unequipped for instrument flight

It's virtually certain that his plane was equipped for instrument flight. He probably even had an autopilot that he could have just turned on, that would have kept him right-side up. But he probably never even experimented with the thing. He was a very low time pilot and it's pretty obvious he didn't know how to use his instruments.

That may all be true. But then John McCain is old, experienced, and has no common sense. The Obama I hear speaking now is not the same man who wrote “Dreams from My Father” in 1995. I still don’t want to vote for him, but hopefully if we get stuck with him he won’t be the disaster that book would seem to imply.

I think you'll find that work of JFK's was actually written, either by him or a ghostwriter paid by his father, to paper over the latter's well-known fondness for genocidal dictators - a trait obviously shared by his grandson & namesake (and Mrs Schlossberg's cousin).

You are certainly correct! My bad. Thanks for pulling me up short on that one. My mind got off the beaten path when I was thinking of him as not being rated and therefore probably didn’t make sure he had everything needed to fly IFR legally.

You’re also very correct about the autopilot. Too bad one of his instructors hadn’t shown him how easy it is to engage the autopilot when you find yourself in conditions that you aren’t trained for. Nothing like letting the autopilot do the flying while you try to figure out how you’re going to get yourself out the mess you’re in.

I have flown that model Saratoga and the autopilot was not all that great, but certainly enough to keep you in level flight and call for help. Hopefully someone would have at least told him how to use the heading bug to make a 180 out of there.

What an absolutely preventable accident. How sad for everyone involved.

None of my instructors ever showed me how to use an autopilot. (In some ways similarly, I never used a headset when I flew with my instrument instructor. It really made me much better at managing things when I was on my own, I think, because it was as if I had a whole extra hand.) As soon as I got my private though, I started experimenting and reading, and experimenting again. I really didn't use them all that much as I preferred to do the flying myself.

After it happened, I asked him, “why?” He knew him, and his father, and said that both JFKs had a death wish. God granted BOTH of them their wish.

[Barrack Hussein Obama’s record in the Illinois senate:]

- Opposed the Defense of Marriage Act; would work to repeal it in the U.S. Senate; would not vote for any legislation that would restrict the ability of gays and lesbians to marry.
- Opposed the Born Alive Infant Protection Act four times in Illinois. A similar bill passed the U.S. Senate 98-0. The Born Alive bill would have prohibited a baby from being born alive but left to die according to the mother’s wishes. Obama inexplicably opposed this bill not once, twice, or three times, but four times.
- Obama took almost $90,000 in bundled contributions from the Council for a Livable World. The council is a well-known anti-defense organization.
- Obama puts rigid ideology before what’s best for the people of Illinois, and presumably he would do that as President as well. He has on several occasions made public his opposition to the NAFTA trade agreement and his belief that it must be negotiated. All the while thanks to NAFTA, Illinois exports $1.3 billion in agricultural goods to Canada.
- Obama refused to vote for a bill in the Illinois State Senate that would have increased penalties for drug traffickers.
- Obama voted against a bill that would have delivered the death penalty to gang members who murder first responders.
- Finally, just in case you thought it couldn’t get any worse, Obama was the only member of the Illinois State Senate to vote against a bill that prohibited early release for sexual predators.

While JFK himself never got caught being out in public with his father’s appeasement BS, “Why England Slept” can be seen largely as an attempt to exonerate dear old dad by blaming everybody else for the fact that the Nazis swallowed up most of Europe, especially the English themselves - which I’ve always thought was a bit cheeky, since it was published as Nazi bombs were raining down all over England.
