Lincoln Chafee Endorses B. Hussein Obama
Associated Press | 2/14/08

Posted on 02/14/2008 7:50:08 AM PST by SoFloFreeper

Former Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee is endorsing Democratic Sen. Barack Obama. The Rhode Islander told The Associated Press he is endorsing Obama in a conference call Thursday. Chafee left the Republican Party last year and became an independent. He was one of the Senate's most liberal Republicans before he lost his seat in 2006 to Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse.

That RI thing was a disaster and unfortunately we paid the price for another stupid RNC decision.

Buisness as usual for the Fredheads here on FreeRepublic. They sure as hell remember the RNC pushing for Chafee, but their swiss cheese memory causes amnesia regarding Fred's actions in that election.

RNC & NRSC openly endorsed, campaigned for, and pushed for Linc Chafee in the 2006 primary = proof the RNC is run by RINO sellouts and cannot be trusted with our $$$

Fred Thompson openly endorsed, campaigned for, and pushed for Linc Chafee in the 2006 primary = so what?

No wonder Fred lost when you look at the hypocrisy of his supporters.

Every time Fred does something that they consider "treasonous" when other politicians do it, they give him a pass.

I guarantee you that if Mike Huckabee had travelled to Arkansas to pimp for Chafee in the 2006 primary, there would be at least five threads from the Huckabee haters to "remind" us of that fact and "prove" what an evil RINO sellout Huckabee was for siding with Chafee.

But Fred does it? Shhh. Let's plug our ears and pretend it never happened.

I predicted they'd give Fred a pass when he endorsed McCain in the primary, and I was right on that one too.

In politics, it’s usually an issue of who sucks less and minimizing exposure to their faults. Of course, these are not universal principles.

I was a FredHead, but I had no idea until just now that Fred Thompson indeed campaigned for Lincoln Chafee against Steve Laffey in the 2006 GOP primary. I found this 2007 article on the subject: http://www.cbn.com/CBNnews/134774.aspx

Suffice it to say, I am deeply disappointed in Senator Thompson’s actions in the 2006 RI Senate primary, and the fact that Senator Thompson was a friend and colleague with Lincoln’s late father, Senator John Chafee (who was liberal, but at least was honorable, unlike his son), is no excuse for his actions. I still believe what I wrote two years ago, that not only should all Republicans have supported Chafee’s primary opponent, but we should have rooted for Chafee to switch to the Democrats back in 2005:

http://auh2orepublican.blogspot.com/2005/08/what-to-do-about-insufferable-senator.html

http://auh2orepublican.blogspot.com/2005/09/more-on-why-senator-lincoln-chafee-has.html

That being said, Fred Thompson did not campaign for Chafee with my money, which is what the NRSC was doing (since I had contributed to the NRSC). Here is the open letter to the NRSC I wrote back in 2005: http://auh2orepublican.blogspot.com/2005/10/open-letter-to-nrsc-regarding-its.html

And as for Fred Thompson’s post-Super-Tuesday endorsement of John McCain, he actually endorsed McCain later than I did; after Thompson dropped out, I thought about it and came to the conclusion that John McCain, for all his obvious faults, was still the most trustworthy conservative candidate with a chance to win the nomination, since he was far better than Huckabee on economic and defense issues (not to mention on experience and electability), far better than Rudy on social issues (Rudy’s pro-abortion, pro-gun-control stances not only made him unacceptable to me and most other conservatives, but they would have made him a sure loser in November), and far better than Romney on just about every issue, since nothing that came out of Romney’s mouth could be believed (and Romney’s record was as liberal as Arnold’s).

He was the incumbent and sitting member of the committee. The committee will support one of its own - that's what it is there for, and to increase their own numbers. Your analysis is based on an intentionally false premise.

I predicted they'd give Fred a pass when he endorsed McCain in the primary, and I was right on that one too.

Yet another false premise. The contest is over and Fred endorsed the presumptive nominee. Are you flat out lying, stupid, or just trying to play games for your own amusement?

You're going to have to do a lot better than that. Try truthful commentary in the future.

Chafee was a sitting member of the NRSC as an incumbent. NEVER contribute to the NRSC prior to all primaries being completed unless you know you like all of the incumbents in the election cycle. The NRSC will indeed support its own members - that should come as no surprise - that is one of its primary functions.

>> He was the incumbent and sitting member of the committee. The committee will support one of its own - that's what it is there for, and to increase their own numbers. Your analysis is based on an intentionally false premise. <<

NRSC stands for National Republican Senatoral Committee, NOT "National Republican Incumbant Committee". Their stated goal to elect ANYONE with an "R" to the U.S. Senate in every state where there's a contest. If they wish to change that to electing only incumbant Republicans, they should change their name to reflect that fact. Every other "National Republican" organization's stated purpose to stay neutral in the primary, and work their butt off to elect whoever the Republican nominee is in the November.

>> Yet another false premise. The contest is over and Fred endorsed the presumptive nominee. Are you flat out lying <<

The contest is not enough until a candidate receives 1,195 delegates, which makes them the "presumtive nominee" that will automatically get the nomination when the party needs at the national convention to select one. If the remaining 600 delegates do NOT go to McCain, and indeed, go to anyone else BESIDES McCain (say 500 for Huck and 100 for Ron Paul), it goes to a brokered convention, even if McCain has far more delegates than anyone else. Since those are the facts, that means you are either lying or flat out stupid.

>> You're going to have to do a lot better than that. Try truthful commentary in the future. <<

Perhaps you should be addressing your comments to the legions of freepers who continue to insist "Huck is liberal on EVERYTHING but abortion". Now THERE's a flat out lie, unless you can explain how Huck's impecciable proven credentials on pro-2nd amendment, traditional families, winning in Iraq, staunch support for Israel, and so on and so forth, are "liberal" positions. If those are "liberal" views, how come Obama holds the opposite positions?

>> The NRSC will indeed support its own members - that should come as no surprise - that is one of its primary functions. Chafee was a sitting member of the NRSC as an incumbent. NEVER contribute to the NRSC prior to all primaries being completed unless you know you like all of the incumbents in the election cycle. <<

The NRSC not only endorsed Chafee (which is understandable since he was a member of their organziation), but openly ATTACKED a FELLOW Republican candidate, Stephen Laffey, and used GOP contributions to do so. THAT is where they went beyond the pale. They didn't say "re-elect Chafee because he's good on so-and-so issue", they openly lobbied to DEFEAT another Republican. This contradicts the stated goal of their organization -- to elect more Republicans to the U.S. Senate.

(Also, there stated reason for doing so, that Chafee was the "electable" candidate in the primary, was proven completely false by the outcome of the November election, and the polling in that race throughout the campaign.)

Huckabee was head of the National Governor's Association. Let me know when find an example of Huck openly lobbying for the defeat of a fellow GOP governor candidate in the primary. It didn't happen. You also won't find examples of Huck finding a far, far lefist ultra RINO Governor (we're not even talking moderate... to be on par with Chafee, we'd have to say the likes George Ryan) and insisting he agrees with him on "most of the issues", as Fred Thompson insisted when he campaigned with Chafee in the primary. I'd really like to know what "issues" Fred agrees with Chafee on. Perhaps he can cite a long list to back up his statement, right?

Otherwise that would mean either Fred was stupid, trying to be amusing, or flat out lying when he said Chafee was with him on "most issues"

THAT is WHY he lost, and I am soooo happy about that. Who cares if he endorses Obama. He's a 'has been', and that's music to my ears. IF we can get rid of more RINOS this next election then we will be that much closer to taking our party away from them. ;o)

So predictable. Like father, like son. John Chafee was also quite a liberal in his day undermining Reagan.

That’s not good, considering that under US federal law, no person either found guilty through criminal adjudication, or known commonly, to use cocaine is allowed any position requiring access to a security clearance, because of being open to blackmail, or errors in judgment.
