How a 3rd-Party Candidate Steals This Election
02/03/2008 | davidlachnicht

So, when the Democrat Party chooses Hillary, and the RINOs choose McCain, how in the 11th hour can a third party candidate steal the election away from the ol' guard? By gathering up the disenfranchised from both parties.

Easy, if you had a candidate who could identify with African-Americans (who are about to have their faces spat on by the Dems when Obama and his supporters are left out of convention) and could equally identify with the Conservatives (who have been offered no one who conservative Socially, AND Fiscally, AND Security-wise).

There is such a candidate. His name is Alan Keyes.

Now before you jump in that Keyes vs. Obama in Illinois was ugly and no one who supported Obama would ever support Keyes, keep in mind it didn't play nationally, and if you weren't for Illinois or a border state, you missed it. A

So the question becomes, are there enough disenfranchised Blacks and Conservatives (and both) to win?

A great motivator, come election time, is when folks hate feeling like they're getting screwed yet again by their so-called representatives. And both groups are EAGER to "send a message" to their parties that they are not being represented.

As much as I like Keyes, he would not have a chance of even winning one state — let alone an electoral college majority.

Michael Steele of Maryland is not a 100% pure conservative. But he’s really good and he’s actually won an election before.

I'm not a Paul guy. But reality tells me that Ron Paul has a much better chance to bridge this gap for both parties and he has some level of momentum in this election.

Keyes has nothing.

A 3rd party candidate would need at least 40% and that won’t happen.

Just because he is black, doesn’t mean he’d get the black vote (Keyes). As a voting group, blacks are probably more loyal to the Democrats than they are to any color. I’ll bet a black, conservative Republican candidate wouldn’t get close to 50% of the black vote.

I like Alan Keyes, but as a politician he is totally hopeless.

Alan Keyes will never, ever be President of the United States.

The biggest drawback to 3rd party candidates will fall on the GOP - The dems have such a (ick) "diverse" coalition, that always supports the eventual nominee, that the "splinter" of votes won't affect their hard-core support.

Could be different with the GOP...enough of the hard-core conservatives bolt and either don't vote or go 3rd party, is the same as a vote for Hillary or Obama

That thought alone, especially another Clinton in the White House....frightens me MORE than a McCain White House (if he is smart, he'll have a strong conservative VP running mate)...

It's enough to ensure that I will be a BGR on election day.

I’d like to think your point is valid. But it aint.

I like Keyes. But he stands less a chance of being the 3rd party candidate than Ron Paul does.

But one thing is clear: If McCain should win the GOP nomination, then the conservative 3rd party candidate (whoever that may be) will pull votes away from McCain allowing Hillary a win next November.

Knowing this to be true, I will still vote according to my principles and vote for a conservative.

If one runs. Otherwise I sleep in.

Actually, a third party candidate might need just over 33.3 precent of the vote to win, perhaps even lower if there are other third party candidates. Keyes, of course, would be very lucky to get 3.3 even under the best of circumstances.

If Alan Keyes were the only candidate running he still wouldn’t win.

I would give Keyes some consideration if he had a chance, but he doesn’t have much of one. Besides, our primary was last week.

I think our country missed its chance with Fred Thompson. He wasn’t shiny and polished as Romney, and I have seen better dressed candidates than Fred. But he put our country first and he said so. We missed our chance.
