That Air France pic is a fake. The other two aren’t, though—that last one looks like the old Hong Kong Kai Tak runway 13 approach.

Eastern parked a 727 about 800 feet short of the threshold of 22L at Kennedy for that very same reason.

I’ll bet the passengers were really looking forward to that 2nd attempt — that would be really scary.

Also, the grass has little things like VASI lights sticking out of it.

At Little Rock the Captain was the Ace of the Base, and senior AA captain at O’Hare. The copilot was a brand new hire.
The old guy was going to show the kid how real pilots did it, and the kid was too scared to push the throttles forward.
RIP

“Thankfully, they were not near the ground at the time, but he said that he was flying along, and suddenly the plane just dropped about 600 feet.”
Try that in a glider. You will immediately understand the full meaning of the word “helpless”!
But I’m still here!

I had two kids in college at the same time. I was not getting to fly much due to work. Hangar rent and insurance seemed to be a cost I could get by without. Airplane owners should not own calculators.
She was purely for fun, too slow for practical transportation but a lot of fun. I miss her everytime I rent a spam can.

But you can see the VASI. Those drains and water valleys and such are real sneaky.

Yeah - I could buy a Cherokee for what I spent on my kid’s education this year - and he is the first one in college, two more to go.
Ah, well. Choices. Dad duty.

He was too far upwind. He realized that. Then he turned left to regain the centerline
Watch it again. He was a little up wind but not bad. He 'turned left' to straight up right at touch down which is what you have to do. It was bad luck that a HUGE gust hit them right then. See how far that plane goes to the side? That gust was way more than the steady wind was. I have seen footage of crosswind landings in much higher wind than that. Heck I had ridden in the right seat while my dad set down in much worse winds than that. He had his right wing a little high at touch-down but other than that I thought his setup looks ok. Not superb but workable if not for that big gust. The tower is more at fault. They are the ones that look at surface winds and gusting and give clearance to land.

Maybe he shouldve, but thats an awful lot of pressure to buck, especially when everybody else has been getting into Hamburg on that runway just fine before him.
AND he came right back around and landed on the second pass. This was a bad gust. Yeah he was little off but not by that much.

Pilot should have diverted to an alternate port or found a runway in to the wind. That was well outside the cross-wind component for landing.

After about six months of flying the amphib, be destroyed it in a wheels down water landing. He and his passenger were uninjured and swam to shore. The planes heaviest damage came during the recovery of the upside down plane by some nut with a barge and a crane who lifted the plane full of water straight up. Pile of parts.
Ouch! Too bad. Looks like it was a fun bird.

That was some serious crabbing by the pilot and a warning to all about global warming.

I’ve looked at it a lot on Fox. I just watched it again. He doesn’t look as far upwind on the video here (first time I saw this one).
I stick with my original assessment that it is pilot induced right wing too high that starts the whole sequence. Tower is not to blame.

Airlines have an operations spec which should cover stuff like this; certainly for instrument approaches, airlines may not attempt the approach is wx is below minimums (part 91 GA can have at it, though). I can't imagine Xwind limitations wouldn't be set forth in the op spec, but they do differ from carrier to carrier.
Southwest, for example, allowed pilots to calculate runway requirements for landing with spoilers. One snowy night in chicago, a boy died because of this unique and ill-advised rule.
