Colorado School Accommodates 8-Year-old Transgender Student

Here's an example of how schools should be treating diversity in their schools. Perhaps this kind of example can help prevent incidents like the murder that happened in Oxnard, California.

CNN interviews Kim Pearson of Trans Youth Family Advocates about an eight-year-old transgender-identified child who is returning to a school in Douglas County, Colorado that has adjusted its facilities and teaching environment to accommodate her.

According to CNN, two unisex bathrooms have been provided for the student, teachers will call the student by her name, parents and teachers will get info on transgender people, and officials will be made available for questions.

The school released this statement: "We continue to be focused on providing a positive learning environment for this student and all students in the class and school that is free from harassment. As with many other students, this particular student brings a diverse set of circumstances to the school setting."

I think you and I agree, and we're just arguing technicalities. :-)

The cases you mentioned are so rare that I don't think we should change policy for them. We should continue to base sex on a person's visible anatomy. At most, maybe we should add a third, dual category for people born with both visible male and female body parts.

Once I watched an interview on a talk show with a person born with both working sets of male and female. She identified as female, but she was obviously both. One of her parents was a doctor who refused surgery for her as a baby and taught her to accept herself as she was. Now there's someone who could fit into a dual category.

But most of the people undergoing sex change surgery today were born either male or female. They just believe they are supposed to be the opposite sex.

If we were to travel further down the road of ambiguity, we'd open the can of worms even more. You mentioned XY in females and XX in males. What about women who create a high amount of testosterone, while some men create very little. They might argue that they're intersexed. Or what about the differences in "male" and "female" brains. A woman might argue that she's really male because tests have shown her brain is male, or vice versa. And there's so much more that science is bound to discover.

You forgot the barf alert to the link.

Poor babies having to use reclassified unisex bathrooms and they might have to actually walk some distance to get to them, just like unisex kids.

No, they want specially built ones, even though they’ll look and function exactly like any other.

What a steaming pile....

not only is the kid now got a mnetal ilness but the parents of this kid seems to have mental issues too.

I have 3 kids and they certainly know who they are because of how they were raised unfortunatly some bad parents think that they should not direct kids to be a man or a woman and say well let the boy play with dolls, let the boy wear make up and wear dresses.

this kid is heading for trouble and social services should be stepping in to take this kid away from the parents
