Fred Thompson has surged EIGHT points in just two days, according to ARG, and is now within striking range of John McCain! In fact, among Republican voters, he is in a dead heat with McCain. However, according to the same poll, Mike Huckabee has surged TEN points in a single day, and now leads McCain by SEVEN points.
Candidate~~~poll of 1/16~~~1/18~~~Republicans of 1/18
Huckabee~~~23%~~~33%~~~37% Thompson~~~13%~~~21%~~~22% McCain~~~33%~~~26%~~~22% Romney~~~20%~~~9%~~~unreported Giuliani~~~4%~~~3%~~~unreported Paul~~~1%~~~2%~~~unreported Keyes~~~2%~~~1%~~~unreported Hunter~~~1%~~~1%~~~unreported
PEOPLE!!! If you have ever wondered whether pollsters flat-out lie, this should be proof. ARG's polls, (like Zogby, and sadly, the once gold-standard Gallup) have been complete nonsense all primary season long. This is nothing more than a desperate attempt to cover-up an unending barrage of obscene lies by last-minute changes, so ARG can claim that they were accurate in the future.
REMEMBER THESE LIES WHEN FLORIDA COMES!!!
Thompson is still a viable candidate!
Personally, I would as soon see him go back to Arizona. Maybe Cindy could use him to sell some more beer.
“Do you REALLY think Huck gained SEVENTEEN points relative to McCain in two days?”
33 - 23 = 10
That’s 10 points.
Just as believable as Fred climbing 8.
How is the headline about Fred ‘surging’ 8 points, when Huckster ‘surged’ 10?
“If Fred can finish in top 3 as long as it is within 8-10 points of winner, he is still viable. The MSM and especially MORNING JOE MORONS who proclaimed him dead this morning will have to eat their words.”
So 3rd place trailing by 10 points in South Carolina is viable???
If Fred can’t win SC, where can he win?
I think his campaign is dead. Too bad, since I wouldn’t be able to pull the trigger for any of the other front runners in the general.
I disagree. A Huck win in SC carries over to the rest of the south and he will have the momentum. McCain can’t carry the south. McCain winning and Fred in second would mean Fred has the momentum in the south.
If Fred had a nickel for everyone who predicts he’s dropping out, he’d have plenty of money to stay till the end.
I like your style.
There are many ways to avoid phone calls ... and my children know them all!
Many people have served well in the military. That does not make them great presidential material. One book on sociopaths states that they MAY come across as heroic and make good soldiers. No, I am NOT implying McCain is a sociopath. But the issue of his mental health has been raised.
Well said. This has happened many times before in races between the parties. I haven’t noticed it in primaries, probably because I was not looking. Usually, they say “the race is tightening up.” Early false reports guide some to vote for the winner and away from anyone who is not a contender. Business money, and political endorsements, flow more freely to the contenders, as there is little reason to befriend a loser. As a persistent reality sets in, the polls and press claim "a sudden shift in attitudes" as "late-breaking news." In general, polling organizations may be dishonest, but the press is often dishonest if politics and ideology are involved. Sometimes it’s the reporting on the polls that is manipulative and misleading.
All things considered, I think Thompson is the best candidate that the GOP can put forward at this time. The others have major weaknesses in their political track records, personal lives/beliefs, and previous administrative expirience.
This is not just a popularity contest. The Office of the POTUS, is not about state dinners, foreign visitors, throwing out the first pitch and every once in a while, giving a speech. It is the toughest, roughest, job in the world of being an executive. Tougher than heading Ford Co, tougher than running IBM, tougher than running a Tel Co, tougher than running them all put together.
It’s being responsible for solving/dealing with a constant 24/7 series of overlapping crises, that occur on a daily/hourly/weekly/mothly/second by second basis, and every decision can effect not only all 300 odd million Americans, but hundreds of millions of people in other nations as well.
There is no resting on ones laurels after getting elected...*that’s* when things start getting really rough, and *really* real.
It’s not a job for a pretty boy, or space cadet, or one who can’t be trusted to act in the countrys best interest instead of their own, or their partys. It cergaionly sho7uld never br given to a coward.
G-d bless you!
I agree. Holding my breath today and praying!
I think this due somewhat to the number of polls now being done. Decades ago, the polls were not reported as news. Now every news agency hires a couple of pollsters to get a feel for public sentiment on wide array of issues. More pollsters dilute the overall quality.
I think that the good polling groups have a handle on the concerns that you raised and have adopted their methodologies for the modern realities. What they have the most problem with is late-deciding voters. In this campaign season, where so many Republicans are unenthusiastic about the candidates, a lot of voters might not make up their minds until they pull the curtain closed.
Other than the NH Democrat primary, the polls have been pretty accurate overall. Of course, when the polls are wrong, it is a big news story. I think this tends to skew our perceptions about the polls' accuracy since we don't hear about the successes.
The key thing is THOMPSON NEEDS TO BEAT HUCKABEE.
Every Huckabee and McCain voter needs to be rmeinded that they are voting for pro-amnesty RINOs.
Then Thompson can lay claim to being the southern candidate and vie for those states.
Ad btw, the poll ... I hope its not false hope because ARG makes crappy polls.
Good for you! See, just talking to your Dad and getting him to read the truth is helping him make the right choice! I pray others in South Carolina have also taken the time to research and look at the candidate records. If they did, I know they will make the Fred Thompson choice! GO FRED!

(and it doesn’t even know the words)
Good for you!
I get to vote for him in the election.
Worth repeating, and I hope SC is Fred's for the taking. Prayers up for him.
