Thompson Rises to Third in SC Poll
Boston.com ^ | 17 January, 2008 | Foon Rhee

Fred Thompson, making what could be his last stand in South Carolina, has inched up to third in the latest tracking poll leading up to Saturday's first-in-the-South primary. Thompson has 14 percent in the Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released this morning, sliding ahead of Mitt Romney, who slipped to 12 percent, even though some of the polling was done after he won the Michigan primary on Tuesday. Romney is chasing delegates in Nevada, whose caucuses are also Saturday, after saying he believes John McCain has South Carolina locked up. McCain held his lead in the new poll, with 29 percent, compared to 22 percent for Mike Huckabee. Ron Paul and Rudy Giuliani were tied at 5 percent, according to the poll. A Clemson University poll also gave McCain a 29 percent-22 percent edge over Huckabee, who won the leadoff caucuses in Iowa but hasn't finished better than third since. Thompson, the former US senator from Tennessee, plans to air a 60-second ad during today's evening news across South Carolina in which he talks up his conservative credentials in a folksy way designed to appeal to Southern voters. "I've been a conservative all my life," he says, then citing his "100 percent pro-life" record and asserting that Americans' fundamental rights come "from God, not government." McCain, meanwhile, picked up the endorsement today of the Charleston Post and Courier, which also endorsed him in 2000, when he lost to now-President Bush. The newspaper's editorial board said McCain's record in the eight years since only reinforced its belief that the Arizona senator is the best suited for the presidency.

Do NOT listen to idiots or take what they say and then post on it, or you will end up looking even dumber than they look.

You voted down ballot, so you voted straight party ticket? Or didn’t vote at all for a president?

FRed will place 4th in South Carolina.

That would be a tragedy for our nation. I sincerely hope that you head is right where I think it is.

As christian i have not a lot of respect for so-called “christians” who don’t behave as christians but in the same time use the name of Christ to bring their very questionable ideas.
Just follow your conscience

It is slowly dawning on many people that Fred is the one candidate that can resuscitate the Reagan coalition.
Krauthammer went from weeks of dissing Fred and calling his campaign “dead”, to acknowledging his rise in the polls and saying he was the one who could unite the GOP.
Ann Coulter of all people, who has repeatedly slammed Fred, finally admitted the true conservatives Hunter and Thompson, would be doing much better if the media hadn’t ignored them. Personally I think it’s rather sad that she basically is admitting she is now behind Romney because she thinks he has a better chance of winning, rather than because he’s the best choice. What does that say about conservatives when they give up when the race has barely started?
Why are we making decisions (and the media basing their coverage) on who wins 2 tiny states, only one of which was an actual primary?
“Conservative” TV pundits need to do a better job of delving into the candidates positions and the substance of what they are saying and the plans they espouse and provide some more educated commentary than babbling on about this poll or that poll. If they did it would take them so long to realize who is best for the GOP and the country.

Third aint good enough - he needs a torpedo to wake up all the folks who support Huckster cuz he says he is THE Evangelical hence the most Christianest candidate. A torpedo meaning something right on target for folks who do not read the news as much as we so - something to define Huck in a sentence or two.

It is raining over all of South Caroline now. When with the official thread start?

A large part of the state will get about 1” of snow this afternoon in a “wintery mix” forecast.

Wonder how that will affect turnout? I bet the casual supporters stay home and the passionate supporters turn out. That could bode well for Fred.

Who are you?
You have got to be one of the most negative people on here. Your constant belittling, snide remarks, sometimes outright falsehoods and now this just cement the fact that you truly have questionable motives regarding your purpose on this forum.
You’re right down there with the 9-11 truthers.
NRTL are actually pro-abortion anti-Christ?
You haven’t an ounce of credibility.
If I was going to point to someone as being guided by evil, it would be you.

Excuse me for being somewhat presumptuous, but I think you may already know.

The MSM, of which has many members of the CFR at the helm, have always been a strong force in making or breaking candidacies.

Rupert Murdoch-CFR
Dan Rather-CFR
Peter Jennings-CFR

Not. Even. Close.
No way Huck or McCain come out of a brokered convention.

Just curious ... with Hunter tanking or nonexistent ... Why wouldn’t McPain or Huck who HAVE ELECTORAL VOTES not be at the broker table. Hunter has NO ELECTORATE VOTES and often doesn’t show up in a poll beyond a SINGL DIGIT PERCENTAGE?

Maybe you don’t understand how it works when it’s brokered. The players WITH ELECTORAL VOTES work out a deal. How does this happen where those WITH ELECTORAL VOTES are SHUT OUT and HUNTER with NO ELECTORATE VOTES is at the table?

There’s a good article out there that calls Thompson the “anti-soundbite” candidate. It says that Thompson is probably the most thoughtful candidate we’ve had in many elections. The problem is that he treats voters as adults and refuses to talk in soundbites.

He does have a 'Lincolnesque' quality about him, as if he has actually thought about the issues.
