Ever since Super Tuesday a super debate has been raging on FR concerning John McCain. I was never a McCain supporter, in fact I penned the post Super Tuesday post "Official FR Drinking Thread" so we could together drown our common disappointments into oblivion.
FReepers seem to be moving into three distinct groups. The first are those that have always supported McCain, a lot or partially. There are those that don't like McCain but are willing to support him because they believe they will get some of what they want or to defeat what the see as the more critical danger, Obama or Clinton. The there's the third group, those that viscerally dislike McCain and vow never to vote for him for any reason.
The actions and motivation for support from the first two groups seem obvious...they would rather see McCain in the White House than a dem. But for the life of me I cannot understand some of the actions of the third.
Allow me to explain.
I understand you dislike McCain and the reasons why. He is far too liberal on many issues, he has stabbed conservatives in the back several times and he is too cozy with the dems. These are all defensible reasons to not vote for him or to vote third party and you have every right to vote as you see fit and for whatever reasons you hold. What I don't understand is why some here are making such concerted efforts to dissuade others from voting for or supporting him.
As flawed as McCain is there is no way a logical case can be made that we would be better off under Obama or Hillary (O&H). Even on most issues where McCain is closer to the left than to us, O&H are much farther to the left than he is and would do much more damage than McCain. On the issues where he is not, the WOT, taxes, abortion, etc., the differences are stark and this does not even take into count extended issues like judicial appointments.
So why are you working so hard, so viscerlly, so nasty, to turn votes against McCain? If you truly feel as you do than go sit out November or cast your vote for your 3rd party candidate. That makes sense. What doesn't make sense is why you push for a McCain and GOP loss.
It may be as simple as "misery loves company". It may be that you validate your own position by getting others to believe as you do. It may be that there are some dem propaganda plants on FR. I don't know but I sure would like to and I know others do as well.
Israel, on the other hand...
“So why are you working so hard, so viscerlly, so nasty, to turn votes against McCain?”
This question isn’t directed to me since I am not telling anybody how to vote for President this year.
Perhaps the answer to your question lies in finding out why McCain has been “working so hard, so viscerlly, so nasty,” against Conservatives for the past decade.
Good one. That'll certainly put me in my place. LOL!
I'm getting the impression that you are correct (as if that surprises me). Those that don't intend to vote for McCain have been pretty detailed in their posts. This is just another 'get with the program and vote McCain' vanity thread, thinly disquised as a sincere inquiry.
You beat me to it, DarthVader; I made pretty much the same points before seeing your post.
The early primaries favored moderate candidates-quite deliberately I believe. In any case you have your candidate McCain-God help you! Macainiacs have posted over and over again that conservatives don’t matter in this election cycle...we will see. Personally, I think McCain will lose big-possibly in the Mondale sense of the word. McCain is a terrible candidate. Heckling and insulting people can not change this fact.
Don’t read, don’t think, don't try to rationally respond to legitimate questions about your candidate. No, just hysterically fire off your next overly emotional slogan, and bile, filled rant!
You people are the Democrats most effective campaigners
wll thank you...I thought so too!
The problem with McCain are the McCattle who say “But he’s a republican” no matter how far left he goes.
***It may be that there are some dem propaganda plants on FR. I don’t know but I sure would like to and I know others do as well.***
You are SO right.
“What doesn’t make sense is why you push for a McCain and GOP loss.”
A McCain loss and a GOP loss are two different things.
In the long run, they are probably the opposite of one another.
“Has Hillary or Obama? What makes you think youll get a better deal with them?”
I’m not voting for Obama but he has at least said he would make the illegals get in the back of the line. McCain says he’ll think about it.
Not a logical conclusion. It is quite likely people are bypassing the primaries because they see no differences in the candidates, or no candidate they are excited about. However, that does not mean they will sit out the general election. The Dem candidate is going to be bad news for the nation, and they may see McCain as a far less destructive course.
I don't know what I'm going to do yet.
Vote McCain. Every vote is needed and it’s all about the Supreme Court judges that will be appointed in the next 4-8 years.
SECURITY!!!!!! as well
Do you think McCain will stop Iran? His Dem buddies would be against that. There will be more talk and sanction-nothing else.
That’s how McCain thinks, too.
This is really a very easy question. First McCain has no chance of winning. Look at the numbers of voters for Obama in the primaries, then look at McCain’s numbers. Then subtract all the crossover voters for McCain in New Hampshire and Florida. He can’t win, no way, no how. There will be no anti-Hillary vote if Obama wins, and even then, the Democrats are unified against any Republican candidate.
The McCain loss being a given, we have no motivation to support him and capitulate on everything that is important to us. Just look at that speech that McCain gave on energy, yesterday. He is making no effort to appease the conservative base, none at all. What makes you think he would do so after the election, if he won.?
