Fred Thompson, making what could be his last stand in South Carolina, has inched up to third in the latest tracking poll leading up to Saturday's first-in-the-South primary. Thompson has 14 percent in the Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released this morning, sliding ahead of Mitt Romney, who slipped to 12 percent, even though some of the polling was done after he won the Michigan primary on Tuesday. Romney is chasing delegates in Nevada, whose caucuses are also Saturday, after saying he believes John McCain has South Carolina locked up. McCain held his lead in the new poll, with 29 percent, compared to 22 percent for Mike Huckabee. Ron Paul and Rudy Giuliani were tied at 5 percent, according to the poll. A Clemson University poll also gave McCain a 29 percent-22 percent edge over Huckabee, who won the leadoff caucuses in Iowa but hasn't finished better than third since. Thompson, the former US senator from Tennessee, plans to air a 60-second ad during today's evening news across South Carolina in which he talks up his conservative credentials in a folksy way designed to appeal to Southern voters. "I've been a conservative all my life," he says, then citing his "100 percent pro-life" record and asserting that Americans' fundamental rights come "from God, not government." McCain, meanwhile, picked up the endorsement today of the Charleston Post and Courier, which also endorsed him in 2000, when he lost to now-President Bush. The newspaper's editorial board said McCain's record in the eight years since only reinforced its belief that the Arizona senator is the best suited for the presidency.

We all know Hunter is a fine man. But the rest of the country doesn't. This is his chance to use the national stage to show it.
That is how he wins.
“As much as I dislike both men and believe that neither deserves the nomination nor the Presidency....I DESPISE Juan McCain.”
I do not despise the man because of his service to our counrty, but I despise his politics since he is a liberal! The Huckabee supporters who are begging folks to vote for Huckabee so McCain won’t win are desperate. They know that McCain won’t win even though the MSM has McCain ahead in all their news polls. Remember the MSM wants McCain first or Huckabee second to be our nominee. They know Hillary can beat either one. So folks who really like Fred but think they should vote for Huckabee because they think it will keep McCain from winning are foolish. McCain is being proped up by the media. He did not win SC in the past, and won’t now. And who would want Huckabee since he is just a pro-life liberal? Fred is the only conservative! I have hope that the folks in South Carolina who like Fred will vote for Fred! GO FRED!
I clarified this somewhere. Hunter probably won’t get the Presidency in a brokered convention. What he WILL get is a lot of national exposure setting him to run for Senate or Gov. of California- quite possibly a VP slot.

I see ... national exposure is good.
Don’t get me wrong, he appears to be a good guy ... I really HATE seeing LIARS and FRAUDS like the Huckster taking up space for good guys.
I sincerely doubt that you have ever been accused of being a decent human being. If a comment on a forum, that is as close to factual truth as possible by all indications, a comment that was not aimed at you personally, causes you to post as you did then I say, God help us as a Nation.
>Hopefully Rudy, McCain and Romney split the Rino vote and Thompson wins big in Florida.
Now that would be perfect!
Fred was looking for ways to bring campaign financing back into the realm of the little guy, the individual supporter, who'd been ignored in the era of bundling and under the table foreign money. His motivation was no more nefarious than that. He realized that the individual voter was feeling totally cut off from the notion of any decision making by the candidate, in favor of the high rollers. Now one might say that campaigns have always been this way, but Fred was looking out over the political landscape and seeing that half the people in the country were so disaffected by politics that they didn't even bother to vote. He realized that this was NOT a good thing for the country, when the major decisions were being made by a minority of people. He was simply looking for ways to bring voters back to the polls, energized and ready to participate. I, for one, applaud his efforts. Granted, when the bill finally came out, there were things in it with which Fred did not agree, and he's stated that. I guess that's the way of the world in Congress.
Yep! I are one of them! Unfortunately, I missed a gathering this week in our town; a Presidential Straw Poll. I would have gone and voted for Fred, but I'm still recovering from a Christmas week stay in the hospital, so by the evenings, I'm pretty tired. I WILL, however, be at the polls will bells on for the Primary on Feb. 5th. I'll bring along our newest voter in the family; our youngest son turns 18 the day before the Primary, and we took him up to the Town Hall last week to get registered.
Their betrayal of the needs of the GOP will cost us the entire election if it turns out to be too late for Fred. They had better get on board quickly and encourage Fred to stay in this race or their will be no unified GOP going into the general and they could well be stuck with an albatross of a nominee that not only can’t win, but who will fracture us for years to come.

Does everyone in the Party know each other by their first names!
Congratulations on your son's first vote and having him vote GOP 'behind enemy lines'.
Despite WH pressure, and over the objections of McLame, the conservative justices were able to dismantle a key provision of this ludicrous law in FEC v. Wisconsin Right to Life last year.
Is there a quote from Thompson regarding this?
Oh -—I forgot——congrats on your son’s first time voting!
I am the messenger. You obviously consider the truth exposing evil AS the evil. That is a common mistake among ignorant people, and people who do not have an accurate world view of the total corrupt and depraved nature of man. Ad for Bush, NRTL, NRA etc.. they are all far left socialist statists who lie and push what little freedoms we have left, in the words of Judge Bork “Slouching towards Gomorrah.”
I want the conservatives to reject them all and nominate someone else at convention.
I skipped over the Presidency and voted “down ballot” for other offices. I never cast a vote FOR evil, no matter its claim to be lessor of evils.
If Fred had Mitts’ money, this race would have ended by now.
