A week after blasting the Marines as "unwelcome intruders" in Berkeley, two City Council members want the city to back off the declaration that ignited the wrath of the nation's right wing and inspired a Republican senator to try to sever Berkeley's federal funding.
Council members Betty Olds and Laurie Capitelli on Monday proposed that Berkeley rescind its letter to the U.S. Marine Corps that stated that the downtown Berkeley recruiting center "is not welcome in our city," and publicly declare that Berkeley is against the war but supports the troops.
The City Council will vote on Olds' and Capitelli's two proposals at its meeting next Tuesday.
"I think we shouldn't be seen across the country as hating the Marines," said Olds, who voted against last week's proposals. "If you make a mistake, like we did, you should admit it and correct it and move on."

Snort!
“I think we shouldn’t be seen across the country as hating the Marines,” said Olds”
Too late, idiots. So funny how you leftists collapse like a house of cards when your money is going to be taken away.
Hypocritical jokes.
Words mean things.......
She doesn’t say “we shouldn’t hate the Marines” but says “we shouldn’t be seen as hating.”
Translation: We still hate them.
I don’t think Berkley has it in them to rescind the letter. It’s all about “them.” If anything, they will put out a finely-nuanced watered-down sniff-sniff diatribe tha twon’t change anything.
I say, keep the pressure on.
...before your servers melt from the email and your desks collapse under the snail mail. Too late.
Key words: "shouldn't be seen".
If less notice had been taken, this policy would not be challenged from within Berserkely Council.
Oh, and keep the dollars out!
Sorry Olds, you made a mistake all right -- the mistake of letting the public see how you really feel about a fine American institution like the US Marine Corps. It's fine that you will admit it, but it takes a bit more than rescinding a letter to correct it. And I don't think those of us who love our country and our men and women in uniform are quite ready to move on.

CALL THEM UP, IT WORKS!
Ah well. Money talks, idealism walks.
Forget redemption. The damage is done and Berkley is lower than whale pooh.
But we're willing to hate them a little less vocally if it'll keep us from losing money.
So much for principle, eh?
“I think we shouldn’t be seen across the country as hating the Marines,” said Olds
Too late...your collective political position is already well known to those of us who have a true respect for those who choose to serve.
Better you should spend time drafting your secession legislation.
I like the line,”ignited the wrath of the nation’s right wing.” I guess the assumption is that if one objected, one is likely part of the extreme right.
Too late!
The city council of Berkely has revealed to us that they are treasonous, treacherous haters of anything and everything that is right about this Country.
They have earned our contempt and our disdain, and no backpedaling they do now can reverse it.
...ignited the Nation.
