In May 2001, members of a Northwest group used arson to advance its agenda.
They set fire to the Center for Urban Horticulture at the University of Washington because they believed one of the researchers was genetically engineering poplar trees. He wasn't.
The arsonists destroyed plants and the research of several people other than the man whose work they targeted. None of their goals was served by the violence.
"Misguided" is the word, I believe. I'd even call them ecoterrorists.
The crime is back in the news because a woman accused of acting as a lookout for the Earth Liberation Front is scheduled to go on trial next month.
The professor whose work the group feared, Toby Bradshaw, said he is still doing the same line of basic research he's pursued for the past decade, trying to understand "the genetic mechanisms by which organisms adapt to their environments."
He does hybrid breeding, but not genetic engineering, no Frankenplants.
Bradshaw said he'll testify at the trial.
The damaged building, Merrill Hall, has been rebuilt, bigger and better. This week is the third anniversary of its rededication.
Researchers there work to preserve endangered plants and restore degraded landscapes, among other things. It's a building full of nature lovers.
Attacking it was senseless, but does trying to scare people into submission ever make sense? I don't think so. It might seem to work in the short term, but in the end it's self-destructive.

A dozen of them entered pleas, four fled and one committed suicide after being taken into custody.
The last one, the woman accused of being a lookout, Briana Waters, was a student at The Evergreen State College in 2001 and denies participating. Now she's a 32-year-old violin teacher in Berkeley, Calif., and a mom.

Ecoterrorist Ping!
Set them on fire, its only fair.
“Misguided”, hell.
They are ultra-left-wing terrorists and need to be named as such in the MSM....
Hahahahahahahahahahaha, like THAT is ever going to happen. Sometimes I crack myself up.
One committed suicide after being arrested, eh?
Well, at least HE did his part to reduce global warming, etc.
LOL! Misguided is a real stretch but remember this guy writes for The Seattle Times, I’m surprised he went that far.
But all that carbon from the decomposing body!
Rachel Corrie, Gaza terrorist protector and CAT Challenger, now six feet under, was a student at The Evergreen State College too. Especial psycho water must be served on campus.
Evergreen is mainly moonbats, students and professors.
Yes, she’s a mom now but she won’t have much input with her daughter? (I believe), if she’s found guilty she’s facing a 35 year mandatory sentence.
Two of her loony cohorts are testifying against her, it looks like she’s going down.
Thanks for the ping.
Nice that she can face the music.
And even if he was this is a stupid reason to burn a place down. Of course, off hand, I can think of few smart reasons to burn a building down.
While I feel that they should toss her in jail and toss the key away, I fully anticipate that one of the liberal judges around here will say that now she is a mom, and teaches children music, so she is no longer a threat to the community. It was just a youthful indiscretion (NOT!)
During the hearing, Kolar received a suggested sentence of 57 years in federal prison despite facing a mandatory life sentence, Phillabaum, 35 years. Both Kolar and Phillabaum were released without bail following their pleas. On January 28 (29?), 2007, Phillabaum reported to a federal facility to begin voluntarily serving her sentence, but formal sentencing for both is unlikely to occur until after Briana Waters' trial. Both Phillabaum and Kolar are expected to testify against Waters and have been provided significant reductions in their recommended sentences as a result of extensive cooperation with the federal government.
I like that! A violin teacher having to face the music.
LOL!
It's time for me to loosen up, I've been taking this much too seriously. That went right over my head.
The trial date has been moved a number of times so far. Poor Briana has a website set up (supportbriana.org) where she begs for money and shows pictures of her child (who I honestly feel bad for).
Waters was offered a decent deal by the government, but decided to play hardball. I hope she gets the maximum sentence. These ecoterrorists need to be held accountable.
