WASHINGTON (Map, News) - Sen. John McCain, riding a wave of primary victories and favorable polls, is seen by many Illinois Republican insiders as the front-runner in the state's presidential primary.
...
Romney's Illinois highlight was a presidential straw poll at the state fair last August, when about 1,000 people cast votes and he won with 40 percent - twice as much as the second-place finisher, Fred Thompson, who now backs McCain.

"Springfield's Bob Kjellander, a Republican National Committee member, and Bloomington's Mike Stokke, a former political aide to Hastert - both Romney delegates - said McCain is the favorite in Illinois"
See that 1st name 'KJ'. That sob works with 'my' current Dem Gov Rod Blowaguyavich(sp?) like they were GD brothers. He basically helped the ijit get elected and made $600K from him on a Bond Deal to boot.
Right now they're doing their damnedest to take a dive in the Senate race against Turbin Durbin. They've offered up a Moe, Larry and Curly as 'candidates'. In English - no one whose ever been heard of and have ZERO experience in politics. They've giving the election to Durbin.
The entire IL (cough) gop cabal in Springfield isn't worth 'spit'. As long as they can line their pockets they don't care WHO wins, including Hillary or 'Barry'.
You have no good reason to say that about Fred.
“If FRed were going to endorse someone, hed have done at a time when it could make a difference. Not the day before.”
Maybe. Here’s what McCain says.
McCain made a stop in Nashville this weekend.
He held a fundraiser on Saturday in Green Hills and then spoke at the Montgomery Bell Academy.
He was asked about an endorsement from Fred Thompson, the former Tennessee senator who recently dropped out of the race.
McCain said, “Oh I am sure Fred will be very supportive at the right time. Frankly, we are too close of friends for me to outright ask him.”

In fact I am sure of it.
Yes it will be close, but the reality is that Mitt’s drawbacks, the ones his “supporters” so easily gloss over or attack everyone for questioning, kill him in the big show.
He wanted the job, but not to the point he wanted to play “American Idol”.
No, because it became all too obvious with his attacks on Romney when he would have been attacking McCain if he were really trying to win the nomination for himself.
Thank you!
Heres what McCain says.

Thank you, AuntB.
I’ve seen his comments, but I’ve yet to hear the same sentiments from Fred.
It’s all well and good for McCain to want his endorsement, which I’m sure he would walk through a wall of fire to get.
But, until I hear it from Fred, it’s all speculation without any substance.
BTW, since he was asked the question, would you expect him to say, “Fred hates me.”? ;o)
The McCain campaign floated the rumor that Fred would drop out and endorse him in Iowa too. Pretty much broke any ties of friendship that might have existed. Fred is the one that called Mac a “Pro-life liberal” not long after that.
I mean you shill like a giddy school girl for Mitt, I have never seen anything like it. You keep telling us how horrible we are for not “seeing the light”. It is like a fool in love selling their folks on their new significant other.
If FDT was a stalking horse for McCain he is or was a piss poor one.
Why did he waste his time with a run? He should have stayed out since McCain was in, right? (hint, he was asked to run by several in the GOP who did not like McCain)
Why did he withdraw when he did instead of waiting until next week, that would have been the tactical thing to do, anyone with any knowledge of political strategy knows the horse doesn’t go down until the full benefit is realized. (hint, he was not a stalking n horse for anyone)
If Thompson was a stalking horse, where is the endorsement of McCain? (hint, the two have had a political falling out, not to say they may not make up, but it ain’t happened yet.)
Stick to fawning over Mitt Romney and leave politics to those who understand it. If you, and others like you, had done that at first we could have avoided this fiasco.
Sad thing is, if he does, we are SOL on getting anyone near the office this cycle, neither Huck nor Mitt will take the general. Even if McCain doesn’t crack and wins both but chooses a moderate for VP we are still SOL.
Irony of all ironies is that McCain, if he picks right, could be the very vehicle to getting a Conservative in office, and because of the short sightedness of all now days, the idea will get shredded.
If Fred was a huge McCain fan, why did he run againest him?
After all McCain was in the race LONG before Fred.
Bet you are a huckster fan, only ones dumb enough to believe that stuff.
It would be nice if McCain picks a conservative as his VP, but there’s no reason for him to do so, if personal animosity is the key issue. It’s obvious that the conservative movement hates him, so the only reason he’d choose a conservative would be to mollify them and unite them behind that VP candidate.
That would be a rational thing to do.
We’ll see if McCain is rational.
Well that tears it, the last thing one can say about McCain is he is rational.
I agree. He doesn’t have the good sense to select a conservative VP.
Who knows, though. Miracles still happen.
He’ll have a mind to 2012 re-election, so I’m think of Crist from Florida as his running mate.
I don’t know anything about him, but I do know that Crist is largely responsible for McCain’s win in Fla, and that win is what put McCain on a roll.
