Rep. Tom Lantos Dies

Congressman Tom Lantos of California has died. Lantos was the only Holocaust survivor ever to serve in Congress. His spokeswoman says he died early Monday morning.

Lynne Weill said that Lantos, 80, passed away at the Bethesda Naval Medical Center in suburban Maryland.

But he still kept speaking.

There is a certain honor in having served a cause well. I disagreed with 99% of his positions, but he was a man who followed his beliefs, not the illicit dollar.

I’m a 14 year survivor of esophogeal cancer... very lucky to have found it early (at age 46) by a very good internist and then quickly referred to the best surgeon in the world at Sloan Kettering. 10 days elapsed from the time my tumor was “discovered/determined” and when it was removed. If I was living in Canada... well, I’d hate to consider the result.

Advice to fellow Freepers: when your body starts giving you signals, pay attention and get a good doc to look for the cause.

I don’t wish to speak ill of the dead*, nor do I wish to tell untruths about them, positive or negative, so I will say this.

Tom Lantos had his moments, like when he called former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder a “political prostitute”, and when he said that former French president Jacques-strap Chirac failed to respect the sacrifices of the American troops who liberated France. He also chewed out a Dutch idiot who was whining about Guantanamo, saying that “Europe was not as outraged by Auschwitz as by Guantanamo.”

*This applies to human beings only. When Castro croaks, I’ll be celebrating.

Compare the prayers and best wishes we’re offering Lantos’ family with the vile hatred from the assholes at DU and Kos when Reagan died. There are no words, no numbers, no percentages, no ratios sufficient to describe how much better we are than them.

GERD? Acid Reflux? My doc just doubled my dose last week. The VA keeps pretty good tabs on this. I notice that Roy Scheider also passed. He was 75 and taken by Multiple Meyeloma. My mom was taken by the same disease in 1998. Scheider lasted two years in treatment. From diagnosis to death my mom lasted two weeks.

Remember the Rule of Three. Lantos, Scheider and who's next?

Btw, certainly prayers UP for their families. I disagreed with both politically but both were fine men.

My father is also coming up on 13 years - his EC was also found very early. Best wishes to you - living with the repercussions of the surgery hasn't been easy, but it beats the alternative every time.

You were truely Blessed, given about a 5% survival rate.

I too was Blessed 13 years ago when I survived nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Took a tunor out below my brain and radiated 9 weeks. Lost 65 lbs. in 49 days.

Now I am entering my 5th week of radiation for throat/tongue cancer. Lost 32 lbs. so far. I need better diet and weight management programs than this! :)
