Ted Rall Declares Afghan War "Unwinnable"
Yahoo News ^ | Tue Mar 4, 6:47 PM ET | Ted Rall

NEW YORK--Five years after the Republicans got us into war against Iraq, Democrats want to double down on a war that's even more unjustifiable and unwinnable--the one against Afghanistan. By any measure, U.S. troops and their NATO allies are getting their asses kicked in the country that Reagan's CIA station chief for Pakistan called "the graveyard of empires." Afghanistan currently produces a record 93 percent of the world's opium. Suicide bombers are killing more U.S.-aligned troops than ever. Stonings are back. The Taliban and their allies, "defeated" in 2001, control most of the country--and may recapture the capital of Kabul as early as this summer.

Ah yes, six plus years after 9/11 the far lefty loons like Rall feel more comfortable than ever coming out of their holes to denounce any use of force in the wake of the WTC attacks. Of course afterall, we deserved it, right Ted? Can’t wait to read your next piece of brilliant prose based on your view of a place you probably couldn’t find on a map.

While he's wildly off the mark on his strained AQ / 9/11 non-connection theory, his basic premise about Afghanistan is actually sound. Most people don't understand how far from lasting victory Afghanistan is, or how daunting a task remains. Killing off a few hundred Taliban a year isn't going to fix it. Nor is keeping the capital secure while losing the countryside.

Iraq, for all of it's flaws, has materially, politically, and culturally improved since our invasion. It's not the same place as it was when we arrived. In Afghanistan, if we pulled out tomorrow, in two months there'd be no evidence we were ever there. Our problems in Central Asia are being swept under the rug for later.

This guy’s report does not jive with what I hear from guys that are returning from there. Is it possible that this is just the same Kool-Aide the Dems were peddling about Iraq-—pre-Surge?

That’s okay, last year this time Iraq was unwinable. The leftards have to have something to declare.

I think I’ll try to stay optomistic, at least until I know what Cher thinks.

My FRiend, if I’m not mistaken FR is a Ted Rall-free zone, so don’t be surprised if this thread suddenly goes *ZOTTO*.

Ted Rall is to responsible journalism what flesh-eating disease is to a healthy human body.

Ted Rall is the quintessential douchebag, but he isn’t lieing and is factually correct regarding the clusterfark in Afghanistan due to US and NATO decisions over the last 24 months. The Marine Corp. High Command has been pressing for over 18 months to have the Marines take over the entire Afghan mission, the Marines command structure saw this collapse coming, and they were denied by the Bush administration and Pentagon politics.

Michael Yon was sounding the alarm in Afghanistan in October of 2006, the situations he described in 2006 are now 2 opium harvests in the past.

In the 2007 harvest, the Taliban cut a deal with the Iranian military, for over a (at a minimum) two week period, the only vehicles allowed on west bound Northern Iranian highways were Taliban opium smugglers’ truck convoys. This was witnessed by a group of intrepid British/Aussie/Irish travellers travelling against the opium traffic on these highways.

I read Yon’s “Pefect Evil” months ago. He’s right on many levels. Rall is not.
I also see this as something like noblesse oblige. We used Afghanistan as a tool to help wreck the Soviet Union, then left town with them holding the bag and ignored the resulting disaster until it came back to bite us. I think we owe them a chance - that’s one of the reasons I’ve been here for over two years. Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s how I see it.
