Ark. Catholics asked to stop donations to (Susan G.) Komen foundation

A breast cancer foundation known for its fundraising races across the globe faces increased scrutiny from Roman Catholic church dioceses for its support of Planned Parenthood.

The church's Little Rock diocese has urged its members not to donate to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation, which has invested about $1 billion in cancer outreach and research. The reason, church leaders say, comes from the Dallas-based foundation giving money to Planned Parenthood to hold breast exams and offer education to women in its clinics.

"Donors cannot control how an organization designates its funds," the diocese statement reads. "Therefore, money donated for a specific service ... directly frees up funds to support other areas of an organization's agenda."

Marianne Linane, director of the diocese's "respect life" office, said those other agendas include abortions and contraceptive services. The Catholic church's policy is that abortion is wrong in every instance.

Linane said the Little Rock diocese, which oversees all churches in Arkansas, used the same statement sent out by the church's St. Louis diocese last year. However, the end of the Little Rock letter included addresses of Arkansas hospitals parishioners could donate to that would eliminate "the administrative funds for a middle broker."

Monsignor J. Gaston Hebert sent the statement to parishes and Catholic schools this month and planned to send out a follow-up letter, Linane said. Hebert did not return a call for comment Tuesday.

The Little Rock diocese's decision comes as northwest Arkansas prepares for its running of the Race for the Cure on April 19. Officials estimated Little Rock's running last year brought out more than 43,000 participants and raised more than $1.65 million.

Little Rock follows other dioceses in raising concerns with the foundation.

In 2005, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston abandoned its support of the foundation.

Breast Cancer Foe Gives Big $$ to Top Abortion Provider

http://www.cnsnews.com/SpecialReports/archive/200502/SPE20050222a.html

A foundation that uses events such as the “Race for the Cure” to raise money to fight breast cancer is jeopardizing women’s health by using some of those funds to support local chapters of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, according to a former advisor to the foundation.

Planned Parenthood clinics provide breast cancer screening and education, but the organization is also the nation’s top abortion provider.

“You can’t affirm life with one hand and support an organization that kills people with the other,” said Eve Sanchez Silver, a medical research analyst and two-time breast cancer survivor who severed her ties with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation after learning that its chapters supplied $475,000 in grants to local Planned Parenthood affiliates in 2003.

Silver and many others in the medical and scientific community believe that abortion makes a woman more vulnerable to developing breast cancer.

According to its website, the Komen Foundation works “through a network of U.S. and international affiliates and events like the Komen Race for the Cure ... to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by funding research grants and supporting education, screening and treatment projects in communities around the world.”

The foundation’s most recent annual report indicates that, for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2003, Komen and its more than 100 affiliates received over $154 million through private donations, corporate contributions and a number of fund-raising events.

The most successful money-maker for the organization in that 12-month period was the Race for the Cure, the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world. The events drew more than one million participants who raised nearly $88 million from donors. The 2004 race in Washington, D.C., held in June, drew more than 52,000 runners/walkers. The Komen Foundation expects 1.4 million participants in its series of more than 100 races in 2005.

While holding administrative and fund-raising expenses to about 25 percent of its budget, the foundation spent about 75 percent of its funds in the 2003 fiscal year on mission-related activities, including grants and programs related to breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment.

That year, Komen affiliates awarded $38.4 million to support community outreach programs, including 21 grants to local Planned Parenthood chapters totaling more than $475,000.

Silver told the Cybercast News Service that she doesn’t believe the foundation should be involved with Planned Parenthood, since that organization “is in the business of abortions.

“If they stopped doing abortions tomorrow, they’d go broke the next day,” Silver said. “As far as I’m concerned, anything they do in the way of drawing women in for any kind of service would simply be to acclimate them to their organization until they’re ready to have an abortion.”

The fact that Komen is awarding grants to the nation’s top abortion provider “proves to me that the foundation’s perspective is not for the safety of women. It can’t be,” she said.

“Everywhere, women who are working to combat breast cancer are begging for money, but they give funds to Planned Parenthood instead,” Silver added. “And that organization is using it to make beautiful centers so they can lure women in to kill their babies.”

Planned Parenthood isn’t as low cost as they’d like you to believe. I was charged $150 for a gyno exam by PP but at my county hospital $20. They make a lot of money off government money from birth control pills and patches too. I wonder if Avon Foundation supports them. I tend to stay away from supporting many cancer foundations because the money doesn’t go towards alternative/complementary healing treatments. I do know Avon does support adult stem cell research for sure.

I’d like more info on this. IF the money to Planned Parenthood id to fund breast exams or pamphlets about breast cancer, I would not condemn that activity, meaning the distribution of info about breast cancer.

I would. As it would make more PP money generated from other, less selective, sources available for murdering infants and destroying the lives of the murdered infants' mothers.

Wish I didn’t visit this thread. It’s actually raising new irritation at how the core issues don’t seem to be addressed. The nurse practionier that saw me was very nice but still... I kinda cringed when I saw teenagers signing up for the depo shot. FWIW, the PP I went to only performed first trimester abortions and there used to be protestors in front but they’ve disappeared (probably gone to heaven now as they were mostly elderly men go figure).

Money is fungible. A dollar given to Planned Deadbabyhood "to fund breast exams" means they can put another dollar toward 2nd trimester abortions.

“How does killing babies benefit breast cancer research??”

Having an abortion increases the chances of contracting breast cancer. Keeps the market for breast cancer research going.

Good enough reason for me!

AFAIK, their money is completely interchangeable. You have a choice between contributing to Organization A, which screens women for breast cancer and kills babies, or Organization B, which screens women for breast cancer and does NOT kill babies. Pretty obvious.

And you're exactly right: both abortion and oral contraceptives increase risks for breast cancer by disrupting the normal hormone levels. Anyone who wants the details on how that works can CLICK HERE.

That’s right! I give to Samaritan’s Purse, 700 Club and other good Christian groups who get the money where they need to go. I also give to Salvation Army and the Rescue Mission around the holidays. You can’t trust secular groups.

I was so glad to hear that Monsignor Hebert has done this. We here in Arkansas are without an Archbishop (Monsignor is head of the archdiocese in the meantime). We (Catholics) in AR might not be great in number, but we are still a force to be reckoned with :)

Yes, 700 Club. They do more than any other group in the United States. They provide blankets to the homeless in big cities (I’ve seen that myself in NYC.).They send huge trucks full of supplies, food, blankets, etc. whenever there is a big disaster like Katrina. They fly into other countries and do operations on their planes to help people with facial disfigurations and other disabilities. Whenever there is a disaster like earthquakes, etc., they’re there helping. They go into third world countries and build homes, dig wells, provide sewing machines and other needed items so people can make a living. It’s called Operation Blessing. Check it out some time. They’re great.

I hope that’s all true. I like the 700 Club but I definitely am suspicious. I am suspicious of all charities and that may be unfair.

It is true. They do a lot for people in crisis. So does Franklin Graham of Samaritan’s Purse. They spread the gospel all across the world with their Shoebox ministry at Christmas, filled with little gifts for children who will never get a gift otherwise. Check www.cbn.com and Operation Blessing. M

Arkansas Ping!

A lot of workplaces take part in Race for the Cure, including mine. I'm not a Catholic, but I'm glad they put this information out.

The 700 Club routinely tells its listeners that Catholics are not Christians.

Yet most Catholics continue to vote Democrat, the party that refuses to cease it’s support of abortion.
