Headaches linked to mobile phones

Last Updated: 1:02am GMT 21/01/2008

Radiation from mobile phones damages sleep and causes headaches, according to a study by telephone makers.

People using a handset before going to bed take longer to reach deeper stages of sleep and spend less time in them, researchers found.

This gives their bodies less time to repair wear and tear during the day, and gives them headaches.

advertisementThe findings are particularly alarming for children and teenagers, most of whom, surveys suggest, use their phones late at night.

The young need plenty of sleep and failure to get enough can lead to depression and poor academic achievement.

The scientists concluded: "The study indicates that during laboratory exposure to 884 MHz wireless signals, components of sleep, believed to be important for recovery from daily wear and tear, are adversely affected.

"Moreover, participants that otherwise have no self-reported symptoms related to mobile phone use appear to have more headaches during actual radio frequency exposure."

The research, funded by the Mobile Manufacturers Forum, which represents the main handset companies, has caused serious concern among sleep experts.

The study, involving 35 men and 36 women aged between 18 and 45, was carried out by scientists from Uppsala University in Sweden and Karolinska Institute and Wayne State University in Michigan, USA.

Be glad that I didn’t include a pun.

I keep seeing that half-android guy who was Lando Calrissian’s major domo in those bluetooth wearers.

I still think there’s a mad scientist in a secret control room somewhere about to throw a switch and turn all phone wearers into mindless zombies...

Seventy-one people does not sound like a sufficient test population to me either.

I guess they gave up the brain cancer scare and are now aiming lower.

Was it the University of Uppsala that also gave us the powerline cancer study twenty years ago?

If this is true, then my son should be dead. He spends hours on his cell phone with his girls friend.

I was on the train today from NYC to DC and for the first hour until we got to Trenton was infuriating. All because of a totally obnoxious woman across the aisle who felt the need to call everyone she knows and proceed to scream into the phone about how she would be in Trenton soon, and the names of each of the stops on the way, and how amazing it was that she was able to talk to them while she was on the train, etc. As if this wasn’t bad enough, she felt the need to have the volume of her cell phone up loud enough so that everyone within 50 feet could her every single word of the people she was talking to. I’m grateful she wasn’t on the train for the whole three hours to DC.

My mother in law calls before bed. Splains everything.

Totally off topic. With regard to your tagline:

Yes, and they depend on their buds in the NEA and AFT to insure that everyone is brought up dumb.

A problem that is getting exponentially worse as time goes on.

People who talk endlessly on their cell phones are real...wait, this is a family friendly forum.

Never mind.

I didn’t realize someone had been put in charge of how much talking other people should do. It’s you? I didn’t know that.

Bingo! That’s less than .01% of the population. How valid could it be?

The shouting is something that the person doesn't realize he or she is doing. It's like those who are using a radio with earphones and talk loud enough to hear themselves without realizing they are shouting.

That being said, it amazes me how concerned people seem to be about other people's phone habits.

It’s not a study. It’s anecdotes.

Could not agree more. It's amazing to cellphoneless me that "normal" people go through some sort of transformation when speaking into a cell phone. Suddenly they think the person on the other end of the line is deaf so they have to yell. If they're driving they feel the need to drop their speed by at least 20% so they can concentrate on the call.

Worst of all is "push to talk." With that you get to hear both sides of the conversation. I was in the grocery the other day and a Mom was having a push to talk conversation with her daughter. And they were discussing stuff that should not be shared with the world. Disgusting.

Sorry I offended you. Sounds like you’re one of those I mentioned, screaming your conversation for the entire mall, restaurant or doctor’s office to hear. Or maybe too rude to hang up when the cashier is checking you out, making others in line delayed while the cashier waits for you to carry on your conversation instead of paying her or unpacking your cart promptly? Or if you’re driving so slow that you’re tying up traffic for miles?

Most people I see on phones are just increfibly selfish, and it is they who draw attention by their incredibly boorish behavior, speaking as if their conversation has no impact on others.

Yes, that’s what I used to think. Or that they must be in the medical profession, carrying on conversations of an emergency nature. But I guess we know better these days.

That’s one of the worst cases, hearing both sides of a conversation that should be private in nature. I find myself walking away because I feel like I am the one intruding on their privacy!

I’ve heard people bring up the fact that while many people are against the Bush administration’s surveillance tactics regarding phone conversations, people in our country also carry on private conversations in public for all the world to hear! If we could just catch an alQaeda guy in a mall on a cell phone, we’d be all set!

I just re-read my response to you, and it sounded accusatory in nature. That was not my intent. But maybe I just live in an area in which the people practice extremely rude behavior when using their phones, as in the cases I mentioned, and I’m just fed up, as are some of the others who have posted under this topic.

What does give me a headache ... females, usually soccer mom types, driving two ton SUV’s while chattering away on a cellphone. One of them nearly took off the left front fender of my well maintained ‘85 Benz recently while making a left hand turn at a traffic light. Completely clueless.

That would be highly presumptuous of you. I generally use the self checkout...in and out in two minutes-phone or not. I go out of my way to speak quietly when I use my phone in public, which I have every right to do. However, when I observe someone who is being loud, I smile at their silliness and go about my business, as should you.
