We need to face up to the facts of this upcomming election. It seems that electorally it is a bad time to be a Conservative. The Primary turnout was almost two to one for the Democrats, and the mood of the nation seems decidedly anti-Incumbent and anti-Republican.
That being said, it might well be a good thing that the Republican nomination process didn't select a rock ribbed conservative; based upon my present assumtion that our nominee is doomed to electoral defeat no matter who we picked.
I was thinking who I wanted McCain to pick as his Vice Presidential candidate; or more accurately who he could pick that would make the ticket more palatable to me and other Conservatives. That is when I realized that I didn't want McCain to pick a viable Conservative candidate that would then be besmirched by their association with a losing ticket. In that context it might be better if he does pick another RINO. After this election we may hopefully have heard the last of McCain and/or Huckabee's Presidential aspirations.
I am not giving up, I will vote in November, and I encourage everyone else to vote as well; but a President Hillary/Obama (is there a difference politically?)seems to be in the cards. Hopefully every other Conservative and/or Republican will vote as well and we will not give our next Democrat President 'coat tails' by giving them huge majorities in the House and Senate and in the Statehouses.
In America the pendulum swings from right to left and then back again. Does anyone doubt that a Hillary/Obama with a Democrat Congress will scare the bejezus out of the electorate and hopefully lead to Republicans regaining the House and possibly the Senate in the midterms?
What do FReepers think is the best way to either....
a) get McCain/some RINO ticket elected (I think it is unlikely)
b) limit the 'coat-tails' of our probable new Democrat President
c) change our nomination process to get a more Conservative nominee
d) limit the damage to America that will be enacted by a Democrat POTUS and Congress
and
e) restore the faith of the electorate and the GOP in Conservative principles of governance.
I know that staying home is not an option for this Conservative, and neither is giving up. I hope you are all with me in this sentiment.
Any ideas on how best to go forward in advancing a Conservative ideology?
That’s why I am supporting the party’s nominee.
Keep your powder dry.
Either Obama or Clinton looks like a loser to me.
I cannot see Obama taking the south and midwest. He would win NY, NJ, CA, places like that.
Clinton would poll more strongly in union states like Ohio and Wisconsin, but an amazing number of people would never vote for her no matter what.
I would concentrate on electing the right sort of Congressmen and Senators, and not worry about the presidential election.
I’m voting for McCain and the fellow who is running against Congressman Joe Sestak.
I would concentrate on electing the right sort of Congressmen and Senators, and not worry about the presidential election.
That’s pretty much my gameplan.
I won’t vote for McCain, but I will support my other GOP candidates.
Dumping McCain and his straight talk express posse on the Mexican side of the border would be a good first start.
It's not rocket science.
In the meantime, let’s all pray for the good health and continued service of Justices Alito, Roberts, Thomas, and Scalia. The next president will almost certainly get to replace Stevens and Ginsburg as father time and health issues take their toll on those two.
No wonder I am confused!
My Grandfather was the proverbial “rocket Scientist” though, he worked on IR (infrared) tracking and helped catch Che Guevara using IR.
I plan to work to get rid of Jim Costa, a “conservative” Democrat. Yeah right.
I guess we are at the “ lesser of two evils” once again!
I just can’t understand the logic of the American public in voting for a pretty boy “american idol” senator who has no experience or plan but “we together can change America” Hillary? didn’t we have enough of thier nonsense for 8 long years but we still want more? Mccain, a democrate in a red suit who’s best fiends are top liberal democrates like ted Kennedy. This can only be good for talk radio and not for the nation.
this is so silly. mccain is 10 times more conservative than Bush ever was
I’ll be busting a hump for conservative Congress-critters. With or without Sen. McAmnesty, it is a win-win scenario to get conservatives elected or re-elected to Congress.
Take the long view, and think of how long it took to get frmo FDR to Ronald Reagan. Things looked bleak in 1933, but we got through it. Heck they had 80 Democrat senators then, and a communist cabinet.
It is not a bad day to be a Conservative/
It is never a bad day to be a conservative.
Think positive.......
Crying over spilt milk is not only non productive but a waste of emotional energy.
For myself it looks like I will be reluctantly supporting and voting for McCain/Whoever; but I don’t feel good about their prospects.
A split ticket speaks VOLUMES to the party though. If a significant number of Republicans show up to vote, but write in or protest vote for POTUS it might well shock the party back to its (Conservative) senses. But I don’t want to encourage such behavior as it will almost assuredly lead us to a President Obama/Hillary.
What I mostly wish to discourage is STAYING HOME. The only message that sends is that Conservatives are finicky voters, don’t show up at the polls, and that therefore there is no reason to back Conservative issues if you want to get elected (that and it will ensure coat-tails as Dem’s sweep into Congress and the State Houses).
I am pretty sure that this will be Hillary’s win. Too many middle-of-the-roaders that I know want to vote for her.
You are correct, it is always good to have a vision of Constitutional governance, self-reliance, limited government, and strong national defense.
I think the milk is destined to go down the drain, it isn’t spilled yet; I am expressing some relief that if it is destined to get spilled regardless at least it is RINO milk getting poured down the drain! ;)
