Brokaw: My Most Conservative Friend Might Vote for Hillary
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 01/23/2008 6:25:59 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

Tom Brokaw says his most conservative friend has told him he might vote for Hillary Clinton. I for one believe the former NBC News anchor. Hillary supporters might indeed constitute the rightward fringe of his friend set.

The revelation occured on today's Morning Joe.

That’s like saying Kim Jong Il is acceptable, because we know who to blame when South Koreans starve.

Just another lie. He has no conservative friends. An acquaintance maybe but no friends.

Blue dog Democrats call themselves conservative but they are far from it.

Considering everyone he hangs with is just to the left of Mao, that’s hardly surprising.

Brojaw doesn’t know any conservatives.

Don't be too sure. Isn't Brokaw the "celebrity" Montana "rancher" whose next door neighbor runs hunting parties?

He may have crossed paths before with the neighbor during the lawsuit to ban hunting within twenty miles of the Brokaw/Neighbor property line.

My guess is that the neighbor probably isn't a liberal.

There is not one conservative on planet earth that would EVER vote for Hillary Clinton.

Heck, there are many dims who won't vote for her. I know one gal who had the "No / W" sticker on her car last election and she now has a Ron Paul bumper sticker. Go figure.

Like I said, I'm not sure I buy it. I think the big flaw in the logic is the assumption that the socialism from either McCain or Hillary will be seen as bad. That would require an informed electorate. There would in effect be no "blame" to associate with anyone.

You'd have thought that 8 years of the SinkMeister would have already accomplished that but obviously not so. And the stellar performance of the Dem congress doesn't seem to matter either.

My hope is that Hillary goes down in very public flames, crushed by the memory of the eight year travesty that was the Clinton administration but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

I read Gramsci in Grad School. He’s very influential in Lit Crit circles.

Frighteningly, my husband is hearing this frequently from many people who’ve typically voted R in the past.

It’s like there’s something in the water, fercryingoutloud.

You are absolutely right Arrowhead1952. I actually do have several “liberal” friends (I don’t think they are as liberal as they claim to be) that tell me Hillary is the one candidate that they WILL NOT vote for. I take them at their word. I have even offered to provide “Hillary ‘08” stickers (in a slightly mocking way) for some that had Kerry/Edward stickers on their cars/trucks and they refused.

That’s because Tom Brokaw’s most conservative friend is a socialist. The communist’s he knows are is moderate friends.

I read Gramsci's Il Principo Nuovo as an undergrad, mostly because at that time I was a fan of White House Communications Director Pat Buchanan and his Crossfire appearances, and Buchanan spoke highly of columnist Sam Francis, who in turn referenced Gramsci a number of times.

Gramsci is the perfect Communist theoretician for the well-off artsy urban Westerner.

Despite his fans, he was really a very brilliant guy - he was to Western culture what Stalin was to kulaks: a malevolent genius.

He is perfect for Lit Crit, I would imagine, for two reasons: (1) so much of his writing deals with cultural politics rather than dry economics and (2) most of his writing is in code, since the bulk of his most significant work was written from a Fascist prison cell and he had to dodge the prison censor, and that code provides semiologists much fun with polysemy.

Out of all the leftist cultural theoreticians I've read, I have to say the most interesting have been Gramsci and Blanchot.

Gramsci remains popular among what would be called the "extreme right" in Europe - folks like Alain de Benoist, Koenradd Logghe, etc. These people consider themselves to be an "anti-bourgeois" right.

And de Benoist and Gramsci are also popular touchpoints with the group of writers associated with Chronicles magazine: Paul Gottfried, Thomas Fleming, Lew Rockwell.

Brokaw: My Most Conservative Friend

Is Tom Brokaw's "conservative friend" any relation to Stephen Colbert's "black friend"?
