Back in March of 07 at the CPAC convention in DC several former Fred Thompson Congressional staffers told me Fred Thompson was thinking about a run. Some of his Tennessee cronies had been talking him up too.
I reported first that he was eyeing a White House bid. At the time several insiders told me OFF THE RECORD that it was largely a trial ballon to guage his popularity and float his name as a possible vice presidential nominee. I was sworn to silence.

Thompson would make a great VP candidate (I suggested the same months ago).
He would instantly make any Republican ticket much more credible to conservatives.
That being said, I am not sure what he would bring to the dance...perhaps he can help in the South for a candidate like McCain or Romney. McCain and Fred both suffer from appearing “old” which would probably not be good for a ticket.
Hey, take this is as one or some of the following 3 things:
1. Good for Republicans (helps make the ticket more conservative and keeps an intelligent conservative near power)
2. Explains his disaster of a campaign.
3. A complete lie and misreporting.
I’ll take options 1 & 2.
I won’t vote for McCain no matter who he choses as VP.

Looked up Cameron. In 2000, his wife worked with Bush campaign. Still pretty sure she works for Clinton campaign now.
Back during Carl’s days with WMUR-TV in Manchester, NH he was good in his political reporting. Seems to me Fox News has tied his hands.
If McCain is the nominee... I’m staying home...

Ah, Carl Cameron.
He’d be a great Washington-insider, right-hand man for Romney (or Rudy) coming in as chief executives from outside the beltway. And he’d probably bolster either of them in the South, where they’d have to win to win.
As others have noted, he doesn’t really work (who does!) on a McCain ticket.
I’m just not sure how Rudy would govern... Would he be good on economic and defense issues, but then disappoint on several other conservative causes... say illegal immigration for example??? I don’t know. But on this front I’ve had enough of Bush... I don’t want another...
Carl has had it in for Fred since the begining. He’s an ass.
Before McCain gets to choose a VP, first he needs to get himself nominated.
I don’t KNOW what Fred will do. I do know that he and McCain were personal friends. I can understand that. After all, I have a number of friends whom I like but whom I would never vote for for public office.
I think it’s clear that if Fred were to endorse McCain—and I say, “IF”—very few of his supporters would go along with it. It would be a meaningless endorsement.
It’s like when Tancredo dropped out and endorsed Romney. At the time, it really did Romney no good at all, because it just didn’t make sense to Tancredo’s supporters. Even some of Tancredo’s campaign staff immediately endorsed other candidates.
IF this (Carl's report) is true, then the Thompson campaign was by design a disjointed effort Problem is that it has become almost impossible to tell who tells the truth these days.

I sense a little bit of editing on Carl’s part. I have no doubt that Tennessee friends asked him to consider a run...and that perhaps Thompson first thought of VP (let’s face it..he probably thought he wouldn’t be electable as Pres). But I have to believe after reading what Thompson has written and seeing him in the debates that he recognized that he was truly the only conservative in the race. I don’t think he would have put his wife and kids in the position of going for president if he ultimately didn’t want it.
At least he focused the issues on conservative principles. Without Fred in the race, those issues would never have been highlighted! Though I’m disappointed he is out, I do hope that he is an option for VP...but not McCain.

Given that Rich Galen was on radio shopping Fred as a VP candidate before he even formally dropped out, this rings somewhat true.
Carl Cameron knows how to smile??? You could have fooled me with his suckingd-a-sour-lemon emeanor while covering Republicans.
