M.L. King ally says U.S. holiday an insult

DALLAS, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- A Dallas minister who marched with civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., said Monday's birthday observance holiday is an insult to his legacy.

The Rev. Peter Johnson, 62, director of the Texas operations for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, told The Dallas Morning News the holiday should be on April 4, the anniversary of the date King was assassinated.

"We have ignored the essence of his life and the horror of his death," said Johnson. "We've allowed white America to escape the guilt of his assassination and we've allowed black America to drift back into a coma."

Johnson said King is considered a martyr by many but said, if he were alive, he would be considered an agitator by many people, the newspaper said.

"We remember him with parades and galas and banquets, things that are really irrelevant and silly regarding Dr. King's legacy," he said. "If we really want to honor Dr. King, we should do something about people who live under bridges. That would be a great tribute."

I don't think there will ever be enough "white guilt" for people like this guy.

If he really was a Christian (as the Rev. before his name reads) - then he would be focused on saving souls for Jesus Christ.

Mr. Johnson can STFU ... he clearly has nothing useful to say.

But if there was no holiday we would all be racists anyway.

Interestingly, our home office is in WI where school is in session all day today.

Give it time. The Libs are into incrementalism. First, you make the birthday holiday. Then you make the death day a holiday. Then you make every day from January 15 thru April 4 a holiday. Then you get paid time off for all union workers in America. Then you work on April 5 thru January 14.

As a white person, I do not feel any guilt for MLK’s death. I did not shoot him. No member of my family would have shot him or advocated shooting him.

He was a fine man. This Rev is out of bounds.

I would say it is absurd to blame all white people for MLK’s death. Kind of sounds racist.

Despite all the hype....MLK was not a saint. Do a Google search and you’ll be very unimpressed.

I completely agree.

Let's just get rid of it so we don't have to watch and listen to yet another replay of all the same b*llsh*t again next year.

What a convoluted position this person has taken.

Creating a national holiday celebrating the day that a great man was assassinated.

"We've allowed white America to escape the guilt of his assassination...

"White America" did not assassinate Dr. King, though a white American did. Rev. Johnson, you have revealed yourself by your hateful comment to be a shameless racist. Indeed, your comment effectually murders white Americans by its hatred, as Jesus made clear about such comments.

One wonders, sir, whether a real Christian could make such a comment at all. Just what or Whom do you "Revere"? Dr. King would not approve, nor does Jesus.
