Fred Thompson's distant third in last night's South Carolina primary, has me re-thinking my support. I say this with disappointment, " I don't think Fred can win the nomination". Part of me wants to support him to the bitter end. Another part feels that in doing so I may only be helping McCain or Huckabee; my least 2 favorite candidates. I live in a Super Tuesday state, and my vote may actually matter this cycle, so I want to use it wisely. The only other candidates who seems like they can stop McCain or Huckabee is Romney or Rudy. If McCain wins in Florida, then he's in good shape to be the nominee. Polling analysis, done before Nevada and South Carolina primary; has him in the lead in Florida at around 23% about a 2 point lead over Rudy whose at 21-22%. Romney is around 18%, Hucakabee 15%, Fred 7%, and Paul 5%. Florida is a winner take all state, so whoever wins will have solid delegate count. Romney has the most delegate at this point, counts vary from source to source, but I put him at 72 to McCain's 38. So a win from Romney in Florida would give him a solid lead going into Super Tuesday. A win by Rudy would knock McCain into 3rd in the delegate count. So my quandry is do I continue to support Fred, or put my support behind a candidate who has a better chance of stopping McCain. In the end I will vote for the GOP nominee regardless. This is only because the troops are deployed, and they don't deserve a Commander-In-Chief from the party that tried to lose the war for them. So the primary is where my vote counts the most, and I want to put the "best man possible" for the job on the ticket. Unfortunately it dosen't look like the "best man" for the job will be at the top of that ticket, but there's is another spot on that ticket. Hey it might be wishful thinking, but what's a Fredhead to do??

Rethink what? Ask yourself if the morons who have been dividing up the different states so far are really conservatives and republicans. Ask yourself if the morons who bought into their line of crap are really conservatives or republicans or are they smarter than you about who the best republican candidate should be. Fred should stick with it at least until we know whether anyone is a complete lock at the convention. I would like to see a convention opened up to debate as to who will be the final candidate. It will be interesting to see how committed the GOP really is to selecting a candidate they know has a chance of pounding the democrats and not just one who will play nice and spew platitudes to the american public. Although I will certainly vote for ANY GOP candidate over ANY democrat living or dead in order to prevent the rats from gaining power I certainly don’t want another RINO like GWB or a non-starter like Dole.

The polling and the media are very successfully shaping the results because too many republicans have turned off the parts of their brains that perform critical thinking tasks. Terry Anderson of The Terry Anderson Show in L.A. says every week on his show that “The lesser of two evils [McCain] is still evil!”, and he’s right. At some point, conservatives and Republicans in general need to stop voting out of desperation.

Romney would not pick Thompson for a couple of reasons. First, he looks old and tired. Second, he didn’t prove he could win any state. He might not even be able to guarantee Romney TN, which does not have many electorates. Most importantly, Thompson probably wouldn’t help Roomney in the South. If Romney wants to get conservatives behind him, instead of going with Mark Sanford (who he’s touted) whose state just went for McCain, Romney would be better served by selecting a really TOUGH on the Invasion Southern Governor like Gov. Matt Blunt of Missouri. He’s young and tough as nails and will bring anti-Invasion conservatives in, some of whom are currently backing Ron Paul. Some conservatives are eyeing Gov. Pawlenty of Minnesota who has gotten tough on illegals, but he’s from a Northern state and wouldn’t help Romney in the South. There are certainly more conservative Governors than Sanford!

Keep supporting Fred, by sending (small, at least) donations to his campaign. That will let him know we like his ideals. It will also inform other Americans that we think highly of Fred.

People are spreading rumors that Fred is campaigning to help McCain and are saying that Fred will throw his support to McCain when he drops out.

All the more reason to

Help keep Fred a viable candidate

We wouldn't want him to throw his support to McCain, now, would we?

If Fred stays in, I'm staying with him. He's the one saying what I believe--federalism, conservative principles--all across the board. I want to be able to vote for him here in Missouri in our primary.

Come November, I do not want to have to hold my nose and vote for McCain or Huck. I will never vote for Rudy the pro-abort. I might be persuaded to vote for Mitt, if he can convince of his conversion on the abortion issue.

I’ve been disappointed in Bush, also. I worked very hard to help him defeat Gore, then to help him to defeat Kerry, and I don’t regret doing either. I think the country would be even worse off if Gore or Kerry had become president. Think what kind of Supreme Court we would have now if either of them had won, for one thing.

I still feel we need to keep either Hillary or Obama from winning the presidency, and I think Romney is the man who can beat them.

No Boyo, here starthet the lesson. A political foe who is on your side 5% of the time is still your foe no matter if he happens to wear the "correct" party label.

No Conservative should ever consider voting for McCain. We worry the others will betray us. We know McCain will betray us. Look at his record for the last 8 years? Been nothing but betrayal and obstruction.

With any of the other canidates we have a seat at the table. We know John McCain will never listen to us on anything.

With McCain Conservatives would get maybe 10%. That would not be worth the enormous long term damage McCain would do to both the GOP and the Conservative Movement. With a McCain Administration we would have a mislabeled “Conservative” Administration pushing Democrat Party polices while the GOP took all the political fall out of the consequences of those disastrous decisions.

Just what could Conservatives expect to get from a McCain Administration? Based on McCain’s record for the last 8 years, we could expect to get tough talk on foreign policy and spending with no real action on any issue.

Do people forget the Democrats trying to get McCain to flip party’s in Jan 2006? Forget that Dems wanted McCain as their VP candidate in 2004?

How quickly the supposed Conservatives for McCain forget McCain’s political record. From Tax-cuts to the War to Judges McCain’s whole strategy has been to be as Liberal as possible and stay in the GOP.

Politically there is very little difference between Hillary and McCain. You get minor variations on this and that issue, like abortion, but over all McCain and Clinton share the same political philosophical outlook

McCain has done nothing for the Conservative movement in 8 years. While talking a good game on spending, he has done nothing. This is particularly galling considering all the issues CFR, Judges, Immigration Anti Torture Amendment-Gang of 14 etc etc etc issues which McCain was more then willing to throw his weight behind an issues to get legislation passed.

McCain has actively worked against the Conservatives on Social issues, on the WOT, on Iraq, on Gitmo, against Rummy, on Immigration and on Judges, on Global Warming etc etc etc etc etc. McCain has far more in common with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama then he does with any Conservative.

Funny how the Talking Heads miss this. Out of 49 Republican Senators McCain has been ranked 45th by the American Conservative Union for his voting record!

McCain would be the worse of both worlds. A mislabeled “Conservative” Administration actively advancing the Democrat Party’s agenda while knifing Conservatives in the back daily. You could even count on a McCain Administration appointing Leftist Judges in order to avoid fighting with the Democrats in the US Senate.

Tough on Foreign Policy? You think Mr “Close Gitmo and extend the same legal protections US Citizens have to the terrorists” McCain is going to have a “tough” foreign policy? The father of the Baker Commission and the plan to surrender Iraq to Iran and Syria is “strong on Foreign Policy”? Not based on his recored. The wrost thing that a McCain Administration would do is it would fracture the few remaining GOP Congress critters into pro and anti McCain factions. McCain would be the worst of all world politically for the Conservatives.

At least with a Democrat Leftist Administration, as opposed to a McCain Leftist with a GOP Label Administration, the Democrats would get all the political fall out of their disastrous political decisions and the GOP would unite in fighting them. The worst of all possible worlds for Conservatives in 2008 would be McCain getting elected President.
