Mayor kicks Marines out of Toledo 1-24th Marines were scheduled for weekend urban warfare training in downtown Toledo, when Carty gave them the boot

By Darsha Philips Posted: Saturday, February 09, 2008 at 2:05 p.m.

TOLEDO, OH -- Mayor Carty Finkbeiner on Friday ordered some 200 members of Company A, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines from Grand Rapids, Michigan, out of Toledo just before the unit was supposed to start a weekend of urban warfare training downtown.

The mayor’s spokesperson, Brian Schwartz said, “the mayor asked them to leave because they frighten people. He did not want them practicing and drilling in a highly visible area."

“I highly doubt that they would be using live ammunition.”

If you bothered to read the story, you would know they are using blanks.

But in a crowded city even toy guns have cost people their lives, and the sound of gunfire could also be hazardous.

I revere and honor the U.S. Marines, but this isn’t a good way to train, and the mayor showed common sense in stopping them.

Have you ever been there? Crime, drugs, children prostitutes, it’s a city out of control. When drug selling is THIS obvious, politicians have to be on the take. It is a volatile city racially too. Toldo may need the Marines shortly. The mayor should be more careful.

This is not as bad as what Berzerkley did...

So, does that make it right, or smart? In what direction is this the crumb mayor LEADING the city? ANSWER: Further down the tubes.

MEU-SOCs have been conducting such exercises in various cities around the country for a decade or more now. They even did so in Toledo last year evidently. I lived in New Orleans in the 1990s and the Marines came through twice for MOUT training. It was all over the news and the city was proud to take part. I watched them assault the old Falstaff Brewery across from the NOPD headquarters myself.

The mayor of Toledo is an unpatriotic slimeball. Pure and simple.

Unfortunately Toledo is like so many other big cities, not unlike New Orleans, that insist on re-electing incompetent democrats into office. Carty was a joke the first time around but didn’t phase the locals.

In his first term, several years ago, he proposed moving the deaf to the area of the airport because they could tolerate the noise. Big thinker here!

"...the mayor offerred the Marines two unpopulated sites."

This pretty much describes most of the downtown area at this time.

While the Mayor may be a jerk or misunderstood, I don't understand why the Marines are trying to do this training in Toledo when they could easily do it in Grand Rapids, Grandville or Byron Center?

It is not like Toledo is the frozen Orlando on the North Coast, whey after the drill they can all go to Disneyworld, like Eli Manning.

Here's Eli at a preflight reception:

I know the picture has nothing to do with the Marines, Toledo or Disneyworld. I just liked the picture and that beautiful woman. Some guys have all the luck!

I hope they make a law that if the cities don’t want the soldiers in THEIR city - They WILL lose federal funds!

As nice as that sounds, the approach would only further the leftist cause of increasing the importance of federal funding. When the Dems get in, then it can be... "don't allow gay marriages, then you don't get federal funds" or whatever they want.

I'm not arguing in favor of these mayors...I'm just saying we should be careful on the response.

If you say so.

“As for worrying about toy guns and such..get a grip!”

Well, tell that to the mothers whose children have been killed by mistaken policemen thinking they we acting in self-defense. It has happened more than once.

There’s an obvious risk that the sound of gunfire in a highly congested civilian area might alarm someone. If a bank robber fires his weapon at the ceiling, and someone dies of a heart attack, a homicide has occurred. Why allow our brave soldiers to be at risk of causing such an unfortunate event in peacetime? It makes no good sense.

Comparing a carefully planned military excercise with a bank robber shooting a gun at a ceiling and someone having a heart attack from the noise is ridiculous. The public is fully informed and the affected businesses are informed. It's obvious from the posts on this topic that many citizens appreciate seeing these excercises and feel safer because of them.

Well, tell that to the mothers whose children have been killed by mistaken policemen thinking they we acting in self-defense. It has happened more than once.

Huh? that makes no sense. You are comparing that to a carefully planned manuever?

There’s an obvious risk that the sound of gunfire in a highly congested civilian area might alarm someone.

Wow, I live in a congested civilian area where one might hear a gunshot during the night, heck, Milwaukee's murder rate has been one of the highest thanks to years of another loopy mayor Nordquist and his village idiot police chief Arthur Jones (thankfully we have a decent chief now). Besides not giving me a heart attack I don't let it keep me from going about my business. I sure would feel better though knowing it was coming from a Marine training excercise.
