As I watched Mitt Romney speak at CPAC 2008, and announce the suspension of his campaign, I realized that it was the first moment I actually liked him and felt like he might be a good candidate for president.
He was direct, clear, conservative and most of all, compelling. It was by far the best speech he has given to date.
It reminded me of Al Gore in his final concession speech after the Florida debacle, to the extent that it was the first time I thought Gore gave a good speech (even though he's an arrogant liberal scumbag, it was a good speech).
Romney, why did you wait til your concession speech to truly lead?

I didn’t hear the speech, I was driving and listening to Dennis Miller. He said almost exactly what you wrote.

why did you wait til your concession speechProof that listening to advisors on what to say, and trying to be 'so careful' you do not make a mistake, IS a mistake.

I think Romney is an arrogant liberal scumbag and any speech which ends his candidacy is a good speech in my book!

I had that thought about 2/3 of the way through his speech. It was real, and honestly, it was the very first time that I thought Romney was honest and real and that his conservatism was real.
THOMPSON ROMNEY 2008.
Sigh.

Too late. Some of us noticed his leadership qualities before. Not that I am bitter, or anything, but it sure is frustrating to have leadership talent like Romney to tap, and end up with a basket case like McCain.

Romney has given plenty of speeches as good as this one. He was great in the debates, too. Conservatives just didn’t want to pay attention until the only other choice was McCain, and by then it was too late. Once again we have made the perfect the enemy of the good.

I felt the same exact way. I was watching Chrissy speak to Peggy Noonan who said I bet there are Conservatives out there right now with buyers remorse. Romney was really good today and I actually liked him alot.

I noticed generic leadership qualities before. Good looking, well spoken, crisp, etc. BUT, he did not do a good job of speaking his heart and showing that he was a real conservative.
Romney to this point has pushed HIMSELF, not CONSERVATISM. His loss is his own fault.

Mitt Romney has been giving great speeches since his CPAC speech LAST YEAR.
People were not listening.

I saw him talk like that in 1994--very real and honest. Only then, he was a liberal.
Sorry, not buying.

You have not been listening to him.
Had you attending his events or listened to his speeches you would have heard a full throated and passionate push of Conservative values.

I STILL WON'T SUPPORT McCAIN!!! Grab your checkbooks, and keep them closed.
NOT ONE PENNY!!!, will be our battle call.
Conservatives care about the United States so much ...
that they're willing to DEFEAT McCain to save the nation!!!
McCain needs to wake up and smell the "VILE"!!!
"Bipartisanship" Is A Dirty Word; and RUSH: "We want to defeat them"
THIS IS WAR!!!
The only LEADERSHIP we have is RUSH!!!

I agree. It was really a good speech, it was gracious and magnanimous, and belied the nastiness he showed in the campaign. I especially liked his references to the fact that China and India are both gaining on us. Having returned from China in November, I saw first-hand a booming economy and a scary future for western democracies.

You have a secret man-crush on Romney, don’t you?
Come on, just admit it. It’s a lot more acceptable than it used to be.

I assume what you say is true, that Romney has given many other speeches like this. However, I am a very very busy single parent and small business owner, and my exposure to Romney (other than his website) speeches was limited to his talk during the vote coverage, and debates.
Romney did not come close to his CPAC 2008 speech in those things. The self-congratulating cheerleading BS when he had media attention in post-vote speeches, and his plastic overly-rehearsed debate performances, with an asanine word-game fight with McCain, left me feeling totally unimpressed with him.
He was great today, and he should have communiated just like this on his numerous other opportunities.
To: Bronco_Buster_FweetHyagh
Is Romney French? He folded like a cheap suit. I would assume that his backbone of Conservative convictions was not worth his cash.
What a Wanker. I am glad to see him go.

You are irrational.
Mitt Romney was a conservative in 1994.
If you were paying attention in 1994 it was considered the CONSERVATIVE position that government stay out of abortion.
