Mormon, Catholic doctrines can collide (No coffee, tea in polling place?)
East Valley Tribune ^ | March 1, 2008 | Lawn Griffiths

Religious and cultural traditions collide in odd ways.

• Is it right to tell election poll workers, assigned to Mormon church meeting houses, to not bring coffee, sodas or anything else caffeinated to refresh themselves during their long day tending to voters?

-SNIP-

First, let’s look at the polling place duties and sipping Maxwell House in the meeting house.

Longtime Tempe poll worker Mary Ann Hemmingson has signed up to work the polls for the March 11 election. She’ll spend her 14- or 15-hour day in a church, but no longer one that belongs to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“I never sign up to work at a Mormon church because the board workers there are not allowed to have any caffeine on the premises,” she said. “That means no coffee in the morning and no Diet Coke in the afternoon. ... You don’t want to see what I look like without my daily dose of caffeine. It’s not a pretty picture.”

“The Word of Wisdom” portion of the Doctrine and Covenants, put forth in 1833 by church founder and prophet Joseph Smith, says that “hot drinks are not for the body or belly.” Add to that what H. Burke Peterson, first counselor in the Presiding Bishopric, said in 1975: “We know that cola drinks contain the drug caffeine. We know caffeine is not wholesome nor prudent for the use of our bodies. It is only sound judgment to conclude that cola drinks and any others that contain caffeine or other harmful ingredients should not be used.”

Advising followers to restrict what they take into their bodies is one thing, but applying that mandate to those people who perform a public job inside their buildings in a one-day stint seems to be taking things too Far.

Sorry...I did not know that it was offensive to call a LDS a Mormon (strange that other LDS are not offended by it).

It's just a diversion we cop at times.

It gives us time to think up an answer to some question a Gentile has asked that we have no answer for.

It is not so much of being offended, as is misconception, mislabeling things of the Lord Jesus Christ as being Mormon.

Well; we agree once again!

Ain't NOTHIN' Mormon that belongs to Jesus!

Hmmm, I would think it best to try and respect the church’s beliefs and try to find poll workers willing to abide by these rules. If they can’t find enough, I guess they’d need to talk it over with church leaders.

I don’t think I would want to work there, as I need my coffee. I don’t drink or smoke, but I’ve got to have my caffeine. Besides, coffee has antioxidants :)

I think the polls should be moved to a non-discriminatory site.

I just handled a bunny at the farm store.

Better watch out how you handle those little bunnies.

I found this article that says coffee is indeed slimming:

http://weightloss.suite101.com/article.cfm/coffee_aids_weight_loss

I tend to seek out sources that validate my behavior ;) They say not to add cream or sugar to coffee, but I can’t drink it black.

Hmm that link wouldnt work

But if it did I’m sure it would validate your coffee drinking...

Cream and suger would be necessary, also, to neutralize the carbs..

:)

Where is the prohibition against drinking in the Bible? Even Jesus turned water to wine for a celebration.

Those of us who do not accept your definition of what is salvation of the Lord Jesus Christ are not bound by your grammatical rules...to me, mormon is just a made up name out of a made up book.

I don't accept yours either but that is no reason to dismiss manners!

Manners ease the stress of communal living, and mannerly behavior recognizes the right of others to share communal space.

Attitude like this makes it impossible to have a civil conversation.

Mitt Romney was the keynote speaker at a Chamber of Commerce Breakfast in my city and there was plenty of Joe.

Romney is not a serious adherant of his faith, but he had to pretend to be or risk being labelled as a hypocrite; which is is anyway.

It is not so much of being offended, as is misconception, mislabeling things of the Lord Jesus Christ as being Mormon.
Mormon was a prophet who received the word of God.
So it is not Mormon’s salvation it is the Lord’s Jesus Christ.

John 20:
30 ¶ And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:

John 21:
25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.

None of us have read every record that are recorded of the things of Jesus.

Civility is an important ingredient in a conversation.

When you obtain it let me know!

29. Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."

If you do ANY MORE than this; it's extra.

***

That is your assumption Elsie!

Jesus also taught "The Lord's Prayer" which says.

"Our Father which are in Heaven,

Thy Kingdom come,

"Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

will, work are synonyms.
