We need to face up to the facts of this upcomming election. It seems that electorally it is a bad time to be a Conservative. The Primary turnout was almost two to one for the Democrats, and the mood of the nation seems decidedly anti-Incumbent and anti-Republican.
That being said, it might well be a good thing that the Republican nomination process didn't select a rock ribbed conservative; based upon my present assumtion that our nominee is doomed to electoral defeat no matter who we picked.
I was thinking who I wanted McCain to pick as his Vice Presidential candidate; or more accurately who he could pick that would make the ticket more palatable to me and other Conservatives. That is when I realized that I didn't want McCain to pick a viable Conservative candidate that would then be besmirched by their association with a losing ticket. In that context it might be better if he does pick another RINO. After this election we may hopefully have heard the last of McCain and/or Huckabee's Presidential aspirations.
I am not giving up, I will vote in November, and I encourage everyone else to vote as well; but a President Hillary/Obama (is there a difference politically?)seems to be in the cards. Hopefully every other Conservative and/or Republican will vote as well and we will not give our next Democrat President 'coat tails' by giving them huge majorities in the House and Senate and in the Statehouses.
In America the pendulum swings from right to left and then back again. Does anyone doubt that a Hillary/Obama with a Democrat Congress will scare the bejezus out of the electorate and hopefully lead to Republicans regaining the House and possibly the Senate in the midterms?
What do FReepers think is the best way to either....
a) get McCain/some RINO ticket elected (I think it is unlikely)
b) limit the 'coat-tails' of our probable new Democrat President
c) change our nomination process to get a more Conservative nominee
d) limit the damage to America that will be enacted by a Democrat POTUS and Congress
and
e) restore the faith of the electorate and the GOP in Conservative principles of governance.
I know that staying home is not an option for this Conservative, and neither is giving up. I hope you are all with me in this sentiment.
Any ideas on how best to go forward in advancing a Conservative ideology?
No, 60/40 Obamma takes it.

I think a McAmnesty presidency would destroy the GOP in Congress. I’d much rather see the dems take the White House, which I believe would ensure a takeover of Congress by conservative Republicans again (’94, ‘80 are good examples).
That is why I plan on voting for him in November, and I really do hope he wins; but I don’t really see it in the cards - no matter who we picked as our nominee (and why all the ire at the RNC/GOP, they didn’t give McCain his wins in the primaries?).

Vote for the GOP nominee.
Yea that will get you miles around here. Bush got us here. The current situation is in response to his being linked to the conservative movement.
That’s why I’m so pi$$ed at all of you who are so willing to cede the election to the RATs.

There truly needs to be an “entity” whose major focus is on two things: 1.) Getting a large enough turnout of conservative voters to the polls throughout the U.S. on November 4 to successfully elect “truly conservative” candidates to Congress and to all political levels below Congress; and 2.) FINDING LARGE ENOUGH NUMBERS OF DECENT TRUE CONSERVATIVES TO SERIOUSLY RUN FOR POLITICAL OFFICES AT EACH AND EVERY LEVEL OF POLITICAL OFFICE IN ORDER TO SUCCEED IN BLOCKING ALL “LEFTIST” LEGISLATION FROM EVER SEEING THE LIGHT OF DAY. This should truly be the main focus of conservatives from now on.
>>The next president will almost certainly get to replace Stevens and Ginsburg as father time and health issues take their toll on those two<<
Stevens IS Father Time. At 87, he is the second oldest justice in Supreme Court history, and it seems he is not quitting soon. He may stay on the Court until he is as old as Strom Thurmond when he completed his last term in the Senate.
Hopefully his pride will keep him in through the next (probable) Democrat administration and he lives to see the beginning but not the end of a new Republican administration.
