Bob Knight, the winningest NCAA men's division I basketball coach in history, has retired as Texas Tech's coach effective immediately.

Knight, 67, won his 902nd game Saturday when the Red Raiders downed Oklahoma State. He will be replaced by his son, Pat. Knight informed athletic director Gerald Myers of his decision Monday morning.

Knight won three national titles at Indiana, in 1976, '81 and '87. In all, he took the Hoosiers to 24 NCAA tournament appearances and reached the Final Four two other times.

During his tenure at Texas Tech, Knight was 138-82, and he led the Red Raiders to the NCAA Tournament in four of his six seasons, reaching the Sweet 16 in 2005. The Red Raiders are 11-8 this season and 3-3 in the Big 12, tied for sixth in the conference with Oklahoma

I've worked with Bobby. Great coach; if my son were a basketball player I'd like him to be coached by this man.

Probably has the best record in NCAA for kids in his program graduating from college. And heck, what’s a chair or two thrown at the right guy?

Knight’s three national titles are tied for third-most, behind John Wooden’s 10 and Adolph Rupp’s four. Mike Krzyzewski, who played for Knight at Army, also has three titles. Krzyzewski began his college coaching career as a graduate assistant at Indiana under Knight in 1974.

Knight’s five Final Four appearances are tied for sixth all-time.

Lubbock is where I live and we have been happy to have Coach Knight as our head bb coach at Texas Tech. One of the best coaches in the system.

We Texas Tech fans now support Pat Knight 150%.

Thanks Coach for the memories.... I am honored to have been at all of your games here in Lubbock and Saturday was the last one we saw you coach. It was my honor to have my son and grandson with me in the stands.

I’ll bet he quit as a bet on the Superbowl game. I suspect that he quit so his son, Pat, would be coach at the end of the year making it harder to fire him as opposed to just not hiring him if BK quit at the end of the season.

While a great coach, he hasn’t won a title in 20 years. He is no John Wooden.

Knight accomplished the near impossible task of making a sport interesting. His temper added a spice to the sports world for us non fans. I've liked him since I was a kid, mostly for his temper, and I loved "a season on the brink."

And yes, I'm totally serious about this post. I think he's a great guy and IU screwed up big time by letting him go.

Probably something interesting. That's a big no-no in the world of college sports.

Didn’t know about this till I read about this on the internet a few minutes ago. I geuss Bob Knight wants to spend more time hunting and fishing. Maybe he can get a show on the Outdoor Channel. As an Ohio State grad we always had a great rivilary with Indiana when he was there (I remember one night back in the late 80’s I went to the gym on the night of the IU-OSU basketbal game and the gym was almost empty). But we always had great respect for IU under Knight. People would always advance IU in their March Madness brackets when Knight was at IU simply because of Knight’s coaching ability.

"Wonder what he did this time?"

Word is that he did nothing. He is tired of dealing with the kids these days ... said that they are not what they used to be. Indicated that the parents were doing nothing to make his role any easier. They (the kids) feel entitled and don't listen as he thinks that they should. He has to tell them the same things over and over again and it has gotten old. The parents either aren't there at all or coddle the little darlings into thinking that the world owes them something.

Miles Brand is an idiot who wanted Knight gone. Now Miles Brand is screwing up the NCAA.

You will never hear the good things he has done. Media doesn’t want to cover those stories but we have plenty

Good riddance. It is bad enough that players think they are above any rules of behavior, but when a coach conducts himself as Knight has, it is even worse. I don’t care how much of a winning coach he may be, but I do care how his tempermental behavior sets a bad impression for the young.

Do we not have enough of a breakdown in civility without someone like Knight adding to the problem?
