NYT: MCCAIN'S BIRTHPLACE IN CANAL ZONE RAISES ELIGIBILITY QUESTIONS...
I just looked it up because of curiosity in knowing that the current King of Thailand was born in the USA. Because his parents were here and were part of the royal family, they did not fall under the jurisdiction of the US government, thus, the King of Thailand is not a USA citizen even though he was born here.
Someone should mention to the NYT that the King of Thailand could run for USA presidency. If they can get one thing wrong without bothering to check, I would imagine they would gladly run a story about a foriegn monarch being eligible to run for US President. Plus, there is the whole other thing about residing for a certain amount of time in the USA to be eligible to be President.
You are absolutely correct. Also, the children of foreign diplomats born in the US are not US citizens.
If you parents are citizens of the US, it doesn’t matter where you are born.
My son was born overseas on a US Military Base. When we applied for his birth certificate and citizenship paperwork, we asked this very question. They explained to us that he has dual citizenship, could be anything he wanted to be, do anything he wanted to do as an American Citzien EXCEPT be POTUS. The Military Base did NOT qualify as American soil.
Just curious.
Where were you born?
You don’t speak like a natural born American.
Not only that, he was born on a U.S. military base, in the Panama Canal Zone, a territory ruled by the United States of America, because his father was active duty military serving his country, America.
There isn't a more "American" birthplace than that.
Not quite. The Canal Zone was established "in perpetuity" by the 1903 Hay-Bunau Varilla Treaty and ceased to exist in 1979 as a result of the Carter-Torrijos Treaty of 1977.
Wish that were true, then the Republicans can pick someone else from their convention.
Tell your son to start raising money now for his Presidential race.
When you have a legal question, check what the law says and not the opinions of Gubbmint clerks chewing gum and shuffling papers.

Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the Constitution: No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President

I wouldn’t dare tell my son that he can run for POTUS. He’s a little too left for my tastes. Granted, he’s much more conservative than McQueeg, but still too liberal.
You may have been told that but it is almost certainly incorrect.
US Citizenship and Immigration Services: Naturalization Eligibility
...the United States recognizes the U.S. citizenship of individuals according to two fundamental principles: jus soli, or right of birthplace, and jus sanguinis, or right of blood....
Certain individuals born outside of the United States are born citizens because of their parents, according to the principle of jus sanguinis (which holds that the country of citizenship of a child is the same as that of his / her parents). The U.S. Congress is responsible for enacting laws that determine how citizenship is conveyed by a U.S. citizen parent or parents according to the principle of jus sanguinis. These laws are contained in the Immigration and Nationality Act.
Information on who is a citizen or national at birth can be found in the following sections of the INA: § 301, § 302, § 303, § 304, § 305, § 306, § 307, § 308, and § 309.
Your teacher was wrong.
But seriously, folks, this is BS.
The New York Times is proving, in case anyone yet had any doubts, that they are complete hacks, who are willing to say or do anything to monkeywrench the Republican's electoral machinery.
oh my god they are desparate!
His dad was an admiral in us navy and they were stationed there. and at that time panama canal was us terrotory anyways they are losing thier minds
I believe his Dad, the Navy Admiral, was stationed in the Canal Zone when John was born. End of discussion.
