Mormon, Catholic doctrines can collide (No coffee, tea in polling place?)
East Valley Tribune ^ | March 1, 2008 | Lawn Griffiths

Religious and cultural traditions collide in odd ways.

• Is it right to tell election poll workers, assigned to Mormon church meeting houses, to not bring coffee, sodas or anything else caffeinated to refresh themselves during their long day tending to voters?

-SNIP-

First, let’s look at the polling place duties and sipping Maxwell House in the meeting house.

Longtime Tempe poll worker Mary Ann Hemmingson has signed up to work the polls for the March 11 election. She’ll spend her 14- or 15-hour day in a church, but no longer one that belongs to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“I never sign up to work at a Mormon church because the board workers there are not allowed to have any caffeine on the premises,” she said. “That means no coffee in the morning and no Diet Coke in the afternoon. ... You don’t want to see what I look like without my daily dose of caffeine. It’s not a pretty picture.”

“The Word of Wisdom” portion of the Doctrine and Covenants, put forth in 1833 by church founder and prophet Joseph Smith, says that “hot drinks are not for the body or belly.” Add to that what H. Burke Peterson, first counselor in the Presiding Bishopric, said in 1975: “We know that cola drinks contain the drug caffeine. We know caffeine is not wholesome nor prudent for the use of our bodies. It is only sound judgment to conclude that cola drinks and any others that contain caffeine or other harmful ingredients should not be used.”

Advising followers to restrict what they take into their bodies is one thing, but applying that mandate to those people who perform a public job inside their buildings in a one-day stint seems to be taking things too Far.

How does a person KNOW that they have done "every thing in their power"?

If you are saying you don't know if you have done all that you are capable of doing on earth for yourself, are you not being dishonest!

of course I have read the Bible you think you are the only one who read it!

Romans 2:21. you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?

A person is entitled to have faith after once he or she done all within ones power. ~ Brigham Young on Faith.
________________________________________________

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Kinda of like...

I did everything I could thing of...I even prayed ????

What’s with the entitlement to faith...

Is it doled out like a government bennie ????

Whats wrong with just having faith to start with...

If you are desparately needing an answer from God you could die before you got started in the asking bit if you “waited”

Faith is not something you “earn”

Now, faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen Hebrews 11:1

But without faith it is immpossible to please Him (God), for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him Hebrews 11:6

You said “it is by grace that we are saved”

But then you added to the scripture...

“after all we can do”

No, salvation is not what you can do...but what Jesus did for you..you cant save yourself..

The BIBLE scripture reads..

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Ephesians 2:8

Gift, Resty, gift...

That means, Jesus did everything needful for your salvation, said “It is finished” and GAVE it to you...

Not of works, lest any man should boast Ephesians 2:9

That’s why there’s nothing you can do to be saved...it’s not your doing...only God’s...

Jesus did it all..

YOU did NOT answer THIS question; which was PROMPTED by YOUR statement:

How does a person KNOW that they have done "every thing in their power"?

Do you have, "It's a fake" on the list, Elsie?

I'd hate to have to LIST all the posts that portray the misuse of "the Lord's priesthood" by LDS FReepers showering down hate on those who dispute the teachings of Joseph Smith. If you don't think several of THEM wouldn't like to see the Danites wreaking justice on "the enemy" in this day and age, you haven't been paying attention.

of course I have read the Bible you think you are the only one who read it!
__________________________________________

Reading the Bible is not like reading a popular novel..

Actually Sky didnt ask you if you had read the BIBLE...

he asked you “Have you not read the entire Book of Romans?”

In Romans we read about what God thought of the faith of Abraham...........

For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness Romans 4:3

Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. Romans 4:4

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm not “all you can do”

But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Romans 4:5

Dont do works, but believe on Him...

Read the Book of Roman...

Not of works, lest any man should boast Ephesians 2:9

A wonderful gift. Gift - free - unearned. If salvation depended on goodness, I, along with all others, would be weighed in the balance and found wanting.

The only good person who ever lived was crucified for me, He paid the price for me and his name was not Joseph Smith.

Let go back to the topic of this Thread!

I thought that we were playing nice, now.

There have been many other tangents...

Why don't you want to answer how a non-mormon obtains salvation and how a non-mormon is able to receive the antonement of Jesus Christ?

To unleash multi topics defeat understanding and only causes confusion.

But since the last thread, with varying responses from our friends that make up the Mormon contingent, I am still confused on the topic of how a non-mormon obtains salvation and how a non-mormon recieves the atonement of Jesus Christ.

What does a non-mormon have to do?

And...What happens to a non-mormon that rejects Jesus Christ and His atonement?

A person is entitled to have faith after once he or she done all within ones power. ~ Brigham Young on Faith.

That is your specific answer to the question of how a non-mormon obtains salvation and receives the atonement of Jesus Christ?

What, EXACTLY, is a non-mormon supposed to do within his/her power?

So...Mormon salvation is a salvation of works, restornu?

And...which exact works do we need to perform to obtain salvation and recieve the atonement?

Does this salvation by works not contradict the clear teaching from Ephesians 2:8,9?

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: NOT OF WORKS, lest any man should boast.” –Ephesians 2:8,9

Is this verse incorrect, restornu?
