Bob Knight, the winningest NCAA men's division I basketball coach in history, has retired as Texas Tech's coach effective immediately.
Knight, 67, won his 902nd game Saturday when the Red Raiders downed Oklahoma State. He will be replaced by his son, Pat. Knight informed athletic director Gerald Myers of his decision Monday morning.
Knight won three national titles at Indiana, in 1976, '81 and '87. In all, he took the Hoosiers to 24 NCAA tournament appearances and reached the Final Four two other times.
During his tenure at Texas Tech, Knight was 138-82, and he led the Red Raiders to the NCAA Tournament in four of his six seasons, reaching the Sweet 16 in 2005. The Red Raiders are 11-8 this season and 3-3 in the Big 12, tied for sixth in the conference with Oklahoma

That’s huge. Bobby Knight is a polarizing person, certainly with his detractors and supporters, but as a father of a collegiate athlete, that’s ultimately what I am concerned about. I was thrilled this year when my son’s team sent all of the parents the top ten team goals for the year - academics were the top three goals.
The shooting story was a joke. It was three blocks from my house and they guy that said he shot at him is a joke in town and Coach never shot at him. He was bird hunting...but you guys believe what you want.... after all you are sooooo close to the story!!
Agreed.
If you need a search tutorial, there are many FR links.
Here in the TC’s we hear nothing but great things about Mr. Knight.
“When Coach Knight tells me to jump, I get in the air and wait for further instructions.” - Steve Alford, All-American at Indiana University under Bobby Knight.
And, Alford could barely “get in the air” when he jumped!
I’d have him and his family over for dinner. I’d serve him well.
Have you seen this???
Positioning himself for the brokered convention?
He’s a bully and a prick.
I’d love to see him mouth off to somebody his own size and get humilated.
LMAO!
Chairs everywhere breath a sigh of relief.
Doesn’t really matter, though, does it?
If I had a wish for a kid with talent I'd want him to be coached by John Wooden.
He did not have the luxury of having Sam Gilbert as a booster, as John Wooden did.
I’m sure you’ve already heard this ping.
I believe Knight relished the bad press. For most of his career, his school's fans could enjoy the ride. I wish he had spent most of his career at Minnesota rather than Indiana.
