Imam From Va. Mosque Now Thought to Have Aided Al-Qaeda
The Washington Post ^ | Feb 27, 2008 | Susan Schmidt

Even before the 2001 terrorist attacks, American-born imam Anwar al-Aulaqi drew the attention of federal authorities because of his possible connections to al-Qaeda. Their interest grew after 9/11, when it turned out that three of the hijackers had spent time at his mosques in California and Falls Church, but he was allowed to leave the country in 2002.

New information later surfaced about his contacts with extremists while in the United States. Now, U.S. officials are saying for the first time that they believe that Aulaqi worked with al-Qaeda networks in the Persian Gulf after leaving Northern Virginia. In mid-2006, Aulaqi was detained in Yemen at the request of the United States. To the dismay of U.S. authorities, Aulaqi was released in December.

"There is good reason to believe Anwar Aulaqi has been involved in very serious terrorist activities since leaving the United States, including plotting attacks against America and our allies," said a U.S. counterterrorism official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

U.S. authorities were limited in how far they could push Yemen to hold Aulaqi, officials said, because they have no pending legal case against him. The officials said ongoing intelligence-gathering efforts here and abroad prevented them from providing details about Aulaqi's suspected activities.

Aulaqi, 36, was the spiritual leader in 2001 and 2002 of the Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Falls Church, one of the largest in the country. In a taped interview posted this New Year's Eve on a British Web site, Aulaqi said that while in prison in Yemen, he had undergone multiple interrogations by the FBI that included questions about his dealings with the Sept. 11 hijackers.

It’s way past time to officially label Islam a hostile political movement.

And since this is all just a criminal issue, instead of the “WAR on terror” as our leaders keep calling it, nothing will be done about the other imams still in this country unless something is legally proven against them.

And we should be surprised by this.... why?

All mosques are, IMO, are military outposts.

Hey, this has nothing to do with religion, just ask CAIR. It's all these people, who misunderstand Islam to go out an murder people. It's just a misunderstanding.

Of course, very view Muslims ever object to terrorism in their name, unlike their objections to cartoons or piggy banks to women not walking around in tents. Mosques in Iraq get blown up, silence from the World of Islam.

Allow me to tell you something that the CIA or FBI won’t tell you. When you find a Saudi-financed Mosque....which is being run by a Saudi-trained Imam...you have two of the most significant factors necessary in creating a pro Al-Qaeda environment. It doesn’t matter if we are talking of Virginia or London or Frankfurt. The ingredients are the same.

Go talk to the Turks who moved into Germany in the 1960s. They will tell you that there weren’t a single Imam or Mosque in the vast number of German cities they came to work in. They worked and didn’t ever think about Islam. At some point in th 1980s...the Saudis showed up in various cities of German and built the Mosques. Internal pressure was put on the Turks, the Algerians, and the various other Middle Eastern folks....to attend services and be part of the “community”. Germany readily accepted Saudi trained Imam’s...and still do today. The older Turks will tell you that this turning point....shifted the Islamic society in Germany...turning the youth into negative believers in democracy or life.

If you wanted to have an effect....just halt the Saudi-trained Imams. Don’t let them into the country. Don’t allow them to become part of the local mosques. Require training in non-Saudi states. When a Imam triggers a problem....toss them out.

He said he would like to travel outside Yemen but would not do so "until the U.S. drops whatever unknown charges it has against me."

As far as I am concerned, he has been dealt with. Let him enjoy life in sophisticated, prosperous, metropolitan Yemen. Those who despise Western culture should not be allowed to live in the West. They should be forced to remain in their beloved Islamic culture. This a** hole is in the hell hole he deserves. Pepsi-on-ice, you have it right. Don't let them in. And don't allow them to establish mosques that are nothing more than staging areas for attacking our country. I hold my breath and cross myself every time I drive by that evil place in Falls Church.
