Fredheads, It's Time to Support Mitt
The Jawa Report ^ | January 22, 2008 05:18 PM | Dr. Rusty Shackleford

Posted on 01/22/2008 3:22:24 PM PST by Checkers

Dear fellow Fredheads,

It's time to support Mitt Romney. Can Mitt win in a general election? I don't know. Certainly he has always had a better chance than Fred. And if the opposition is Hillary Clinton, then maybe.

McCain can beat Hillary. But McCain is, well, McCain.

To be honest, I'm not as down on McCain as most of my fellow Jawas and you, the readers. But that's just because I've been a one-issue guy since right around, oh, let me see, I think the date was 9/11/2001.

But still, McCain doesn't get that the border is tied in with our national security.

Mitt does. And he seems to get the war on political Islam.

Sure, Rudy also seems to get both, but it's probably too little too late for him.

I'm hearing some oddball theory that a lot of Fredheads are natural Huckabee supporters. That's insane. Like, certifiably insane.

It's built on the presumption that the evangelical supporters of Thompson are in the same boat as the evangelical supporters of Huckabee. I got news for Tom Edsell: they aint the same animal. Sure, they may have the same funny accent, and so I'm guessing that to an outsider like Edsell the presumption is that they must be the same species. But they're not.

This is the best treasure trove of Mitt Romney record, issues positions, quotes, etc. right here on FR:

http://www.freerepublic.com/~UnmarkedPackage/

On Judges:

Governor Romney: “I think the justices that President Bush has appointed are exactly spot-on. I think Justice Roberts and Justice Alito are exactly the kind of justices America needs. They’re people who believe that the Constitution is what they’re to follow, not what they’re to depart from; people who do not believe that legislation from the bench is the responsibility or authority of being on the bench. I respect legal scholars of all backgrounds, but those who are going to be on the bench, if I were lucky enough to appoint them, would be people who believe their job is to follow the law and follow the Constitution.”
(Robert B. Bluey, “Romney on Judges: Follow Bush’s Lead,” RedState Blog, 2/02/2007)

Governor Romney: “There’s a lot more to being pro-life beyond appointing conservative justices. That, I will do. I like (Supreme Court Chief Justice John) Roberts and (Justice Samuel) Alito, I like (Justice Clarence) Thomas and (Justice Antonin) Scalia. I like that kind of thinking on the bench, and that’s the kind of justice I will appoint. You also have decisions as an administration on things like abstinence education, on the morning-after pill, on teaching kids to wait before they have babies, on insisting on parental responsibility for a father who has an out-of-wedlock child. These policies are also important, and will become a major part of my effort to encourage a culture of life rather than the culture of death.”
(Jonathan Martin, “Romney jabs Giuliani on abortion,” Politico.com, 4/25/2007)

Governor Romney: “As President, I intend to nominate judges who respect the separation of powers, are committed to judicial restraint, and have a genuine appreciation of the text, structure, and history of our Constitution. The judges I nominate will recognize, as I do, that as Justice Scalia once said, the Court ought not take the field as some kind of ‘junior-varsity Congress.’ That would wrongly displace the first-string legislature, drawn from our deepest pool of talent – ‘we, the people.’”
(Romney for President, “Governor Mitt Romney On The Beginning Of The U.S. Supreme Court Term,” Press Release, 10/01/2007)

Good reminder... I hope those on this thread that are once again playing the “he is not conservative enough card” remember your choice is not between Mitt and Hunter, nor Mitt and Fred, but between Mitt and Hillary or Obama. I am heading back to Iraq again this summer—willingly—and I hope come 20 Jan 2009 I won’t find that all those who died did not do so in vain because we elected a Dem to the Presidency.

I’m not going to vote for Mitt just because he’s not McCain. He’s going to have to convence me that he is the best man left. That’s not a high bar, but so far I don’t think he’s made it.

He is the least likely one to win in the general election IMO, so he has to prove that he isn’t a wolf in sheep’s skin. Both Rudy and McCain say “What you see is what you get.” Mitt says, “Don’t look at what I used to be; look at what I say.” I’m not buying it.

Sorry, kind of an odd word to use, I admit. I consider campaign platforms to be promises, “vows” that the candidate takes as to what they will do as President.

If I vote for someone who promises to take actions I oppose, I either have to resolve to oppose the person I just elected, or pray that they will break their vows.

I’d rather vote for a candidate who promises to do what I want, than one who promises to do what I don’t want.

These sins of Mitt's do not look as bad to me as the Mavorick's Keating 5; MIAs screwed and left behind for political reasons; loss of free speech; open borders and citizenship for 20 mil lawbreakers; closing Gitmo(cause it doesn't look to the rest of the world who are taking our aid)and bringing them to a prison near you and me, lawyered up like any civilian perp; lip svc. to prolife but filing a brief against prolife activities in a northern state(MN,WI?)and coming soon---ta da! McCain-Leiberman energy bill guaranteed to up your utility rate in the name of lowering global warming.

And last but not least, I am voting for Mitt to stick my finger in the media's eye. We have let them hound the best man out and they think they can push McCain in.

Some are misconstruing Mitt Romney’s position, that he supports Congressional mandates because that is the approach used in Massachusetts. He does not. He has been explicit in proposing a federalist approach that let’s states purspue reform and the federal govt loosens regulations in ways to allow better market-oriented reforms to go forward.

The Romney Vision: Health Care Reform Goals

• First, Instituting Reforms That Make Private Health Insurance Affordable. More Americans need access to quality, private health insurance.

• Second, Providing Access To Quality Health Insurance For Every American.

• Third, Enhancing The Portability Of Private Health Insurance.

• Finally, Slowing The Rate Of Inflation In Health Care Spending.

Linking Goals With Action Steps: The Federalist Approach

Governor Romney’s Approach To Health Care Reform Is One That Values The States As Laboratories Of Innovation And Beacons Of Creativity.

The Romney Plan: Six Action Steps

• Step 1: Establish Federal Incentives To Deregulate And Reform State Health Insurance Markets So Market Forces Can Work.

• Step 2: Redirect Federal Spending On “Free Care” To Help The Low-Income Uninsured Purchase Private Insurance.

• Step 3: Institute Health Savings Account (HSA) Enhancements And The Full Deductibility Of Qualified Medical Expenses.

• Step 4: Promote Innovation In Medicaid.

• Step 5: Implement Medical Liability Reform.

• Step 6: Bring Market Dynamics And Modern Technology To Health Care.

Sorry can’t do it. Anyone who still believes in mandates, civil marriage... does not believe in conservative principles. Mitt is one of the reasons why I supported Fred in the first place, Mitt doesn’t get it.

"Yeah...right...but he changed every philosophical stance he ever had just as he entered his bid for the Presidency. "

No he didnt. Not at all. Mitt Romney has been a consistent protaxcuts fiscal conservative, prowelfare reform and tough on immigration law-and-order and strong-military conservative since his first run for office in 1994. He only changed his position on abortion.

He is the best man left, and when I vote for him it will be FOR him and not a lesser-of-two-RINOs choice. This is what Mitt Romney ran on in 1994. see below. This "dont look at what I used to be" is bogus and you are right to look at his record. But there's been a lot of exaggerations of how much Mitt has changed. He has been a consistent fiscal and law-and-order conservative his whole political career. ... please, look at what Mitt Romney used to be, here, and if you like 80% of it, maybe he is enough of an improvement over Proamnesty-antiBushtaxcuts-proCO2caps-CFR-RINO John McCain to be your candidate.

You just lost credibility, and thus any chance of swaying conservatives with this post. If you can denigrate one of few people actually strong enough, with enough character to actually do something other than complain, How can we take your word on Romney.

My election choice remains the same and I am done with this thread. No need to respond.

My two favorites are out of the race and I will vote for the party’s nominee unless it it Rudy. For all of Huckabee’s faults, he is my next choice. McCain is certifiable and I would choose Mitt after Huckabee.

Mitt Romney is for mandates on health care, and the ongoing health care plan in Massachusetts is proof of this! Also, while Mitt has done some good things while Governor of Massachusetts, including not raising taxes, has has also done plenty of bad things like fail to increase “Republicanism” throughout Massachusetts while also making fun of Massachusetts politics whenever he campaigned outside of Massachusetts. People in Massachusetts elected Mitt Romney in 2002 to truly become a full-time Governor of Massachusetts for the next four years and not so Mitt could be the Governor of Massachusetts for just two years “and some change” and then have Mitt start campaigning all over the U.S.! Instead of just staying put in Massachusetts, Mitt decided to help other Republicans while, at the same time, making people in Massachusetts angry at him for not being a full-time Governor while also making fun of Massachusetts politics. Mitt “all of a sudden” changed his positions on some issues so that he would appeal more to the conservative base, and only the most loyal of Romney supporters will still truly continue to deny this while also providing lists on FR that also spin things Mitt’s way. BTW, how is the Massachusetts Republican Party truly better now overall ever since Mitt is no longer its Governor? Mitt is just another slick car salesman.

I’m glad your husband is recovered and doing well.

I don’t think you followed the (short) thread of what I was responding to. A poster was saying Romney’s plan to have everyone buy insurance was against freedom and FREEpers should realize that. I was taking the other side, that in the end we all pay for those getting free care because of higher hospital costs passed onto those with insurance and copays. So, a plan where everyone is covered (somehow, details will be agonizing, I know) will actually drive costs down.

I personally think we need to get rid of insurance companies. Costs have only excalated to where the average working person cannot afford even a doctor’s visit without insurance - only after insurance existed. Before that, doctors didn’t make outrageous amounts of money and people could afford to go to them. Hospitals didn’t charge $5 for one tylenol! Health care, like illegal aliens and everything else, has gotten so out of control by TPTB turning a blind eye.

Dear fellow Fredheads, It's time to support Mitt Romney

Dear Romniacs, McCainiacs, Huckabeesters and Rudy-bots.

Please send me drugs. Serious pharm-quality drugs. Zoloft. Lexapro. Send some St. John's wort capsules as well for good measure. If this is what the GOP has been reduced to - if the party is this friggin' brain dead to have this gimpy-assed stable as the remaining standard bearers - well, we're hosed. There is no other way to describe it.
