Many in the media have decamped to sunny California, and for good reason: The state not only provides the biggest targets to campaigns on both sides looking to score their share of the hundreds of delegates available tomorrow, it also allows reporters to stay up late as results roll in. Going to bed at 1 a.m. after the rest of the country has reported is a lot easier than going to bed at 4 a.m.
For at least one candidate, though, California will not be the story. John McCain, once an afterthought, then the front-runner, is seeing his poll numbers in the Golden State sink again. After enjoying leads as high as 19 points, just days after his New Hampshire win, and 13 points, in a CNN/Politico/LA Times poll last week, McCain now owns just a 2-point lead in the latest RCP California Average.
The news may be worse than that. A tracking poll for C-SPAN and Reuters, taken by Zogby, shows distinct movement toward McCain's chief opponent in California, Mitt Romney. After taking the lead yesterday, Romney is now up by eight points. A victory by such a small margin would only give Romney a few extra delegates -- the state allocates most of their Republican delegates in a winner-take-all by Congressional District fashion.
In anticipation of such a result, McCain's team has started downplaying expectations and California's relative importance. "We're going to do very well in the winner-take-all states in the Northeast," spokesman Brian Rogers told Politics Nation today. "California is a toss-up that, at the end of the day, won't be the big story [as long as] we pick up some delegates."

“How about some fairness? Any defense of McCain on this or any other thread?
Those who dont support McCain (the nominee) are welcome to leave the party. This is really sad the way you are attacking a guy like McCain.”
Typical McCain supporter.
“Support McCain or get the hell out of the party” - nice.
Was just watching a Luntz focus group on Hannity and they picked Mitt’s add about how Hilliary has never run anything as the most effective republican add. The numbers were off the charts! Pretty cool!
That’s what struck me. The Red/Blue just showed the results of a presidential vote, whereas our Republic is much more diverse than the bipolar red/blue view.
Thanks!
Just pitiful.
Go Mitt! Keep the momentum going.
John McCain said again at his rally that he would work with Democrats. I don’t mind working with the other side to come together with things that we all agree on, but I fear John McCain will comprise too much, as his record indicates.Indeed. We all know what types of legislation results when McCain says he would work with Democrats, legislation like The Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (aka McCain-Feingold), The McCain-Kennedy Immigration Bill, and The Lieberman-McCain Climate Stewardship Act. No thanks. If McCain is the nominee I'll vote Democrat because it would be easier for the Republican senators to resist a Democrat president than a victorious McCain presidency.
It’s amazing to me that the GOP would nominate someone who can’t even win California. It’s the biggest state in the country and he’s about to get whupped. Do they really expect him to win the general when the only states he’s racking up are those where liberals and independents are voting for him?
If Mitt Romney truly does win California, will it, along with everything else that happens on Super Tuesday, be enough to truly keep Mitt running for POTUS beyond Super Tuesday?

Knock yourself out.

Oh, I plan to. I will be a write-in vote next November if McCain wins the nomination. I’d rather defeat Clinton in ‘12 than try to reelect John McCain. Don’t worry; I’m a Romney supporter, but this has nothing to do with Romney. I promised myself a year ago that I’d never vote for John McCain. The amnesty debacle only steeled my determination.
And I am far, far from the only one. John McCain cannot win the election without the very conservatives into whose face he has smashed the heel of his boot.
~”This is really sad the way you are attacking a guy like McCain.”~
A guy like McCain? A guy who has taken seeming delight in stabbing conservatism in the back for the last decade? A guy who has sold himself to the mainstream media for the proverbial forty pieces? A guy who has been instrumental in stonewalling so many conservative initiatives for the pathetic sake of his vaunted “bipartisanship?” A guy who has now resorted to smears and stalking horses to win? A guy who isn’t even -trying- to court conservatism in order to be elected?
That guy?
I await your “fairness.”
How are you doing?
Likely, yes.

I think so. With the Northeast WTA troika, there’s no doubt that McCain will win more delegates tomorrow. That can’t be helped. The question is, what happens after? The calculus of the decision will be dependent on whether Romney has a reasonable chance of clinching the nomination by competing in the 20 or so remaining states. Though a CA victory would only net Romney maybe 30-50 delegates, it would be a massive psychological boost that would greatly enhance his chances of overcoming the inevitable deficit.
One thing’s for sure: Romney will continue to need our grassroots support (phone calls, etc.) and our donations if he’s to keep going. If he does well enough tomorrow, though, I think conservatives will come through.
Fine, thanks. Snowy here this evening. Good night for curling up with FR. :-)
No I’m in CO. Romney has sure made an effort to make sure we get out tomorrow. McCain, I guess, is counting on NY.
Oh, is this the Coppola lady? I can’t understand why they think we’d be swayed by some of these people.

TRANSLATION: I will do quite well in liberal northeastern states which agree with my political ideology and do not vote Republican in the General Elections.
Please....vote for Mitt on Tuesday so I have the chance to vote for him on the 12th!
Thanks. (I'm RIV and I approved this message.)
They're keeping the robo callers pretty busy here in Missouri, too. We've gotten FIVE for McCain in the past two days.
