
No, they taste like rabbit, At one time when you got a rabbit at the meat market they left one foot on it to prove it was not a cat.

They don’t value people’s lives so no shock they would barbarize cats.

“Too many stray cats is not a good thing but to wipe them all out will only help the rat population to explode.”

lol... yep, billions of huge rats just in time for the Olympics. Communists are so stupid it's comical. I am looking forward to the Olympics, not for the competition, but for the controversy. China is so intent on not embarrassing itself, that it is already doing stupid things that virtually guarantee that it will embarrass itself. By the time the Olympics roll around, the scandals should be coming at the rate of two or three daily. It's going to be entertaining making fun of the dumb commies.

When I lived in Taiwan in the mid-sixties, you’d see cats hung from trees all throughout the countryside.

Here's video. http://www.peta.org.uk/feat/feat-china.asp
