A HOSPITAL porter has been sacked after a row over a crucifix being covered up in a prayer room.
Joseph Protano, 54, was suspended four days after the incident last month at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury.
He has now been dismissed for gross misconduct, but intends to appeal.
Police quizzed him for four hours last month, on suspicion of religiously aggravated assault, but he was released without charge.
He denies the allegations and must wait to see if police take any action.
The row centres on a prayer room available to staff and visitors of all faiths at the hospital, which contains a Virgin Mary statue and a crucifix.
Mr Protano, a Roman Catholic who has worked two years at the hospital, entered the room when three Muslims were using it - two patients and a doctor.
An argument broke out after he asked them to remove a cloth covering the crucifix and statue and to turn a picture of the Virgin Mary face up.
He said he was unable to comment on his sacking as the police probe and his plans to appeal were ongoing.
But a friend said: "He was very shocked at the decision.
"He thinks he has been treated terribly.
"He loves his job and doesn't do it for the money - until recently, his employers were paying just £5.88 an hour.
"They are saying he should not have gone into the prayer room and it is alleged he used racist language, which he totally refutes.
"His pay has been stopped, even though he intends to appeal, and he has had to sign on for benefits."
The friend said Mr Protano went into the prayer room about six times a day to check the statue and crucifix were not left covered.
He said as a Christian, he felt it could be upsetting for visiting parents to find them covered up.
The case has angered many hospital staff, who think he has been treated unfairly.
Police said a file had been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service to decide on any further action.

As long as the Muslim population remains around 1% of any given country they will be regarded as a peace-loving minority and not as a threat to anyone. In fact, they may be featured in articles and films, stereotyped for their colorful uniqueness.
At 2% and 3% they begin to proselytize from other ethnic minorities and disaffected groups with major recruiting from the jails and among street gangs [Europe, Australia, USA and Japan]. Six percent of US prison inmates are Muslim. Like any other minority, they won’t integrate, but work to build their own separate community.
From 5% on they exercise an inordinate influence in proportion to their percentage of the population. South Africa's Muslim population is 2%, but they control 35% of the businesses, a large percentage of the banks and have five Cabinet seats while Christians (77% of the population) have none.
They will push for the introduction of halaal (clean by Islamic standards) food, thereby securing food preparation jobs for Muslims. They will increase pressure on supermarket chains to feature it on their shelves (along with threats for failure to comply).
At this point, they will work to get the ruling government to allow them to rule themselves under Sharia; Islamic Law. The ultimate goal of Islam is not to convert the world, but to establish Sharia law over the entire world.
When Muslims reach 10% of the population, they will increase lawlessness as a means of complaint about their conditions. (Ei: car-burnings in France last October.) Any non-Muslim action that offends Islam will result in uprisings and threats.
After reaching 20% expect hair-trigger rioting, jihad militia formations, sporadic killings and church and synagogue burning (India, Mindanao, Philippines).
At 40% you will find widespread massacres, chronic terror attacks and ongoing militia warfare [Indonesia].
From 60% you may expect unfettered persecution of non-believers and other religions, sporadic ethnic cleansing (genocide), use of Sharia Law as a weapon and Jizya (infidel tax). (Sudan, Kosovo, Lebanon and Egypt).
After 80% expect State run ethnic cleansing and genocide [Western Papua (New Guinea), Iran, Biafra, Turkey and North Nigeria].
100% will usher in the peace of "Dar-es-Salaam" - House of Peace - as in Saudi Arabia, Libya and Yemen.
Covering up the Crucifix and Mary are NOT ‘crimes’ but UNcovering them are...

Forget Lononistan it’s already here in NYC. Schools have set up prayer rooms for Muslim studentts with rugs and wash bowls. Yet if I put up so much as a religious Christmas card in my classroom I get summoned to a meeting with the principal.
The Muslims do not realize that they are being used by the secular lefties as a stalking horse in their war on Christianity. If they do realize it, it’s because they are using the Left in their own Jihad against Christianity. I think it’s past time for Christian of all denominations to realise that the assaults on our faith and practice are not inconveiences or pinpricks, but an attempt to marginalize and eventually eliminate our faithful existence.
Are these public schools?
Yup, several High Schools in Brooklyn.
From then on such disputes would be handled privately and without murder and violence.
The Eastern rite churches did not sign on (since they weren't involved), the Jews weren't invited to sign, and the Moslems weren't involved either.
What we need to do is return to the princples underlying the Treaty of Westphalia and where an adherent of a religion that didn't sign on seeks to visit our countries they should be rejected.
Quite possibly a standard form could be created for this purpose, backed with personal peace bonds and so forth.
No doubt this would put the ACLU out of business in the United States while crushing the Wahabi efforts in Western Europe. Might even put a crimp on the Greeks.
Where’s the msm on this issue? Has the NY Post written an article? If special accomodations are being made for the Muslims then similar ones should be made for Christians and Jews. Brookly used to be a major Jewish stronghold. How close is the Muslim community to the Jewish neighborhood?
Muslims out of the West. People who hate Western cultures should not be allowed to live in the West. They should be required to return to and stay in their Islamic hell hole countries of origin, natal or ancestral. See my tagline.
OTOH, the large growth of Muslims around the world can be attributed to their unrestrained reproduction. My pastor's brother lives in Sweden. He said it is not uncommon for Muslim families, already poor, to have 12 to 15 children. Since they can't afford to care for them, they drain the resources of state programs intended for Swedish citizens. (See my post above from Pete Hammond's book).
The secular lefties also do not realize that in time their stalking horse will grow fangs and sup on them.
It’s just a sign of muslim intolerance. I don’t see why they need to cover up the signs of other people’s faith at all. If I was going into an ecumenical prayer room, I wouldn’t feel the need, for instance, to cover up a koran.
Those who are indifferent to Christianity better get on board here. It is not just Christianity that jihadists want to eliminate.

This is actually “Manchesterstan”, in the North of England. After Leeds, one of the large Muslim population centers.
IMO, this is responsible for new business, construction, etc. favoring nearby Liverpool (the "European Capital of Culture 2008"...:^), which hasn’t managed to become quite a Muslim center yet...
PS .. knowing Liverpool, that probably should be Capital of Kulture 2008... that's how the Beatles would have spelt it...:^)
