WASHINGTON (Map, News) - Sen. John McCain, riding a wave of primary victories and favorable polls, is seen by many Illinois Republican insiders as the front-runner in the state's presidential primary.
...
Romney's Illinois highlight was a presidential straw poll at the state fair last August, when about 1,000 people cast votes and he won with 40 percent - twice as much as the second-place finisher, Fred Thompson, who now backs McCain.

I’ve not heard of such an annoucement, and you can be sure it would have been plastered all over Free Republic.
Thompson’s a pragmatist, though, and RCP does have McCain up by 18 points over Romney.
McCain’s all but inevitable for the Republicans unless Romney does something mind-boggling in the next 8 hours.
FRED HAS NOT SAID HE IS BACKING McCAIN
Since the title is altered, shouldn’t that have a VANITY tagged to it?
FRed hasn’t endorsed anyone.
Why, because he ran against your preferred candidate? Grow up and change your diaper, wudja?
Think about it.
If FRed were going to endorse someone, he’d have done at a time when it could make a difference. Not the day before.
Duncan Hunter did it smartly, by endorsing loudly and proudly, his love and strong support for hYukster.
Then you’re a stalking horse for Hilary Clinton?
Well yeah, but if McCain sweeps tomorrow and eliminates Huck and Mitt, then pretty much anybody who votes Republican is de facto "endorsing McCain".
I thought it was the correct way to copy the original title and then add in parentheses what was significant about the article... and that Vanity was for un-sourced posting?
They're confusing IL ex Gov JIM Thompson with Fred.
(2nd Paragraph)
The Arizona senator has been gathering major endorsements since his win in Florida last week, including from former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who dropped out of the race after that vote. Two former Illinois governors, James R. Thompson and Jim Edgar, said they were switching their endorsements from Giuliani to McCain.
So it's JIM Thompson of IL, not FRED Thompson.
And not that it matters but I've lived my entire 59 years in IL (feel my pain) and have never heard of this 'Examiner'. And in another article I glanced on their site it had errors in it too.
Sounds like Dennis is making sh!t up.
It’s possible to argue that you didn’t vote “for” someone (McCain), but rather that you voted “against” someone else (Hillary/Obama.)
It’s also possible to argue in the general election that you voted “for” someone’s VP selection in order to have a future conservative candidate in place.
I was just bustin’ your chops cause I didn’t like the lie contained in the article. LOL
Well, I did not think it was just a typo, because the paragraph that I quoted that mentions Fred Thompson was referencing a presidential straw poll... and Jim Thompson was not running for president, AFAIK.
Read the article. The 2nd paragraph says that IL ex Gov JIM Thompsom is now backing McInsane (instead of Rudy). So it's either an outright lie by AP or a typo (all those Thompson's look alike ya know)
And would Fred ever have endorsed Rooty?????
I think you’re exactly right. But it’s astonishing that some folks here swallow it whole.
We’ll know soon enough, won’t we? Do you think Fred will support McCain?
I have not seen that once anywhere and I have been looking.
Thus I call B.S. on you.
