TOA BAJA, Puerto Rico - Republican Party members in Puerto Rico awarded all 20 delegates at stake Sunday to Arizona Sen. John McCain, who has vowed to help resolve Washington's complicated relationship with the U.S. Caribbean territory.

The delegates each will cast one vote at the Republican National Convention in September, joined by three local members of the Republican National Committee who also have pledged to back McCain as party delegates.

McCain swept all 38 GOP delegates awarded in U.S. territories over the weekend, moving him closer to Republican nomination for president. He also picked up endorsements from two unpledged delegates, giving him a total of 998. His rival, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee trails with 254 delegates.

It will take 1,191 delegates to secure the Republican nomination.

This is a total fraud.

Certain self-appointed “members” of the PR Republican Party convened a meeting over the heads of the duly established island GOP leadership and declared themselves as the new PR GOP leadership and their delegates. A complaint was raised withe the RNC and they did nothing.

Heck, I could gather a couple of hundred cronies tomorrow, elect ourselves to the leadership of the island GOP and it would have the same effect: nothing.

McCain should reject these delegates. The RNC convention should not count these impostors for anything.

Our problem is that we do not get to vote in the general election because we are not a state, so the primaries would have been our only chance to have a say in the process. Hence, our indignation.

Cheers,

cll

Whoa! A schism in the Puerto Rico GOP?

What surprises me is that the National Committee has done nothing. Is there a chance the delegates will not be recognized at the time of the convention?

While I know that many have questioned the validity of the convocation to the party reorganization meeting of a few months back, the list of McCain delegates elected yesterday would likely be the same regardless of how the reorganization meeting had been held. And given that one of the GOP officers elected in the “coup” was John Regis, who is McCain’s Puerto Rico Chairman and was also his Puerto Rico Chairman in 2000, I don’t think John McCain will refuse to accept the delegates elected on Sunday.

In a letter to Luis Fortuno, Puerto Rico's nonvoting congressional delegate and a superdelegate, McCain pledged to support a process that would enable Puerto Ricans to decide if they want to remain a commonwealth, become a state or an independent nation.

That's nice, but it's not very imaginative. There have been at least three referenda in my lifetime that framed the question in exactly those terms, and in every one a plurality of the vote opted to maintain the status quo. So, basically, McCain bravely pledged to do nothing. It's a safe position.

Correction: two, not three. 1993 and 1998. After frequent referenda in the early 20th century, they went quiet for a while.

The difference here is that (i) the referendum would be federally sanctioned, so the status definitions would need to be acceptable to Congress, and (ii) voters would first decide whether or not they wanted to keep the status quo, and if a majority votes to change the status quo, then there would be a second vote where they would choose between statehood and sovereignty (with sovereignty being either full independence or “free association/associated republic” status).
