WASHINGTON - Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia was hospitalized Tuesday after complaining of back pain following a fall at his home, his spokesman said.
Byrd, 90, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee and the longest-serving senator in history, was staying overnight at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for observation, said spokesman Jesse Jacobs. It was not immediately clear whether he had suffered broken bones.
Jacobs said Byrd fell at his Virginia home Monday night. He came to his office Tuesday and was on the Senate floor to vote for an Indian health bill. But after noticing he was wincing in pain, Byrd's staff recommended that he see the Capitol physician, who "smartly for a 90-year-old man advised him to go to Walter Reed for observation."
Byrd, who as Senate president pro tempore is third in line to the presidency, walks haltingly with two canes. Due to his frail condition, some Senate Democrats reportedly explored ways to replace him as Appropriations chairman, but he continues to hold the post.
I somewhat agree with you. My problem with him has to do with his nonservice during World War II. Disgraceful.
Now that’s funny. I wonder if Barrack Hussein will visit him in the hospital.
I’m sorry Norm...but old KKBird has done more harm than good to this Republic...why should we be compelled to be “decent” to those who seek to destroy the very heart of the things FReepers hold most dear?
Caligula appointed his horse to the Roman Senate and it seems like that’s not a bad idea to me -—I mean four-legs have got to be more stable than two when it comes to standing and avoiding falls.
This man should not be allowed to stay in the company of military heroesat Walter Reed.
I hope he’s okay. Would love to see him retire.
And fell on his k(l)an?
“And fell on his k(l)an?”
*rimshot*
DUH! You are, of course, correct! I know that as he is the gov of my state. LOL! That’s what happens when you stop by and quickly post. Warner had just been mentioned and my thoughts were on VA when I posted incorrectly. Apologies.
Absolutely. Any former KKK member deserves our highest respect.
Question: Who appointed you to the Respect Police?
I really think that 90 is way too old to be making decisions in the Seante. Our Sen-Baucus has been there for 36 years!!! WAY too long. Listening to Byrd speak makes me queasy he is in charge of decisions that affect our lives. I think term limits are in order for jobs like that. Byrd has been out of it for a long time. JI wish him well but hope he retires NOW!
This reminded me (unfortunately) that our AZ Governor, Janet Napolitano, will get to appoint John McCain’s replacement if he wins the Presidency - she’ll pick a lesbian friend, you watch!
The Democrats' Lott Want to purge racists? How about Robert Byrd?
"Senator Byrd quit the Klan in the 1940s and has renounced it since. On the other hand, his history is worth revisiting, since it's something Democrats have been willing to tolerate, despite Lott-like remarks that would have ended a Republican's career. Only last year Mr. Byrd told Fox News that "there are white niggers. I've seen a lot of white niggers in my time, if you want to use that word. But we all--we all--we just need to work together to make our country a better country and I--I'd just as soon quit talking about it so much."
Mr. Byrd quickly apologized, but he wasn't denounced by Democrats, much less by the Clintons. Nor did the press corps use the opportunity to wallow in other Byrd racial lowlights, such as the 14 hours and 13 minutes he spent in an unsuccessful filibuster during the debate over the 1964 civil rights act, which he voted against along with 20 other Senate Democrats. The political press also didn't dredge up his votes against both Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas, votes that made him the only Senator to have opposed the only two black Supreme Court nominees in U.S. history."
"At the time of his "white nigger" remarks last year, no national papers bothered to mention two letters that the Senator had distanced himself from, Clinton-style, by saying he didn't recall writing them, though he also didn't dispute them. The New York Times reported in 1971 on a letter Mr. Byrd wrote in 1946, after leaving the Klan. Writing to the Klan's Imperial Wizard, Mr. Byrd identified himself as a former Kleagle and recommended a person to serve as state Klan coordinator. He wrote, "The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia. . . . It is necessary that the order be promoted immediately and in every state in the Union. Will you please inform me as to the possibilities of rebuilding the Klan realm of W. Va?"
Maybe he’ll retire now. These old dem farts seem to hang around until they croak, while the ‘pubs with critical seats can’t seem to get out the door fast enough.
Not to diminish in any way those who did serve in uniform, but Byrd worked as a welder in a shipyard. We needed those, too.
Oh no apology necessary FRiend, the fact is both Virginia *and* West-by-God-Virginia have ‘Rat Governors, lol
I LOVE term limits!
Excluding terrorists, I wouldn't wish death on anyone.

I did. I'm the Under Secretary to the Admin Moderator.
Fixed.
