I never thought I would be picky in choosing a Republican presidential nominee. After all, the gap between Republicans and Democrats has become so very wide on issues such as taxes, free trade, abortion, education and foreign policy that it didnt seem to matter which Republican was nominated. In spite of tiny divergences with conservative principles, I thought, any Republican nominee would be a Godsend against a liberal Democrat.
How wrong I was.
My assumption was that no candidate would even make the cut to the Republican shortlist without adherence to the principles of the Reagan coalition. But who thought it would end up being too much to expect candidates to be economic, social and foreign policy conservatives?

I’m with you.
Although I am years older than Fred, every time I saw and listened to him talk, I felt as if I was hearing words of wisdom from my long deceased beloved Grandfather.
I could vote for that ticket. Then I wouldn’t be forced to write in Fred
Maybe I need my eyes checked or something, but I don't consider Fred "ugly" at all. I think he's quite handsome in a manly sort of way. I never have liked girly men.
You guys got a complete conservative sitting right in front of you but all you want to do is complain & then pick the lesser of the four RINOs (Romney).
It's quite clear that most of you guys don't want true liberty, just the same old watered-down conservatism that'll make you feel good because you think it'll beat Hillary but will just continue the head-first slide into socialism.
All this hand-wringing about Fred dropping out - Fred Thompson was McCain's twin anyway. He never talked about withdrawing from the UN or killing all of the foreign aid and corporate subsidies like Paul has.
I am sorry, but opposing Paul is a matter of national survival. In any case, his GOP campaign is toast.
Actually he had lymphoma, as I recall, for which the early treatments are not insignificant, but certainly not debilitating. He looked older at the time he entered the race because he lost 20 pounds at his doctors recommendation. When heavy guys lose weight, they look older. That's just the way it is.
But I agree with the others that if you really believe this way, it doesn't speak well of you. Washington and Lincoln were hardly male super-models.
Boy, you said it, right there.
Are you talking about the same Mitt Romney that’s running for president? Because the one I know has been pro-life for at least a month now and has been appointing ‘strict constructionist’ judges for almost 48 whole hours now.
I don’t know what kind of anti-Mormon bigotry that drives you not to trust Mitt Romney, but you better stop, because if you don’t vote for Mitt, the terrorists will win.
Oh, and by the way, a little president named Ronald Reagan appointed some lousy judges, so Mitt Romney would be just like Reagan.
All of this ‘record analyzing’ is just because Hillary’s afraid to run against a candidate who is prettier than she is. He’s so dreamy...
FRED Thompson will appoint conservative judges to the Supreme Court in the mold of
John Roberts
Antonin Scalia
Joseph Alito
Clarence Thomas.
We still need Thompson as PRESIDENT! (Remember brokered convention — comprimise candidate???? It will be Fred Thompson!)
You missed the hidden sarcasm tag...
I absolutely agree with that statement! I voted for Fred!
Excuse me, but you have confused Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson. While both are attractive to women who prefer men to manequins and wax dummies, Rudy had prostate cancer - and looks damn good, too.
Maybe some would prefer we nominate Orlando Bloom or some other pretty face with no character, but I prefer a Tall Man who looks like he earned the right to be called a Man. More importantly, what I want for a president is someone who understands the Constitution and can direct the Executive branch of the federal government appropriately.
Otherwise, I’d have to vote for Joan Edwards (sic), ‘cause he has the best hair.
And Mitt has great hair!
Great comments on Romney. Anyone who can support any of these clowns with enthusiasm isn’t balanced.
When I registered to vote here in Alaska in 2005, I changed my affiliation from Republican to Independent. I guess after 15 years of what passes for Republican in most of Minnesota, I wasn't sure I wanted more of the same.
No, we Conservatives need to TAKE BACK OUR PARTY! Tighten the money in the party and things will change rather quickly. We need folks that are willing to step up to the plate and use their God given talent to help bring our beliefs and values back to within the Republican Party. After all it is OUR party that we have let drift away. LET’S ALL UNITE AND BRING IT BACK.
Good article....i am adrift at this point in time.....i look to Mitt with dull, lifeless eyes.
From this one strictly visceral female point of view, Romney makes my hair stand on end. If I didn't know who he was but met him casually or in business, I'd quietly decline any further relation. I like a handsome man as much as the next gal. But "handsome" comes from within. Romney just makes me want to turn around and head in the opposite direction.
Thompson, on the other hand, would be a guy who got more handsome the better you got to know him. What a great, interesting mind. I am severely disappointed, though. I'm just wondering what the hell got into him. I believe he would have won had he stayed in the race. I am shaking my head in complete disgust at this whole train wreck.
