Bush's Kosovo policy, like Chamberlain's Munich policy, could lead to war

History has been a harsh critic of Neville Chamberlain's decision in 1938 to allow Adolf Hitler to trash the WWI Versailles peace treaty to seize control of and change the borders Europe, first France in the Rhineland, then Czechoslovakia and Poland. President George W. Bush's quick acceptance of the efforts of the Albanians in Kosovo to change the borders of Serbia will also be viewed in history as an appeasement that did not work.

World War II actually began when Adolf Hitler marched a mere 14,500 troops into the Rhineland on March 7, 1936, in violation of the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I and the Locarno Treaty which was signed in 1925 that included the "Rhineland Pact" between Germany, France, Belgium, Britain and Italy. The Rhineland Pact's main provision was an agreement among Germany, France and Belgium end border raids, with Britain and Italy agreeing to guarantee the borders in the event of aggression by any of the other states. ... Kosovo is for Serbia a land somewhat similar to what Pennsylvania is to Americans. Kosovo is the cradle of Serbian liberty and the center of their Serbian culture. There are hundreds of structures, churches, monuments, monasteries, that attest to that history. What has happened in Kosovo, with America's help, would be similar to a large group of Islamic fundamentalists, whose hero and mentor is Osama Bin Laden, moving into Pennsylvania over the next 50 years, as Albanians did in Kosovo in the 20th Century, and then voting to become an Independent State with membership in the United Nations, as they burned down the Christian churches, Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell while driving out and seizing the property of the remaining Christians, Jews and non-Churched homeowners.

You are the one serving Satan by your irrational hatred against a great Christian nation, denying that they even belong to Christianity for which they have suffered for over a thousand years, defending Europe against the Muslim invasions. Your time would be better spent reading some real history instead of watching CNN.

this has nothing to do with the old cold war and the get those commies, we have moved on and are now fighting another enemy who wears no uniform and they are binladens cronies

The Kosovo-Albanians have played us like a Stradivarius.

First we put ourselves hundreds of billions of dollars into debt to the Chinese and pour God knows how much American blood onto the sands of Iraq and Afghanistan to keep Al-Qai'da out and now spend more American taxpayer dollars to build a bridgehead for them right into the heart of Eastern Europe.

Please!!! Someone tell me where's the logic.

very well put

its the same logic like

we fight them there so we don’t have to here yet the borders are open for everyone to come into this country

we fight them there, we give blood, we are supposed to be stopping the spread of radical islam yet we defend them so they can spread radical islam

yes the mind boggles

No, giving Kosovo back to the Serbians is the best way to cause more war.

Will you cheer when President Chelsea Clinton allows Mexico to annex the American Southwest to create Greater Azatlan without firing a shot?

Even when Kosovo was under Serbian control, there was too much violence, bloodshed, and general instability. After the fallout of the Yugoslav Wars, the first obvious lesson learned was that the Serbs were incapable of governing a diverse country, with the only pragmatic solution being that eventually Kosovo would have to be split from the rest of Serbia, under the protection of NATO.

I view Kosovo independence as a tentative win for world-wide democracy and freedom. I think more people should be excited at the positive changes that could stem from this, but success really depends on how people choose to react to this on both an individual and national level. I find it amazing that the same groups of people are still fighting over the past some 800 years later; in America this mentality by and large doesn't exist, we learn to move on and bring positive change after conflict. One of the most detrimental aspects of human nature is the natural resistance against forgiveness, reconciliation, and moving on.

I know all of history backwards and forwards, in a detail and to a depth you cannot begin to fathom. And there is nothing Christian about the present behavior of Serbia, as I have seen it for fifteen years straight. Nobody requires their psychopathic violence to protect anything from anyone, and nobody here is falling for their slogans and their waves flags. They are bloody murderers, and no excuse can justify what they have been doing for a third of my life. They can stop it tomorrow and behave like civilized men. When they do I will welcome it. They can start by doing exactly and I mean exactly what the EU asks of them, in all their relations with those around them, for an entire generation.

Jason does seem very angry at the serbs or he is just trying to rile members up .

He's a deep-cover jihadi, a patriot of the butt-up-in-the-air-head-bowed-toward-Mecca-five-times-a-day variety.

Do you think we are building Christian states in Iraq or Afghanistan? No.

Do you think we are slaughtering the populace of Iraq or Afghanistan? No.

We are freeing the people of Iraq and Afghanistan, to run their own affairs, moderately govern themselves, ally with the west, be part of the modern world, keep their religion as they like it - all on condition that they work with us to murder the terrorist bastards in their midst, pretending to speak for them.

We do not accept that the terrorists speak for the whole Islamic world. It is the bedrock of our policy. As a fact, most of the Islamic world votes against them every chance they are given, and does not want to be bossed around by antediluvian goons. That is sort of why the goons have spent the last six years blowing other Muslims to pieces with car bombs, and trying to intimidate them by sawing some in half every night.

The US and EU are perfectly capable of, and willing to, live with the Islamic world, and we decline Putin's engraved invitation to fight them all to the death. We see right through him. We know he stoked this entire conflict to distract the west at the end of the cold war, buying time to rebuild a Russian empire, and deliberately arming the worst of the crazies to ensure the conflict is protracted and difficult.

We know those were not and are not acts of an ally with us against heinous Islam, but of an implacable and utterly immoral enemy, for whom religious affilations are mere flags and levers to manipulate masses of other men into conflict with each other. Which, guess what, is all they are to the terrorists, too. What a surprise.

If you want to engage in a war of genocide against all Muslims everywhere, you have to go through us first. It isn't happening. Only Russia and China want it. No sale.

Serbia is incapable of controlling Kosovo. In the last few years, they've had a prime minister assassinated, a bunch of goons from the "Radical Party" elected to parliament, and rampant alcoholism. Nobody has any confidence in Serbia. They need to get their act together before they become a failed state entirely.

NATO has the resources and standing to get the job done in Kosovo. I trust NATO much more than Serbia.

"I think more people should be excited at the positive changes that could [my emphasis] stem from this..."

Clearly, you're unaware of what a failure "nation building" usually is.

God save us from the neo-cons. They continue to cling to the fantasy they held when they were young leftists: If our intentions are really, really good and we try really, really hard, we can't possibly fail!!!

Very good analysis.
Also, Chamberlain was buying time for the RAF and other military to gain strength. The Generals and Admirals told him they must have one more year and any cost. Chamberlain sacrificed his reputation and career to give Great Britain that year.
Churchill made sure that Chamberlain continued to receive security briefings after Churchill came to power because he knew.

Traitor? My goodness! Oh well, here’s a catchy little tune that Jason and TGJ will doubtless remember, or if not, that they might want to adopt it to go along with the ideology they espouse! :)
