MILWAUKEE - Barack Obama said Friday that the country must do "whatever it takes" to eradicate gun violence following a campus shooting in his home state, but he believes in an individual's right to bear arms.

Obama said he spoke to Northern Illinois University's president Friday morning by phone and offered whatever help his Senate office could provide in the investigation and improving campus security. The Democratic presidential candidate spoke about the Illinois shooting to reporters while campaigning in neighboring Wisconsin.

The senator, a former constitutional law instructor, said some scholars argue the Second Amendment to the Constitution guarantees gun ownerships only to militias, but he believes it grants individual gun rights.

--He said he would support federal legislation based on a California law that would facilitate immediate tracing of bullets used in a crime. He said even though the California law was passed over the strong objection of the National Rifle Association, he thinks it's the type of law that gun owners and crime victims can get behind.----

--wonder what good he thinks that would have done?

The MILITIA is the body of all able-bodied citizens.

"I think there is an individual right to bear arms, but it's subject to commonsense regulation"

Yeah, that's wording is right there in the amendment, as I recall.

Once again, the Left gets it wrong. Gun rights are not “granted” by the Constitution, rather protected by it.

Right-O(bamba): Wisconsin is a bigtime hunting state and that includes Demonrats. Still, this comes across as vapid at another Demonrat presidential candidate’s foray there: John Kerry.

"I think there is an individual right to bear arms, but it's subject to commonsense regulation" like background checks....

And if your background doesn't include being a high-ranking member of our national Socialist party, then its off to a re-education camp for you.

Also, it depends on what he defines as “commonsense regulation.” He may define it as limiting the calibre available to the general public.

Both Obama and Hillary have expressed support for a national gun registry and a Federal license requirement for owning a handgun. Funny notion of supporing individual gun rights.

This is going to help him. Hard to believe but there are a lot of Democrats, yes even liberals, who are firmly on the side of RKBA.

A surprising stance for him to take, for sure. Wonder what his communist supporters will think about this?

OK, Hussein, so what if the Texas legislature passes a law, signed by the governor, making all Texans over the age of 16 members of the state militia, and makes the M16 standard issue equipment that a militia member must bring to his or her monthly muster? Are you prepared, you babbling Leftist idiot (but I repeat myself) for 12 million or so new full-autos to be in the hands of the populace?

You have to read farther down the page...

"I think there is an individual right to bear arms, but it's subject to commonsense regulation" like background checks, he said during a news conference.

"Common sense regulation" is what the Brady bunch has been howling for all these years--and they'd disarm the citizenry, one and all.

Obama was a former constitutional law instructor, and he doesn't know that the "well regulated" in the 2nd is referring to a well trained, smooth operating, miltia unit and not gun regulation and restrictions. AS though there were background checks in the 1780s. God help us!.

The MILITIA is the body of all able-bodied citizens.

True, but by that line of reasoning a little old lady in a wheelchair is excluded from militia membership and thus can also be denied the right to the means to protect herself from someone bigger and stronger and meaner.

You certainly don't mean that, do you?

Barack Obama said Friday that the country must do "whatever it takes" to eradicate gun violence

Obama's solutions during his Senate run.

35. Do you support legislation to ban the manufacture, sale and possession of

a. handguns?

While a complete ban on handguns is not politically practicable, I believe reasonable restrictions on the sale and possession of handguns are necessary to protect the public safety. In the Illinois Senate last year, I supported a package of bills to limit individual Illinoisans to purchasing one handgun a month; require all promoters and sellers at firearms shows to carry a state license; allow civil liability for death or injuries caused by handguns; and require FOID applicants to apply in person. I would support similar efforts at the federal level, including retaining the Brady Law.

b. assault weapons?

Yes.

c. ammunition for handguns and assault weapons?

I would support banning the sale of ammunition for assault weapons and limiting the sale of ammunition for handguns.

re: his antigun nut supporters: He will point them to this web site that says he is really antigun.

Barack Obama on Gun Control
Democratic Jr Senator (IL)

Ban semi-automatics, and more possession restrictions
Principles that Obama supports on gun issues:
Ban the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic weapons.
Increase state restrictions on the purchase and possession of firearms.
Require manufacturers to provide child-safety locks with firearms.
Source: 1998 IL State Legislative National Political Awareness Test Jul 2, 1998

Voted NO on prohibiting lawsuits against gun manufacturers.
A bill to prohibit civil liability actions from being brought or continued against manufacturers, distributors, dealers, or importers of firearms or ammunition for damages, injunctive or other relief resulting from the misuse of their products by others. Voting YES would:
Exempt lawsuits brought against individuals who knowingly transfer a firearm that will be used to commit a violent or drug-trafficking crime
Exempt lawsuits against actions that result in death, physical injury or property damage due solely to a product defect
Call for the dismissal of all qualified civil liability actions pending on the date of enactment by the court in which the action was brought
Prohibit the manufacture, import, sale or delivery of armor piercing ammunition, and sets a minimum prison term of 15 years for violations
Require all licensed importers, manufacturers and dealers who engage in the transfer of handguns to provide secure gun storage or safety devices

Absolutely not. But the point of the militia in the BOR was simply to emphasize that INDIVIDUAL CITIZENS make up the militia and their right to keep and bear arms SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.

Not really. Gun rights are enumerated in the Constitution.
